Celebrating Black History Month
For this first week of Black History Month, we’re starting off by sharing the origins of this annual celebration of achievements by African Americans with recognition and honor of their central role in U.S. history. Read about this year’s theme, Black Health and Wellness.
Stay tuned throughout February as we highlight more about Black History Month. Pictured here is an example of how schools are celebrating the month. Today, Bright Star Theatre performed “The Black History Hall of Fame” at Victor Falls Elementary.
February is CTE Month
This month, we are celebrating CTE Month! Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for high-wage, high-demand careers covering fields like health care, information technology, and advanced manufacturing. CTE helps our students find their passion and guides their course selections so they are career and life ready. Throughout the month, we will be highlighting what CTE looks like throughout our District in middle and high school. Learn more about the District's CTE program: www.sumnersd.org/cte.
Expanding volunteer opportunities
We are thankful for our volunteers, who are critical to student success. So far this year, in order to promote safety and meet COVID-19 safety guidelines, we’ve allowed only those volunteers who support essential after-school programs and services that can’t be performed without volunteer support. With current safety guidelines, and current capacity to approve volunteers, we’re expanding volunteer access beginning Feb. 1, recognizing the benefit of volunteer-based school-day programs.
On a limited basis and with principal approval, we’re accepting applications for volunteers to support these specific programs during the school day (vary by school):
- WATCH D.O.G.S. or similar program
- Art docent
- Assembly support
Per the governor’s proclamation, volunteers in our schools must follow all applicable COVID-19 safety guidelines and be vaccinated or receive medical or religious accommodation through the District’s Human Resources Department. If you’re interested in volunteering for one of the programs listed above, please contact your child’s school.
