At the February 23 regular board meeting:

Budget Report – Business Services Director Jasen McEathron was not available to present his monthly budget report at this board meeting, however, Superintendent Snell was able to take up the charge. In a nutshell, costs and revenues are on track, enrollment increased slightly in January at the elementary level, and the fieldwork for our annual State audit is complete. We anticipate a clean audit report in March!

Congratulations to Karen Lipkin who was nominated by her Liberty Middle School co-workers (teachers Ashley Shold and Sarah Kankelberg) for the ESD Classified School Employee of the Year. This is just a small excerpt of what they had to say about Karen:

"Karen consistently checks in with teachers at the beginning and end of each class period to ensure teachers are aware of student progress and needs they may have about the current work. She is insightful on accommodations that will be effective for each individual student. Karen does this on her own time and because she genuinely cares about the success of each student. While she holds students to high academic expectations, she balances this with the pressures students experience outside of school."

Twenty Camas students from Prune Hill Elementary School, Liberty Middle School, and Skyridge Middle School participated in the Washington Music Educators’ Association 2020 Junior All-State Youth Choir in Yakima, WA, on February 16.

The choir consisted of approximately 150 students from around the state. Students had to work hard to audition in October and then memorize seven pieces of music in January before attending the all-day event. The day in Yakima consisted of around six hours of rehearsals before performing in front of several thousand people at the historic Capitol Theater. It’s a huge honor to be selected and it’s an experience the students will never forget.

Last week, the CHS Girls Gymnastics team made Papermaker history earning their third state title in a row! Read all about it at The Columbian. Nice work, team!

The Green Team at Lacamas Lake Elementary has different "branches," each focused on a different area of sustainability. The branch focused on energy conservation teamed up with teachers, their principal, kitchen manager, custodian (who is their Green Team leader) and Clark Public Utilities to make a video for staff about energy conservation at school. Check it out for some great tips and information you can use at school and at home!

Did you know? Lacamas Lake Elementary's Nancy Stoy has been nominated for a Green Apple Award from Clark County Green Schools. Camas High School’s Ali Coker is a past recipient.

Over two days, Liberty Middle School’s entire 8th grade visited the state capitol. On the trip, students were guided on a tour that touched each branch of the government, visiting both the Senate and House chambers while they were voting on bills. They participated in a quick mock trial in the state Supreme Court and visited the governor’s office, where the group was lucky enough to run into Governor Jay Inslee himself.

After the capitol tour, they took in several memorials around campus — including a plaque that Camas students placed at the base of the Moon Tree years ago. At that time, Camas students sold Moon Pies at lunch to other students, raising the money to buy the plaque, rock base (composed of Camas Greywacke basalt quarried from 192nd), transportation, and placement. What an adventure!

Odyssey Middle School students presented a project proposal to the Camas City Council last week seeking partnership and approval to paint stormwater murals on catch basins located in downtown Camas. This project will help educate the public about stormwater, promote stewardship, and meet the City’s Stormwater NPDES permit requirements.

The students created the designs and collaborated with a local artist who will paint the catch basins. The students presented their designs to the Council during their regular workshop and received approval to move forward. Nice work, Gryphons!
