ESSAY CONTEST - The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and Math for America (MfA)
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and Math for America (MfA) cosponsor an essay contest each year for students in three grade categories: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and Undergraduate. It's open to any student in these categories: there are no restrictions based on gender, nationality, or anything else.
To enter, students interview a woman in a mathematical career about her life and work, and then they write and submit a biographical essay of about 500-1000 words based on their interview. If a student wants help finding a woman to interview, they can ask us -- we have a matching service that connects students with women mathematicians!
Important dates:
- December 1, 2022: Contest opens for submissions
- January 10, 2023: Last day for students to request a match with an interviewee
- February 1, 2023: Entry deadline

AZ FAFSA Challenge
Since the 2023-2024 FAFSA debuted on October 1st, Arizona has seen an increase in FAFSA completions across the state. According to the National College Attainment Network, as of November 11th, 2022, Arizona has reached a 15% FAFSA completion rate, which is a little over 14,000 high school seniors that have completed the application. This is an increase of an additional 392 completed FAFSA's compared to last year. The momentum is encouraging; however, it is crucial that as a state, we continue to support these efforts to ensure Arizona high school seniors are not missing out on funding to pay for their post-secondary education.

Are you looking for professional development to empower economic thinkers?
Econiful's mission is to strengthen economic education at the secondary level so that all students are able to apply economic principles in their personal, professional, and civic lives.
Econiful traces its roots back to 1972 when Thomas R. Brown, CEO of Burr-Brown Corporation, met University of Arizona economist Gerald Swanson. Their friendship and shared appreciation for the power of economic principles led to the creation of the Thomas R. Brown Foundation (TRBF) “to advance the use of economic principles in public and private decision making through strategic partnerships and educational programs.” From 2005 to 2022, TRBF funded over 700 professional development workshops for K-12 educators, mostly in Southern Arizona.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, TRBF began offering virtual and on-demand workshops to an increasingly geographically diverse audience of educators. In the latter half of 2022, TRBF adopted the trade name Econiful for its efforts to support middle and high school teachers around the country with professional development programs and, eventually, a full economics curriculum.
