Knowing God and Asking Questions
God is the author of knowledge. Everything we know to be true about the world is because of God. The more we know about God, the better equipped we are to live each day with the armor of God wrapped around us to defeat the enemy and stand in faith.
Being able to know EVERYTHING about God is not possible for our human brains. And while we may never know all there is to know about God, God gives us lots of ways we can know Him. We can know Him best through Jesus, who showed us how much God loves us. We can pursue knowing more about God through Jesus, who showed why knowledge is so important. Reading our Bibles regularly is another great way to get to know God. (If you didn't hear Pierce's sermon on Dec. 29 that included research about being in the word, be sure to listen!)
We also get to know God by asking questions. The last wee of January, your kids will be encouraged to ask about what they don't understand about God. It's ok as parents if we don't have the answers! We can learn together with our kids by showing them that we are still learning about God too! We are Providence are here to help answer questions. Sometimes we may not have the answers either . . . but together as a community of faith we will grow and learn more about God together.
Try This . . .
In the Morning . . .
On the Move...
Time to take your Bible (or other suggested books) for a drive! Each week as you are riding in the car together, reread or retell the story about Jesus that your child learned from the week (see Look it Up! or Literature Connection below in the newsletter). Talk about questions that your child or you may have about the story and discuss what you know about God that might answer these questions.
For example: Jesus feeds the 5000. Question: When someone took a fish, did another fish appear as they passed the basket? How did the fish and bread get there for the next person?
Possible Learning Response: Well, I don't know how they got there but what I do know is that with God ANYTHING is possible. Jesus taught us that in the Bible (Matthew 19:26 and if you don't have a scripture reference ... use a bible reference app like bible gateway to find it!)
In Prayer...
Sometimes kids can feel intimidated about praying to God because they aren't sure what to say. Here is a quick Acrostic that might help them get started with talking to God on their own when they don't know what to say.
P - Praise. Thank God for who he is! Be specific about what you may know about God.
R - Repent. Tell God you are sorry for something or not always doing the right choice.
A - Ask. Ask God questions and that he will guide you with the answer. Ask for help for others.
Y - Yield. Sit quietly trying to be in the moment and not think about anything but sitting with God.
