Assembly Lines
Students participate in a variety of simulations during eighth-grade social studies. Simulations are used to help students experience and gain a better understanding of a specific time period or event. During a simulation used by Social Studies Teachers Alissa Lyman and Amy Stenberg, students were told to “stop talking,” “work harder,” and many were written up for violating the Ford Motor Company laws as they pretended to work the assembly line putting together Model T cars from the early 1900s.
Labor supervisors (aka students) walked around the “plant” to increase productivity after they received a memo that the company wasn’t maximizing its profits. Factory workers were earning $5 a day. Workers (eighth-graders) were dismissed if they:
Left their workstation.
Took bathroom or lunch breaks.
Arrived late for their shift.
Produced poor quality goods.
Talked, sang, smiled, or sat down.
Students later reflected on serving on an assembly line:
“The rules make the job really boring and tiring.”
“Not being allowed to show emotions would never be accepted in today’s work environment.”
“Most jobs today require employees to talk to accomplish their tasks.”
“No lunch breaks? That was just cruel.”
Please visit the school's Google Doc folder for pictures of the activity.
Holiday Card Writing Campaign
DW’s Free to Be, a club for LGBTQAI+ and straight allies to promote respect and inclusion within our school community, is participating in a holiday card writing campaign.
There is a list of LGBTQ folks who would like to receive holiday cards, where there is no in-home support. If you are interested in participating in this card writing project, Free to Be will collect cards (bought or homemade) and include them with the club’s cards.
Instructions:
1. Choose cards from anywhere that you like, or make your own on paper. Please refrain from using religious type cards.
2. Write your card with a greeting of your choice. Some ideas are:
"Dear lovely human,"
"Dear human deserving of love,"
"Dear LGBTQ friend,"
3. Make your cards as simple or as elaborate as you like. You can simply wish a happy holiday season, or share details of why the LGBTQ community holds a space in your heart.
4. Do not affix any postage to the card, Free to Be we will take care of this expense for you. Simply leave the cards in an envelope unsealed and ask the school office to place them in Lisa Cole's mailbox by Wednesday, Dec. 14. The club will deliver them to BG Pride, which will then distribute them.
Tournament Champs
The Daniel Wright Science Olympiad team took home the first place trophy at the Boyceville, Wis., tournament last weekend. Thirty-one teams representing 14 schools competed. Individual team medals earned were 34 first-place, seven second-place, one third-place, and two fourth-place. The DW team consists of 30 students in grade 6 to 8. The team is coached by Eric Rexer and Lisa Solesky with the assistance of dedicated volunteer parents. Enjoy some of the pictures from the competition in the school's Google folder.
Crossing Guard Reminder
The season has ended for crossing guard assistance in District 103. Students who walk or bike to school should take extra precautions between now and spring break 2023. There will be no crossing guards assisting students to and from Sprague School behind the playground at the intersection of Riverwoods Road and Yorkshire Drive or in front of Daniel Wright Junior High School.
Get Involved & Make a Difference!
The Wright Way Club (WWC) invites families to "help make a difference" by purchasing a toy for an economically disadvantaged child. WWC is collecting new, unwrapped toys through Thursday, Dec. 15. Please drop the toys off in the Toys for Tots box outside the school office or cafeteria Monday, Dec. 12, through Thursday, Dec. 15.
WWC, a school peer leadership program, believes everyone can contribute and make a difference to our school climate. WWC invites families to participate in the Marine Toys for Tots fundraiser, which assists the U.S. Marine Corps in bringing the joy of the holidays and sending a message of hope to America's less fortunate children.
Absence Reminder
If your child will be absent or tardy, please contact your child's attendance office by the following time so that you will NOT receive an automated message of your child’s absence on that day.
