A Letter from the President
Hello quilt sisters,
I am hoping everyone is fairing the quarantine well. I am only working 4 hours a week and I am making masks. Please reach out to our fellow guild members if you know someone who cannot get out for what they need. Contact a board member and we will try to help. I know some are not near family and may not have help.
Also we need to get our entries submitted to the quilt show. The link will be in either an email or in the newsletter.
This has been a time of introspection and realizing how blessed I am. I know everyone has issues but mine can be managed. I have food, clothing, a roof over my head and a sewing machine.
Let us pray our nation will weather the trying times we are experiencing and come through the storm stronger. I think it will take a while but we have always had a Can do attitude and strong work ethic. Hopefully we will roll up our sleeves and go to work.
Hoping this missive finds everyone well. I am truly missing having our meetings and depending on the governor we may not be able to have a May meeting. Will let everyone learn know at the end of the month.
Your President
Karen Rhyneer

Quilts of Valor
Due to the COVID-19 Stay at home still in effect, Check for more information in our May Newsletter
Exciting news. We’ve completed our first top and showed it off at the February meeting. We have another top in progress and even better, we have enough blocks for two more tops. My heart is so full and I appreciate all the help the membership has provided so far.
It’s time for next steps. We need help putting together our tops and getting the tops we have...quilted. If you’d like to help, please let me know.
Also let’s change up our blocks. Let’s see your best rail fence blocks (12 1/2 inches). 9 patches are still great, if they’re more your style.
Can’t wait to see what you create!

North Texas Quilt Festival 2020
North Texas Quilt Festival 2020
2020 Theme: Sing Your Song in Fabric
Quilt Show Update:
We need YOU to make this year's Quilt Festival Great!
I hope that between making masks you have been able to work on your North Texas Quilt Festival entries, miniatures and guild booth items. We are keeping our hopes up that we are able to move through the current crisis in time to have a wonderful Quilt Show on August 13-15 at the Irving Convention Center!
- Please submit a quilt (or two, or three!) to display in the Festival. We have such talent in our Guild, and we want to see it exhibited. There is a theme category for the 2020 NTQF: Sing Your Song in Fabric! So get your imagination going and join the fun of making a theme quilt to enter. Please keep in mind that quilts must be no more than 96″ on any side and must have a four-inch sleeve attached. The entry fee is again $25 per entry. We can help get your entry to and from the Convention Center if needed.
- We also need miniatures for the silent auction at the Festival. The proceeds will benefit our guild. There is no entry fee for miniatures.
- Begin making items for sale in the Guild’s booth: zipper bags, tote bags, pin cushions, holiday items, baby items or anything else a quilter would love.
- NTQF T-shirts are now available for order from Judy Faulkner or Linda Witt. If pre-ordered, the price is $15. The price at the Quilt Festival will be $20
- For questions regarding the show:

- Facebook: North Texas Quilt Festival

RAFFLE QUILT
Please pick up your raffle quilt tickets at the back of the room if you have not done so. Every member is asked to sell 24 tickets, or $20 worth. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The raffle quilt will be given to some lucky soul at the November 2020 meeting. You may return ticket stubs and pick up additional tickets from Pat Wagers or Grace Stroud. Please come take a close look at our raffle quilt. Melissa Picha, from the Compass Centre, helped choose the beautiful colors. Chris Tomich did all the piecing, and Lynda McGee did the quilting which shows up beautifully because she used wool batting. It is a beautiful creation aptly named “Island Breezes”.
All the money collected from the sale of raffle tickets goes to pay for speakers and workshops.
See Pat Wagers or Grace Stroud for additional information.
RETREAT 2020 Assumed Cancelled
There are still openings for the FWQG retreat at the Compass Centre, April 16-19. Cost for three nights is $295; two nights is $196. You can pay on the installment plan and scholarships are also available. The deadline for applying for scholarships is January 21; email gstroud49@gmail.com for an application form. Your bill must be paid in full by April 10, 2020, so that Shelley has time to deposit all the money and write one check for the retreat.
If you’ve never been on a guild retreat, it’s a great way to get to know lots of guild members better. You’ll learn something new from observing others or from mini-lessons, and you’ll have a chance to discover new fabrics and kits when Julie (Melissa’s assistant) presents her show and tell.
Reserve your spot for just $25. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards. See Grace Stroud to sign up or for more information.

