What is STEM EXPO 2024 at TAF@Saghalie?
TAF@Saghalie STEM Expo March 7th!
In January students began a new project cycle in which they began working on an interdisciplinary project in all of their classes. Their projects center around community issues and involve them designing a solution for the issue. How they present their solutions varies from telling an adventure story to making a shark tank pitch. Students are working on their projects and will present their final products at the STEM EXPO event on March 7, 2024.
See below for the projects happening this year at the school.
6th Grade Science on Wheels
The Pacific Science Center brought the Science on Wheels "Blood and Guts" workshops and Exhibition to the 6th Grade students school on Monday to support their STEM Expo project.
Exhibits included "Main Frame, Visual Eyes and Peace of Mind"
The 6th Grade STEM Expo Driving Question is:
- How do we mitigate the impacts of an environmental factor [students choice] on an organ system [student choice]
- Students have to create a "hero's journey" in which they create a story in which a hero will enter the human system to diagnose and provide a solution to a sickened organ. Their story has to be scientifically and mathematically accurate (including the method (digestion, skin absorption, injection, etc) and speed the hero travels to the site of impact.
7th Grade Science on Wheets
The 7th Grade STEM Expo Driving Question is:
- As Earth is depleted of its resources, how can we consider the exploration and settlement of other planets in our galaxy?
- You have been hired by NASA to choose an exoplanet to explore in order to take people to a habitable planet. You will need to convince NASA which exoplanet is the best one to explore and bring people to - You will also need to influence people to join your mission to go live on an exoplanet! Students will create a "museum exhibit" with propaganda poster.
8th Grade Classes Assisting Community Members
8th Grade students are partnering with local community members to provide High Tech solutions to problems they may be encountering.
Project Overview:
- Community partners the students are partnering with include Aegis Senior Center, South King Fire, MaST Aquarium, and our own Learning Support Team at Saghalie.
High School Shark Tank Presentations
HS school students are pitching STEM Expo projects in a Shark Tank presentation style. Projects are focused around three driving questions.
9th/10th grade
- How can we make a specific resource for well-being more accessible to our community?
11th/12th
- How can we improve upon a medical intervention already being used by a member of our community?
HS Environmental Science :
- How do we measure and reduce water consumption at our school?
