Books of the Month
In recognition of Black History Month, I have selected the following books as my books of the month for February:
- Ice Cream Man by Glenda Armand and Kim Freeman
On the Line: My Story of Becoming the First African American Rockette by Jennifer Jones and Lissette Norman
Thurgood by Jonah Winter
I will be sharing Ice Cream Man as a read aloud text with each homeroom in Grades K-1; On the Line: My Story of Becoming the First African American Rockette with each homeroom in Grades 2-3; while Thurgood will be shared with each homeroom in Grades 4-5.
The following summary of Ice Cream Man comes from the Penguin Random House website (Click here to access link).
"Augustus Jackson was born in 1808 in Philadelphia. While most African Americans were enslaved at that time, in Pennsylvania, slavery was against the law. But while Augustus and his family were free, they were poor, and they depended on their garden and their chickens for food. Augustus enjoyed helping his mom prepare meals for their family. He dreamed of becoming a professional cook, and when his mom suggested he may be able to make meals for the president one day, Augustus didn’t waste any time in making that dream a reality. In 1820, when he was only twelve years old, he set off for Washington, DC. He applied to work in the White House, where the head cook offered him a job as a kitchen helper. After five years of working hard, Augustus, or Gus, was promoted to cook. He went on to serve presidents James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. During his time at the White House, Augustus became an expert at making a popular egg-based dessert. He soon made an eggless version—known to us today as ice cream—and left the White House determined to make and sell the frozen treat to everyone, not just the wealthy. Gus headed back home to Philadelphia, and in 1830, he opened his very own ice cream parlor. He devised a way to keep the ice cream frozen so that it could be shipped and sold to other businesses. Gus also began adding rock salt to the ice that he used to make his ice cream, which made the mixture freeze more quickly. This allowed him to speed up his production process. He created more ice cream with new flavors, and soon he was shipping product via train to places like New York City, which was 100 miles away. Gus’s dream had come true, and better yet, he had brought smiles to many faces. Shining a light on a little-known visionary, this inspiring picture-book biography includes an afterword, a list of sources, and an easy-to-follow recipe so readers can make their own delicious ice cream!"
A summary of On the Line: My Story of Becoming the First African American Rockette listed below comes from the Harper Stacks website (Click here to access link).
- "From the first Black Radio City Rockette dancer, Jennifer Jones, comes an inspiring picture book autobiography perfect for fans of trailblazers like Misty Copeland, Mae Jemison, and more. Dancing has always made her feel free, like she can do anything. But when Jennifer was a child, some people didn’t think that she had a future as a dancer because of the color of her skin."
While the following summary of Thurgood comes from the Penguin Random House website (Click here to access link).
- "Thurgood Marshall was a born lawyer–the loudest talker, funniest joke teller, and best arguer from the time he was a kid growing up in Baltimore in the early 1900s. He would go on to become the star of his high school and college debate teams, a stellar law student at Howard University, and, as a lawyer, a one-man weapon against the discriminatory laws against black Americans. After only two years at the NAACP, he was their top lawyer and had earned himself the nickname Mr. Civil Rights. He argued–and won–cases before the Supreme Court, including one of the most important cases in American history: Brown v Board of Education. And he became the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice in history. Like its subject, here is a biography that crackles with energy and intensity–a great introduction to a great man."
Let me know if you have any questions.

Important Information
Mobile Phones and Smart Watches at Lincoln
We are seeing more students texting or calling their families during the school day using personal phones in the recent weeks. In some cases this has led families to come to Lincoln to pick up their child from the health office and school staff have no knowledge as to why the family has come to the school. Please review the following reminders about the use of smart watches and mobile phones by students during the school day with your student(s).
- Students are expected to keep mobile phones stored in their lockers
- Mobile phones should be in silent or airplane mode when stored away
- Students may take their mobile phones with them if heading home or to shops (Grades 4-5 only) for lunch
- Video and audio recording of other students and staff members with personal mobile phones/devices and smart watches is prohibited
- Students should keep smart watches in silent or airplane mode once inside the school
- Students are not permitted to call home (or to others) using personal mobile phones or smart watches
- If students need to speak with a parent or family member, they need to seek staff approval to use one of the many phones we have located throughout the school
- Students that are ill or not feeling must be seen in health office and are not to call home using a mobile phone or smart watch - the health office staff will make ALL phone calls home when students are ill
- Family members should not call or text students during the school day - if a student's smart watch alerts the student of an incoming notification during class time, it distracts everyone that hears the device
I am asking for your support and cooperation. If your child needs to connect with you, we will make sure that happens but it needs to occur under the supervision of a school staff member.
Respectfully,
Dr. Ron Kitsko

Recess Temperature Reminder
As we have entered the season unpredictable and colder weather, I want to remind our students about what they should to wear during outdoor recess.
- Anytime the temperature dips below 50ºF, students should wear a jacket (of some type) outside.
- While it is a family decision as to what each student wears to school each day, I would suggest that students not wear shorts on days when temperatures are forecasted to be below 50ºF.
- Having an extra pair of pants available (left in a student’s locker) is a great way to avoid emotional situations if students wear shorts to school on cold weather days.
- When the thermometer dips even lower, students must be prepared to wear jackets, hats and gloves during outside recess.
- We will go outside if the “feels like” temperature is at or above 15 ºF.
- Students may be permitted on the field even if snow is present. However, snow-style boots are a must for this.
We typically check AccuWeather and The Weather Channel apps for the current local temperature at approximately 11:55 am daily.

Counselor's Corner by Ms. Herb
A Note From The Elementary School Counselors…
Dear Families,
This month, we recognize National School Counseling Week (2/5-2/9) and this year’s theme is "School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused." We are excited to be working with the students on their career portfolios, teaching students positive coping skills, while also helping them with developing a growth mindset to achieve their best. We remind students daily that kindness and bucket filling not only help others to feel good, but it can help us to feel good as well. We invite you to read more here about the role of school counselors. We also take the opportunity to highlight the kind words and acts of so many as we recognize Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week (2/14-2/20) and RAK Day on February 17th. Thank you for all that you continue to do to support our home-school partnership.
