Sageland MicroSociety Elementary
Parent Update Week of Dec. 11-15, 2023
Family College Opportunities at EPCC
The idea behind the Family College is to help working adults with young children get back in school. Additionally, the program is open to any EPCC students currently enrolled at the college either in credit or non-credit courses. Courses in both English and Speech will be offered during the evening and on Saturdays of the Spring 2024 semester while simultaneously offering courses for children in the EPCC Children’s College. For those parents who participate in this program, tuition waivers are available for the cost of the Children’s College.

Message from the Principal
Greetings Sageland Learning Community,
Hope you had an enjoyable weekend! We are 8 days away from our Holiday Break! Thank you for supporting your child’s educational experience at Scottieland! Our amazing faculty and staff are committed to providing the best education for our students.
Our average attendance for the year is 95.76%! Our campus goal remains 97% or higher! Let’s make these last days before tracking out count by ensuring our students are at school each day! As we close out our 2nd Nine Weeks, it is vital that our students are at school to finalize their grades and complete final checkpoint assessments for the year.
This week, we have our Christmas Luncheon for 3rd-5th grade students on Wednesday and Coffee with the Principal on Friday. We hope you can join us!
Let’s finish our semester STRONG! Wishing all our families a fantastic week ahead! J. Salas

Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
Sageland takes great pride in our safety procedures for all students and staff. We are asking you to help us to ensure that our school continues to be a safe and happy community. To that end, parents can walk students to the perimeter of the school for drop off and pick-up, but will not be allowed to enter past the gates/building. Students will enter the building and wait outside their classrooms in the morning and will be dismissed in the afternoon at the same area as drop off. Also, please pay special attention to the map and procedures below for more detailed information.
- PK 3 AM & PK4 Classes-Students will be dropped off in the cafeteria and picked up on the side door in the 100 Hallway closest to the teacher parking area on La Paz Dr.
PK3 PM Class-Students will be dropped off and picked up on the side door in the 100 Hallway closest to the teacher parking area on La Paz Dr.
Kinder will be dropped off and picked up through the Cafeteria entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do we wait for the school day to begin?
Parents who arrive before 7:15 will wait outside the drop off designated areas with their child. First through fifth grade parents, please drop off your child by car at the designated area. Parents in PK3, PK4 and Kindergarten students will need to be walked to the cafeteria entrance for both drop off and dismissal.
What do I do if we are late to school?
If late to school, please walk your child to the front entrance. Please ring the bell on the screen, let the front office staff know your child’s name and the reason for the tardy. A staff member will come to the door to have you sign your child in. Your child will be let into the building, given a tardy slip, escorted to class if in PK-1 and sent to class if 2-5. We ask that tardies do not become habitual as students miss breakfast and instructional time. After 4 tardies, students will be assigned lunch detention by administration.
What do I do if I am picking up early?
Please ring the bell, and have your current United States I.D. or passport ready. You will report to the front counter and sign your child out. Please wait for your child to be called out of class. They will meet you at the front office area. We ask that early pick ups be kept at a minimum to maximize instructional time for our students.
What if my child goes to an after school program (Boys and Girls Club or Parks and Recreational City Program)?
Your child will be picked up by the respective after school program personnel and escorted to the cafeteria or gym at the end of day. Please ask the corresponding program for their policies and procedures regarding procedures, behavioral expectations, and dismissal. (Flyer attached)
What if I cannot pick-up my child at dismissal time due to work, school etc.?
All children need to be picked up at 2:45. There are certain weeks where some students will stay for after-school tutoring. Please be sure to pick up your child promptly at the end of the tutoring session. There is no personnel to care for students once they are no longer in an academic setting. Please make arrangements for after school care.
Can my child play on the playground (O.L.E.-Outside Learning Environment) before/after school?
Students are not allowed to play on the playground before or after school as there are no monitors available to watch these areas at those times.
Thank you for working with us to ensure that Sageland’s drop off and pick up times are safe and happy. We appreciate your support.
SAFETY EXPECTATIONS
Visitor policy will be enforced. Visitors must have a current United States ID or passport prior to entering the campus and background screening will be conducted through the Hall Pass System.
- To help us monitor who is expected on campus for the day, please schedule conferences with teachers and appointments with administration in advance.
Volunteers must be cleared on a daily basis through the campus Hall Pass System and must be registered as an active volunteer through the District Affairs office; this includes field trips. If interested in being a volunteer, please refer to this LINK.
Due to increased security and safety protocols, we will not be allowing parents to drop off lunches during the day for students. Students need to bring their lunches with them in the morning. We will only allow if the student forgot their lunch in the car but not habitual drop off of lunches. (ALL students receive free lunch in our cafeteria, therefore students will always have a meal available to them.)
If a student forgets their backpack, you can drop it off at the front office. We ask that this be kept at minimum and not habitual.
- Birthday Celebrations: Celebrations will take place 15 minutes prior to the end of the day. Please only bring store bought cupcakes and/or cookies, as cakes take much more time to distribute. Please be aware of food allergies as they relate to your child's class.
Emergency preparedness (drills) activities will be conducted throughout the school year.
DISTRICT ATTENDANCE POLICY & PROCEDURES
ABSENCES
Students who are not in class when attendance is taken will be counted tardy or absent. The parent must contact the school by phone, in writing, or in person to explain the reason for every absence within 72 hours or sooner of the student’s absence to avoid loss of class work credit and possibly truancy court referral. Attendance staff will document every contact parent/guardian makes with the school, whether absences will be excused or unexcused.
EXCUSED & UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Excused absences are legitimate days of absence necessitated by personal illness, death in the immediate family, or a student teen parent taking her/his child to the doctor. Documentation is required when students are absent due to a doctor's appointment, a court date, or other official business.
If a student is absent without school permission or permitted exception, that absence will be counted as an unexcused absence. In this case, the student may receive a zero for all work missed and parents will be notified. If necessary, an attendance warning will be issued, charges will be filed against parents to enforce the compulsory school attendance law if absences of this nature persist. See Reg. FE-R.
90% Rule for Promotion
A student must be present 90% of the days the class is offered in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Except as provided by state law, all absences, whether excused or unexcused, must be considered in determining whether a student has attended the required percentage of days.
TARDIES
Students must be in their classrooms and ready to receive instruction by the 7:45 a.m tardy bell. An elementary school student who arrives after the 7:45 a.m. will be counted tardy for the day. It is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian to contact the school by telephone, in writing, or in person to verify the reason for the tardy (unless a doctor’s appointment or school activity/business has been approved and documented).
- CAMPUS TARDY POLICY: Students who accumulate 4 tardies will be assigned lunch detention by administration on the 4th day.
LEAVING CAMPUS
For students in elementary, a parent or authorized adult noted in the student's emergency card must come to the office and sign the student out. The adult person signing the child out must show proof of identification prior to releasing the child. Once the identity is verified, a campus representative will send for the student and bring him or her to the office. For safety purposes and stability of the learning environment, we cannot allow anyone other than authorized school personnel to go to the classroom or any other area to pick up the student. Excessive requests for permission for students to leave early will be monitored by the campus administration and conferences with the parent/guardian will be scheduled to resolve the situation. The parent will sign an early dismissal card from the attendance office in accordance with school procedure. Upon the student’s return, the student must report to the attendance office to be admitted to class.
