Upper Adams School District's Mission and Vision is:
All Students College and Career Ready.
A message from Superintendent, Wesley T. Doll, Ed.D.
Welcome Back Canner Nation!
We are excited to see all classrooms filled with students again at Upper Adams School District. The past two years have certainly impacted each of us in different ways and we are still feeling the effects personally and collectively. The past two months we have been a whirlwind of communications and information from many sources (i.e., CDC, DOH, PDE, local media, etc.). Regardless of everything that is happening around us, we are still in this pandemic together. While many may not agree on the particulars (i.e., masks or no masks/vaccinations or no vaccinations), we all want students to be safe and attending school in person. It is important that we all treat each other respectfully during these extremely challenging times. Regardless of what you believe about masks and vaccinations, one thing you can do to assist our efforts in keeping our classrooms and schools open is staying home and keeping your students at home if there is illness or exposure to COVID-19. Please work with your healthcare provider and notify the school nurses know about any diagnosed sickness so we can track sicknesses accurately. Again, let’s work together through this pandemic.
We will continue to utilize our website www.upperadams.org and other forms of district electronic communications to keep the school community informed. If you have not received any communications at this point, please contact your child’s school to verify your current contact information is up-to-date. In this newsletter you will find information about the following topics:
o 2021-2022 Academic Calendar
o Student Registration Information
o Business Office Updates
o Transportation Reminders
o Food Services Information
o Employment Opportunities Information
o Class of 2021 Awards, Scholarships, and Recognitions
o Curriculum Information

o Other Contact Information
As you visit our schools during the 2021-2022 school year, please take time to welcome our newest UASD Family Members at each building. We are excited as we create a partnership and work together to achieve our district mission, vision, and building/student goals. Working together we will be able to continue to enhance the education we provide each and every student in our district.
It’s a new school year! Best wishes for a great year together. GO CANNERS!

Parent Reminders from Transportation
If changes need to be made to your student’s bus stop, it is important that you contact the Transportation Department at 717-677-7191 ext. 2711 or email Kim.Smith@upperadams.org.
Students need to be at the bus stop 5-10 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled pick-up time.
Food Services - Updates for 2021-2022
For the 2021-2022, all students regardless of economic status have the option to receive a free breakfast and lunch daily. If students wish to purchase additional items during breakfast or lunch, they must have the funds available to purchase. We strongly encourage families to complete the free/reduced meal application so it does not impact any current or future benefits that you are receiving. Families can apply online at Online Free/Reduced Meal Application or for a printed copy please visit: Free/Reduced Meal Application (English) or Free/Reduced Meal Application (Spanish). Please contact your local building for a printed copy, if needed.
If a student’s cafeteria account has a negative balance, the student will be offered a standard breakfast or lunch, as defined by the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program (NSLP, NSBP). No charges will be allowed for extra items, such as a-la-carte options, drinks, or second meals.
All foods available in district schools during the school day will be offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity. Foods provided through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs will comply with federal nutrition standards under the School Meals Initiative. All competitive foods and beverages available to student in district schools during the school day will comply with the Nutritional Standards for Competitive Foods in Pennsylvania Schools.
The cafeteria operates under strict state and federal regulations governing the preparation and serving of foods. Menus for each building are available at: https://upperadams.nutrislice.com/.
Note: Chartwells may experience difficulty in purchasing food items or receiving partially filled items from the shortages in manufacturing. Chartwells may need to change the menu to reflect items that are available for purchase. Our goal remains the same: to serve delicious and nutritious meals to all students every day.
Account Balance Information
MYSCHOOLBUCKS.COM: The Upper Adams School District is pleased to offer an online option for families to pay for student lunches. Our Food Service Department accepts payments for school meals through MySchoolBucks.com – an online payment service. MySchoolBucks.com offer a secure transaction gateway that accepts all major credit cards/debit cards as a means of adding money to your child’s meal account. Note: there is a service fee to use this service.
(IMPORTANT: The District participated with MySchoolBucks.com to provide parents/guardians the opportunity to view their child’s account 24/7. Setting up and viewing the account is free. Making a payment to their account online is optional)
If a payment by personal check is returned to the School District, marked “Non-Sufficient Funds” (NSF), the School District will reverse the credit to the student’s account in the amount of the original check. A $25.00 fee will be assessed for NSF checks returned to the School District. This may result in a negative balance in the account and the procedures listed below will be followed for charging meals and paying the overdue balance.
Negative Balance Information
If your student has a negative balance, please pay the outstanding balance prior to the end of the school year. Payment may be made using MySchoolBucks, https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/login/getlogin or by sending a check in with your student to be applied to their account.
The initial collection of negative balances will be communicated to the parents/guardians by the 15th of every month. If at the end of the school year, June 2, 2022, the student continues to have a negative balance, the negative balance may be referred to a collection agency.
Effective for the 2021-2022 school year, any year-end negative balances will be sent to collections. If you should have questions, please contact Ms. Cless at 717-677-7191 ext. 2740 or k.cless@upperadams.org

