A Thanksgiving Message from Mr. Melillo
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I find myself reflecting on the incredible sense of gratitude and warmth that exists in our school community. In the spirit of this season of thanks, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation for each and every one of you.
Our school district is more than just a collection of buildings; it is a family, a community of learners, educators, and families working together to create a nurturing and enriching environment for our students. This Thanksgiving, I am particularly grateful for the sense of unity and collaboration that defines us.
I am thankful for the dedicated teachers and staff who go above and beyond every day to inspire and educate our students. Your passion and commitment do not go unnoticed, and the positive impact you have on our children's lives is immeasurable.
To our students, thank you for your curiosity, enthusiasm, and unlimited potential. Your eagerness to learn and grow is what makes our schools vibrant and full of promise. Keep reaching for the stars, and know that we believe in each and every one of you.
To the families of our students, thank you for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your children. Your support and partnership are invaluable, and together, we can continue to create an environment where every child can thrive.
As we gather with our loved ones to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to cherish the warmth of family and the joy of friendship. May this holiday be a time of reflection, gratitude, and connection.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and moments of shared joy.
Sincerely,
Chris
Paraprofessional of the Year!
Congratulations to Amy Santoro for being named Newtown Public Schools Paraprofessional of the Year. Amy was honored by the State Board of Education at a meeting in Hartford with Principal, Chris Moretti to celebrate this remarkable achievement. Amy proudly represented Newtown as the Paraprofessional of the Year and received well-deserved recognition for being a finalist in this prestigious competition. Amy's dedication and contributions as a paraprofessional have made her an invaluable asset to our community, and we were thrilled to witness her accomplishments being acknowledged at the state level.
Trick or Treating
The Municipal Center hosted an exciting Preschool Halloween Trick or Treating event that brought joy and spooktacular fun to the youngest members of our community. Children in colorful costumes visited the office, where they were greeted with smiles and treats by staff members, creating a safe and delightful Halloween experience. The event not only fostered a sense of community but also filled the young trick-or-treaters with enthusiasm as they collected goodies in the festive spirit of Halloween. Even our IT Department got into the holiday spirit, dressed as Crayola Crayons!
Veterans Day Ceremonies
All of our schools hosted Veterans Day ceremonies. Veterans Day ceremonies in schools play a crucial role in fostering a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by military veterans and cultivating a sense of national pride among students. These ceremonies serve as a powerful educational tool, allowing students to connect with the history and significance of Veterans Day. By actively involving students in such events, schools promote values like gratitude, respect, and patriotism. The schoolwide events provide an opportunity for veterans to share their experiences, creating a tangible link between the younger generation and those who have served in the armed forces. In honoring veterans, schools instill a sense of civic responsibility and encourage students to reflect on the freedoms and privileges they enjoy due to the dedication of those who have defended the nation.
Congratulations to Michelle Hiscavich (NHS) and Phil Cruz (NMS) for earning the American Legion Community Americanism Award. State Representatives Marty Foncello and Mitch Bolinsky attended both the NMS and NHS ceremonies to present the awards. Thank you to First Selectman, Dan Rosenthal for his inspirational words at the High School ceremony.
Our guest speaker at Newtown High School was Dennis Mannion (USMC). It was an honor to have my High School English teacher speak at the ceremony and also reunite with him after almost 40 years. Dennis is a Vietnam Veteran and a veteran advocate. He provided an inspirational story about his time at Khe Sanh in 1968. Dennis was by far my most inspiring teacher who cultivated not just my academic growth but also instilled a lifelong love for learning by fostering a classroom environment where curiosity, creativity, and compassion thrived. He is the reason why I became an educator. His message of peace was received well by the audience.
Newtown Teacher of the Year!
Our Newtown Teacher of the Year was honored at The State Teacher of the Year Ceremony. The Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program began in 1952 and is held every year to recognize and honor teacher excellence. The program is sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Education in partnership with the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Council. Each year, the process begins with school districts selecting a District Teacher of the Year through their local process. The District Teachers of the Year provide biographical and professional information in an online application to be considered for the Connecticut Teacher of the Year honor. Connecticut’s teacher is then eligible for consideration to become the National Teacher of the Year. On Wednesday, October 15th I attended the State Teacher of the Year Celebration at The Bushnell in Hartford with Jay Edwards. All local school district nominees, semifinalists, finalists, and the Connecticut Teacher of the Year are recognized individually at this awards ceremony. More than 1000 guests were present at the event. Jay is an exemplary educator who consistently goes above and beyond to inspire and guide students on their academic journeys. His passion for teaching, innovative approaches in the classroom, and unwavering commitment to student success make him a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious recognition.
Rivalry Night
Come out tonight and support our Nighthawks in the annual Thanksgiving rivalry game. The football rivalry between Newtown High School and Masuk High School is a storied and intense competition that captivates the communities and fans alike. Each year, the clash between these two schools transcends the boundaries of a mere game, becoming a cultural event that unites residents in spirited support. The history of close matchups and dramatic moments on the field has fueled the passion surrounding this rivalry. This annual gridiron showdown not only showcases the athletes of the teams but also embodies the deep-rooted traditions and school spirit that make high school sports an integral part of the local identity.
French Day
Newtown High School's French Day, hosted by the French World Language classes, was a vibrant celebration that immersed students in the rich culture of France. Attendees indulged in an array of delectable French foods, participated in lively French games, and were treated to impressive displays showcasing the students' projects, highlighting their dedication to mastering the language and understanding its cultural nuances. The event provided a dynamic and immersive experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for the French language and its diverse cultural influences.
