Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
Recycling beyond bottles and cans! While at SBHS this week, I got to see the incredible recycled art displayed in the lobby. Using recycled elements like a size 8 shoe, bottle caps, computer parts, fan parts, straws and so much more, students have created two very impressive pieces. Thank you to Principal Burke for posing with me. Stop by and see it if you are the high school!
Around the District
The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. I had the pleasure of attending a packed training in Waterbury yesterday with Senior Director of Operations and Finance Tim Jarvis and teachers and principals from across our schools. Would you believe that the event was so well attended that they ran out of tables and Tim and I tucked ourselves by the coffee station and John Craig by the pastries?! Yes, there was such a high attendance among Vermont educators that the house was literally packed! Go VTEd! The training focused on Developing Emergency Operations Plans for K-12 and was facilitated by Readiness in Emergency Management for Schools. Thanks to our exceptional team for attending.
April is Autism Acceptance Month! Our schools across the district are celebrating autistic brains and neurodiversity. Keep an eye out for how schools are celebrating neurodiverse brains throughout the month.
SBHS Unified Basketball season started this week! The team is made up of neurodiverse and neurotypical students with the goals to redefine skills, create friendships and develop independence. They’ve played two games and their record is now 1-1! Come out and support them! The full schedule of their games is available here.
Gertrude Chamberlin students had Autism Acceptance Spirit Week this week and the SBHS will have their own spirit week April 17-21. Each day celebrates how differently everyone’s mind works. Events included Magnificent Mind Monday and What’s Your Passion Wednesday. Tomorrow at GCS is Sensory Friendly Friday where students are encouraged to dress in their favorite comfy clothes to acknowledge the sensory sensitivities many neurodiverse people experience.
With support from the social studies department at Tuttle, student council and student government have been reinstated! Students interested in running needed 15 signatures to get on the ballot. Then the campaign began. Posters were created and candidates gave a speech. Elections were held last week, and the winners were announced on Monday. The new Student Council will start meeting weekly to discuss the issues that are important to the students. Congratulations to the newly elected council!
Last weekend, SBHS 10th grader Auishma Pradhan ran an incredible workshop titled, "Intergenerational Trauma and Supporting Healing in Schools and Communities" alongside two students from Winooski. The workshop was given at the Reimagining Schools Connecting Communities conference hosted by the Education Justice Coalition of Vermont and was attended by hundreds of students, educators, administrators, and community members from across the state. I heard that participants had only glowing praise for Auishma's presentation, both the content and facilitation of the session. Congratulations Auishma!
Members of the SBHS Baseball team hosted a clinic for a group of Little Leaguers. Thank you to these players and Coach Goyette for taking the time to show these potential future members of the SBHS team how to hone their skills.
The SB Drama department presents senior-directed one-act plays! They are taking place on April 7 and 8th at 7pm and admission is by donation. Come support the theater!
The memorial bench dedication for Karsten Schlenter, principal at FHTMS from 2011-2021, will be on Monday, May 1st at 4 pm at the middle school. Everyone is invited to attend.

For families new to School’s Out, registration will open on April 10th and run through May 5th. At that time, there will be a lottery (if necessary) to fill the openings at each school. You will then be notified of the status by May 15th. (New families include those on the 2022-2023 waitlist.)
For School Out’s Summer Camp, registration is open now for all SBSD and non-SBSD families. Use this form to register and please complete all sections. Many weeks already have waitlists, so please take note as you register.
Child Care and Educator Support Bill (S.56)
A few weeks ago, I included information about contacting VT legislators, who are currently discussing important support for child care and educator compensation, by following this link to have a prefilled letter sent to lawmakers advocating to help Vermont families, educators, and communities. The bill recently passed the state senate and is currently in committee at the House. On April 12 at 1 pm, there is a rally for a childcare solution taking place in Montpelier. As lawmakers work on this bill, this is an opportunity to show support for long-term investment in the state’s childcare system.