Canner Curriculum Corner
The Upper Adams School District Curriculum Department is looking forward to an exciting and productive 2021–2022 school year! With the ever-increasing demands and rigor placed upon our students, we continuously reevaluate and revise our current curriculum to maintain proper alignment and connection to the Pennsylvania Core Standards and their approved Eligible Content. One focus area this year for the Upper Adams School District, particularly at the elementary level, will be on further training and professional development with our Math in Focus Program.
The Math in Focus Program focuses on problem solving as the foundation of mathematical
learning using a variety of models to help students visualize and understand mathematical
concepts. This program teaches concepts using a concrete–pictorial–abstract learning
progression to anchor student knowledge in real-world, hands-on experiences, supported by
technology applications. Positive student interactions with math are encouraged, which results in students developing an ability to easily solve complex, real–world math problems.
A typical Math In Focus lesson will begin with teaching and learning through guided practice.
Students will be introduced to new concepts at the concrete level and then led to the pictorial
and finally the abstract. This progression allows students to touch and move physical
manipulatives as they develop number sense and mental math skills. Students are then able to develop and explain their thought process versus just memorizing an answer.
Another focus area will be with our school counselors and making sure our students are
receiving the social and emotional support they need as they transition back to a new school
year, from the previous school year, where many times instruction may have been conducted
remotely, online, in–person, or a combination of the three. Career exploration (K–12) and
meeting the corresponding mandates from the State continue be a focus for our school
counselors as well.
The Upper Adams School District follows the Federal Statue – Every Student Succeeds Act
(ESSA), which was first implemented in 2015. Since that time, there have been many several
changes with the implementation and administration of the Title I Program at Biglerville
Elementary. The curriculum department has embraced these changes each school year and will be working to maintain the integrity and opportunities of the Title Program for our students.
In addition to the above focus areas, the curriculum department continues to work to meet
state regulations and standards with mandated testing, compliance monitoring, data analysis,
state reporting, staff professional development/training, and resource attainment for staff &
students. In addition, professional development for all K–12 staff members in technology
integration will continue into the 2021–2022 school year.
Curriculum is the heart beat of the students’ academic experience. It is a process that does not slow down nor is it ever finished. Professional staff members and administrators work incessantly to maintain a relevant, rigorous, and updated curriculum that meets the standards
of today and prepares our students for the world of tomorrow. Curriculum committees
continue to meet throughout the school year and summer to work on revising their curriculum
to reflect the latest standards, trends, and innovations in their specific content areas. Our
professional staff is always standing by to receive the next step for their curriculum as our goal is to always provide the students with a world–class education full of opportunities for them to reach their potential.
We look forward to a very positive & productive 2021–2022 school year filled with engaging,
insightful, and rigorous learning activities for our students. All of our students will be college & career ready when they receive their diplomas!
Learning is thriving in Canner Nation!