FRAYED KNOTS BEE Feeling very deprived for not getting to spend time with these bee friends
We are keeping in contact by phone, which is not satisfactory.
Looking forward to …JULY???... so we can be together again.
Ann Houpt, Scribe
ROGUES: Due to distancing we are working at home on our Quilts of Valor projects.
Girls…it’s time to trade again, or else finish the one you already have?
Sara suggested a conference call for our meeting – if we can set it up – it’ll be fun.
Prayers for Laurel who is under the weather.

BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, teacher, and friend. We lost her way too early. The fund was set up to help those in need to be able to enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops. We should be able to send 2 people to retreat this year. Application forms will be available at the November and December meetings or by sending an email request to Karen Holder. Applications should be in no later than the end of January. The applications may be given to a member of the board or to Grace Stroud.
NICU QUILTS
Information from JPS for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Quilts
We received a letter recently introducing us to Mitzi Vanderark, the new coordinator of volunteers at JPS. They love the quilts we send them. They included some criteria for us to follow.
For the baby blankets:
Receiving – 36” x 36”
Preemie – 18” x 18” (NO flannel)
Baby – 36” x 36”, or 36”-38” by 40”-42”
No larger than 38” x 42” but preferred size is 36” x 36”
Fleece and flannel are NOT accepted in the ICU, 100% cotton only for front and back.
All quilts should be washed after piecing and before donation to JPS.
NICU Quilts
Karen Holder
Report from the home front – Karen Holder’s home, that is.
After a working/eating/laughing session, we discovered a need for more finished NICU quilts.
If you can find a little time, about 2 yards of fabric and some batting, your efforts in putting it together will be greatly appreciated. Try out a new quilting technique or put on seasonal music and sew away.
Your donation of time, energy, goods and dedication = a gift of love to JPS NICU!
HUGS QUILT KIT INFORMATION SHEET
We are using the "Tile Tango" pattern for our Hugs Quilts. Here are some things you might need to know about the "kits":
Each kit has 16 heart blocks, one angel block, 12 bordered 9-patch blocks and 6 regular 9-patch blocks.
• The heart blocks are supposed to be 6 ½” x 6 ½”. Some of them might be larger and will need to be squared up. If they are much smaller, then add on a piece and try to match the background fabric as well as possible (white to white).
• There should be six 9-patch blocks that do not have a border on them. These 9-patches have NOT been measured to ensure they are 6 ½” square but they have been pretty accurate so far.
• The 12 bordered 9-patch blocks are supposed to measure 10 ½” x 10 ½”.
• You will need to provide the backing, binding and border fabrics. We think the border fabric should read "solid" in order for the framed 9-patches to show up.
• The hearts are used instead of the white spaces in the picture.
• In case the pattern picture is confusing, the hearts have 2 borders on them, either on the top & bottom or on the left & right sides, depending on which row they are on. The borders are 2 ½” x 6 ½”. The bordered 9-patch blocks go around the outside and the other 9-patch blocks are on the inside.
Please return the finished top, backing and binding to Karen in the provided bag. She will see that they are quilted and bound, unless you want to do either of those.
Have fun putting these tops together and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING. These quilts are made with LOTS OF LOVE and are very precious to the recipients.

LOVIES QUILTS
A big thanks to all who donate fabric and time for the lovies. These are greatly needed and appreciated by the NICU at Harris downtown and the parents of the premies.
It helps to give the scent of the mothers to the babies and the scent of the babies to the mothers. We still need some cotton fabrics that read solid in red, green, blue and yellow.
Thank you,
Beverly Peterson

I didn’t know if your quilters guild was continuing to make masks for medical staff? I’ve read recently about different types of fabric being more effective, like quilters cotton or batik, but I work with a hospice and home health team with nurses, social workers, physicians and I would love to be able to meet somebody in Fort Worth and pick up any masks. If you know of anyone better to contact or reach out too, please, I would love that information.
My cell phone is +18084647151 and I live over by Hulen Mall, but I can meet somebody anywhere in town.
Thank you so much,
Kelley Newman
