The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
Today is Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is traditionally considered an unlucky day and people often associate it with superstitions and negative beliefs, such as bad luck, accidents, and misfortune. The idea of Friday the 13th being an unlucky day can be traced back to various factors. One popular theory is that it originated from a combination of two superstitions: the fear of the number 13 (triskaidekaphobia) and the belief that Friday is an unlucky day.
Your perception of Friday the 13th can greatly impact your experience of the day. Instead of buying into superstitions, you can choose to see it as just another day. Treat it with the same level of optimism and enthusiasm as any other day of the week. Learning about the history and origins of superstitions regarding Friday the 13th can help you realize that they are often based on unfounded beliefs. By educating yourself about the lack of concrete evidence for bad luck on this day, you can begin to dismiss these superstitions. Making Friday the 13th a positive day is a matter of personal choice. You can take control of your mindset and decide to approach the day with a positive outlook. Focusing on the opportunities and potential for good things to happen on this day, just like any other day. Start the day with positive intentions and a mindset that good things can occur. This can set the tone for a more positive experience. Use this day as a chance to do something unique, enjoyable, or adventurous. Break away from routine and make it a memorable day. Spread positivity by engaging in acts of kindness, helping others, or contributing to the well-being of those around you. By focusing on your perception, education, and the choice to view Friday the 13th in a positive light, you can transcend the superstitions and make it a day filled with optimism and good experiences. I choose to make this a positive day, because today is another day I get to be a Pirate!

OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
OHS Girls Golf
Girls Golf is picture perfect;
Before the girls golf season began, coach Tyson Allen looked at his schedule and flirted with, at the time, an absurd idea.
"It's possible, we could win every match this season," said Allen, who is always positive, but doesn't get sucked into the world of coaching hyperbole.
Those around Allen smiled and shook their collective heads.
Undefeated?? A pretty tall task when considering poor play, illness, teenage angst, etc.
Gradually, as the wins piled up and the losses were nowhere to be found, people found Allen's statement more truth than folly.
But still, it's golf, where the weather, a poor swing, or an unforgiving course can turn a match around in a matter of minutes.
As the sun set to the west of the Oceanside Municipal Golf course on Tuesday among a small group of friends and family, the Pirates turned their sunny side up coach into a prophet as the unthinkable became reality.
The Pirates defeated visiting La Costa Canyon, 220-243, to complete the perfect season, 10-0 in the Avocado League and 17-0 overall. In addition, Oceanside claimed its third consecutive league title in girls golf for the first time in school history.
Undefeated seasons are a rarity at OHS. You would have to go back to football coach John Carroll's 2008 team that went unbeaten (12-0-1) and coach Bill Wagner's swim teams nearly 50 years ago to find squads that didn't put numbers in the L-column.
Against the Mavericks, Lia Nance was the match medalist with a 37, while Danyele Bertino shot a 42 and Kassidy Stevens carded a 43. Emma Brown, Lelia Kai Hernandez and Maggie McMahan rounded out the roster for Pirates, who play in the North County Tournament on Monday and Wednesday next week.
Boys Water Polo loses to Classical
The Oceanside boys water polo team looked like an uncomfortable passenger with a middle seat on a sold-out Southwest Airlines flight against Classical Academy at the William A. Wagner Aquatic Center Thursday night.
Forced to play in a smaller tank because of a scheduling issue, the Pirates, who like to use their superior swimming speed to negate their youthful frames, were fighting for leg space and elbow room. Unfortunately, there were not any upgrades available for Oceanside which dropped a highly competitive 11-8 Avocado League contest.
The Pirates played a competitive first-half, exchanging blows with the Caimans, but size and strength won out over speed and quickness in the second half trailing by three goals twice in the second half.
Colin DuBois led Oceanside with 3 goals. Jack Fritz and Blake Munoz each scored twice and John DiMento had a goal for the Pirates, who were missing two starters because of injury.
Girls volleyball sweeps Wildcats
It used to be unimaginable for Oceanside to win a game or match against crosstown rival El Camino in girls volleyball.
That was until last season, when the Pirates swept both matches.
After Tuesday night, OHS raised the Jolly Roger flag and claimed the city championship again.
The Pirates made it four consecutive wins over their city rival with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 Valley League victory.
Opposite Faye Naotala led the OHS attack with 14 kills and 9 service aces. Freshman outside hitter Alaina Wright had nine kills and setter Elena Gonzalez-Hughes had 21 assists, 6 digs, 5 kills and 3 aces. Libero Kaylee Noa had 11 digs to pace the defense.
With injuries and new rotations, Oceanside struggled in the first set before finding a rhythm, tying it at 22-22 and pulling away for the 25-23 win.
In the second set, the Pirates raced out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back, taking a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 victory.
Finally, in the third set, Gonzalez-Hughes and Dublin Leeds came up with some clutch serving late in the set as Wright put the match away with a thunderous kill.
Pirates dominate Longhorns
It had been five years since the Oceanside football team visited Rancho Buena Vista.
On that evening in 2018, a rogue lightning storm cancelled the game midway through the second quarter and the Pirates were given an abbreviated 28-7 victory.
On Friday night, Oceanside brought the thunder instead and it lasted for four quarters.
The Pirates' defense held the Longhorns to 74 yards total offense and forced four turnovers in the 35-0 Valley League victory. OHS is now 4-0 in league and 5-3 overall and if it can win its remaining two games against Vista and Valley Center, the Pirates would clinch the Valley League championship.
Middle linebacker Esias Juarez led defense with an interception, fumble recovery, and forced fumble and defensive tackle Omar Bello recovered two fumbles as the Pirates flexed their collective muscles in the second half. Oceanside limited RBV to just 5 yards in the final 24 minutes.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Pirates' offense seemed to hit its stride as quarterback Joseph Vinup threw touchdown passes to Trey Nastazio (29 yards) and David Daniels (35 yards) for 14-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Nastazio caught his second TD pass from Vinup on a 34-yard strike down the left sidelines. Backup running back Christopher David had a 1-yard TD run and Riley O'Malley caught a screen pass from quarterback Andrew Miller and went 48 yards for the game's final scoring play.
E-bike Safety
E-bikes are more popular than ever and as their popularity increases, education about e-bike safety is of the utmost importance.
Did you know?
Riders age 17 and younger must wear a helmet.
It is illegal to carry passengers on your e-bike unless it features an additional permanent seat.
Sidewalks are meant for pedestrians, not e-bikes.
Riding against the flow of traffic is prohibited.

OHS PTSO
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form 2023-24. If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
