Step- Up to Writing:
Students identify the elements of an informative/explanatory paragraph and learn to associate each with a Traffic Light color.
Green means go. It is used for a topic sentence that tells what the writing is going to explain.
Yellow means slow down to introduce a key/star idea (big idea).
Red means stop to explain more about the key/star idea.
Green for the conclusion means go back and remind readers of the topic.
1st Grade:
1st Graders will be engaging in a variety of experiences as they answer this unit's guiding question, “How do birds use their body parts to survive?” Throughout the unit, students read, write, talk, draw, experiment, and sing about two key bird body parts: feathers and beaks. In labs we will be building and sculpting to explore the properties of these different body parts and how they help birds survive. In the picture below, students were challenged to build a structure with hollow cardboard tubes and a plate that can hold the most counters. They discussed and drew up a design plan as a group then started building. Some groups ended up with hundreds of counters on their little plates! We then decided to count them by making groups of 10's and 100's.
2nd Grade:
Second grade is learning all about pollinators and pollination. They are using initiative and collaboration throughout their work. In math students are working on adding and subtracting within 1,000 as well as telling time, counting money, and adding and subtracting up to four numbers.
3rd Grade:
Third graders are finalizing our Frog Books this week for presentations! We are ready to celebrate! They have also spent time at the pond to test frog adaptations and conduct research of frog habitats!
4th Grade:
In their EL Module 4th graders are learning about the American Revolution and focusing on multiple perspectives of various populations during that time period. We are becoming geologists and have begun collecting rock and mineral specimens on our hikes. We will be learning how our earth changes over time. In social studies we are also studying about different populations that contributed to the growth of Idaho including many entrepreneurs. We will continue focusing on entrepreneurship this month and create our own taco trucks! This project will utilize math skills we will be accumulating including the use of decimals, area, and perimeter.
5th Grade:
In fifth grade, the students will be busy learning about ecosystems. We will focus on the important role decomposers play in the ecosystem. Students will continue to design and conduct experiments with worms. We will also look for other types of decomposers on our nature hikes.
6th Grade
ELA:
Students will continue reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond and focusing on grammar and literary elements. Students will also write an expository essay pertaining to the time period in which the novel is set (17th century).
Mrs. Lawson's 6th Grade Math:
Sixth graders are finishing their fractions project book and coordinate pair art. Now it’s time to delve into algebra and statistics!
Mrs. Hardcastle's Math: In April, students will compute sums, differences, products, and quotients of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals using the efficient algorithms. They will use the calculations with whole numbers and decimals to solve problems set in real-world contexts.
Science: Students will begin their study on kinetic, potential, and thermal energies. They will also discover how energy transfers and its effect on temperature.
Middle School Social Studies:
Students will wrap up their study of colonial times by presenting the colonies that they personally created, as well as participating in the Colonial Games (an opportunity for kids to compete against other student-led colonies, while experiencing and developing skills necessary for a 17th century colonist). We will then move into looking at the events that led to the Revolutionary War.
7th/8th Grade:
7th grade math, students are working on Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities. In this unit, students solve equations of the forms px + q = r and p(x + q) = r where p, q, and r are rational numbers.
Lawson 7th Grade Math:
7th graders are entering the world of algebra and algebraic thinking! They are examining the relationship between equations, graphs, and real life applications.
8th grade math, students will begin their unit on Linear Equations and Linear Systems. In this unit, students write and solve linear equations in one variable. These include equations in which the variable occurs on both sides of the equal sign, and equations with no solutions, exactly one solution, and infinitely many solutions.
Science, students will begin exploring how short and long-term environmental changes affect organisms and traits in subsequent populations.
