I am so thankful to Mrs. Dahl for her preparation and planning for Northwood’s First Veterans Day performance. The third graders worked hard learning the songs and rehearsing for the performances. They have worked diligently over the last month to prepare a celebration of our nation's veterans with voices, instruments, and dance. As the daughter and granddaughter of a marine and naval aviator, I appreciate the opportunity to honor those that have served and continue to serve our country. We were all excited to be able to honor our community's veterans together. The performance may have brought back memories for our adults, and we hope that it gave our children a sense of importance of our veterans in our country's history.

We look forward to the Thanksgiving feasts next week! If you haven’t already sent in your RSVP, please do so right away so the cafeteria is able to prepare. The RSVP form is linked at the bottom of this newsletter.

The Kindergarteners took a fun field trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens this week. We loved touring the gardens and seeing all of the various plants and flowers throughout the gardens. At the end of the trip we had a picnic lunch together outside. It was a great trip. Thank you to the Fulton County Schools Teaching Museum for this hands on learning opportunity. Everyone learned so much and enjoyed a day together in the gardens.

First Grade has had a busy few weeks. We enjoyed having Principal Rucker come read to our class for a read aloud. We also had so much fun going on our treasure hunt! We have been working so hard to understand maps and keys and were able to use all the knowledge we have learned to find our treasure on the playground!

For our October PBIS celebration, students who earned three gold slips got some free time to do directed drawing! This is always a crowd favorite (especially when the weather is too cold to go outside). This gives students a chance to show off their artistic abilities. Hopefully they brought home their masterpieces to show you all! Students earned this reward by earning at least 3 gold slips in the month of October. Students earn gold slips for being respectful, responsible, and engaged. In addition to this fun reward, students also had a chance to go shopping on the PBIS reward card for prizes. Ask your student how many gold slips they earned in October!

Awards are one of the many wonderful ways we have to recognize and celebrate our Explorers at Northwood Here is a link to this month's award recipients. Congratulations!

Fall Picture Retake Day is November 13th. If you are not happy with your Explorer's portraits simply have your student return their original picture package to the photographer on retake day and they will replace the set at no additional cost.

The Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE) requires all public schools to participate in their Georgia Student Health Survey. To see the GA DOE informational website click here. The survey has two parts: one for parents and one for students in grades 3 -12. Each school must have a 75% participation rate on the student portion of the survey. Schools failing to meet the 75% student participation rate will score 0.00 points on the school's CCRPI survey calculation under the survey portion of the School Climate Star Rating.

Parent survey: Your opinion matters! Tell us about your experiences with the district and your school by filling out the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) Georgia Parent Survey required by the Georgia Department of Education. This survey provides a foundation for your school’s Climate Star rating score and is part of the CCRPI. These climate scores are an important indicator of culture and climate within each school in the district. Each school will receive a 1-5 star rating, with five stars representing an excellent school climate, and one star representing a school climate most in need of improvement. The surveys are anonymous and confidential and will remain open through Friday, December 15. To access the CCRPI survey, click here.

All students will participate in this survey starting the week of November 13th.

This GA DOE developed survey asks questions that are covered by the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA). For more information about PPRA, click here. PPRA requires that schools provide parents/guardians with advanced notice of student participation, the option to preview the student survey, and the ability for parents/guardians to opt their students out of any surveys that include PPRA protected areas. If you would like to opt your student out of participation in this survey, please email Heather Rucker {ruckerh@fultonschools.org}requesting that your student not participate in Georgia Health Survey prior to 7:00 am on November 13th].

The Infinite Campus Parent Portal provides quick and easy access to information for all enrolled students in their household. Find grades, attendance, assignments, schedules, ID numbers, school announcements and more. If you haven't already joined, please do so today as Fulton County Schools is transitioning to managing everything via the portal.

Parents, please encourage your students to check regularly for lost items in the Lost and Found. Please mark all student belongings clearly with the child’s name so that it can be identified. Unclaimed items are donated to local charities after the last school day of every month. November’s date is Thursday, November 30th.

Reflections is a program that provides an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works once provided with a custom theme. This year's theme is "I am hopeful because." The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for students, parents, schools and communities is unmatched with the majority of Georgia PTAs participating in the program at all PTA levels.

That’s why the Reflections Program provides an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to:

• Unleash their creative talents and be inspired
• Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
• Experience the joy and fun of making art
• Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
• Receive positive recognition for their original works of art

Music Night is right around the corner! Music night is a fun, food, and music-filled night for 4th and 5th grade students. Attendance is free for those not having dinner there, or purchase a $10 meal deal packet and leave the rest to us!
