Southwood Elementary hosts fun-filled, hands-on career day
In early May, Southwood Elementary students participated in a fun-filled career day full of guest speakers, presentations, activities, games, and – goats!
Students learned about and explored different professions and career pathways, and even have some hands-on experiences. Visitors included entrepreneurs, a barber, artist, graphic designer, nurse, Herndon Career Center students from the construction program, Lakeside Nature Parks and Recreation, Raytown Public Works, DJ Playmaker from Hot 103 Jamz, Powell Gardens, Raytown Fire Department, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, and so many more. They even had a special visitor from the ‘crazy goat lady,’ who shared her love of goats with the students.
Robinson Elementary P.E. class welcome surprise guest visitors
Third, fourth, and fifth-grade students at Robinson Elementary had quite the surprise in one of their last physical education classes of the year. Baseball players from Dallas Christian College, Oakland City University, and Mid-America Christian University, visited the students and taught them the fundamentals of baseball. The college students were in Kansas City to participate in the National Christian College Athletic Association baseball world series. This surprise visit was made possible through the Crown Schools Program.

Two RQS middle schoolers make history – in Washington, D.C.!
Two district student delegates traveled to Washington, D.C. for the first time in district history to participate in the Ford's Theatre National Oratory Fellowship program. Raytown Middle School eighth-grade student Lavoid T., and Raytown Central Middle School seventh-grade student Tere'ion K., memorized and performed a contemporary speech, not once, but twice!
The first performance was on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the very spot where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and the second performance was on stage at Ford's Theater. Lavoid performed a cut of Denzel Washington's Commencement Speech at the University of Pennsylvania, and Tere'ion performed "How Dare You" by Greta Thunberg. They were two of ten students from across the nation to participate in this program. Congratulations, students!
