A Note from the Superintendent

-- we get by with a little help from our friends

One of the great things about the Savannah R3 District is the unparalleled support we receive from our community, local business owners, alums, and from all across Savage Nation. Two of our elementary campuses have recently benefited from the generosity of Mary Ingersoll, owner of Inspirations Academy. Ingersoll’s Bloom After School program received $300,000 in grants from the Missouri Department of Education to support the start-up of its new afterschool program. While the money could have been spent in ways that solely benefited the program and the children who participate, Mary worked with district administrators to find improvements that would help Bloom Afterschool and the campuses they are currently housed*. Be sure to take a moment to read through the list of improvements listed in this newsletter.

*Bloom After School is an independent program not run by or affiliated with the Savannah R3 School District. The program rents space within Minnie Cline and John Glenn elementary campuses for the ease of our District Families.

. . .

As you’ll read in the board briefs, we are taking significant strides toward the much-needed capital improvements across the district. The board will work with Raymond James on a lease financing program to capture an excess of $2.6 million for the purpose of making energy savings improvements across the district. Revenue used to repay the 9-year lease will be generated through the April 2022 $0.15 levy increase earmarked for capital improvements. While the terms of this lease financing agreement have not yet been finalized, this option allows the board to begin work on projects immediately - before inflation raises labor and material costs.

Maintenance projects to be completed include

  • masonry repair/ tuckpointing to stop interior water infiltration

  • correction of storm drainage issues

  • Structural wall repairs and stabilization

  • Window replacements

  • HVAC upgrades

  • Electrical system upgrades to support current needs

  • Welding area exhaust system

Cleanest Building Award

The Minnie Cline custodians won the cleanest building in the District contest through Hiliyards scoring a 95% in building cleanliness. They also made this happen while being short one custodian position for most of the year!

Code word: FUN

Our elementary students are learning to code! Minnie Cline students had to work to earn a "driving licence" by working through several prompts, challenges, and obstacles. Not only do these programs teach our children valuable technology lessons, they require a higher level "out of the box" thinking that sets them up for success.

It's never too EARLY to learn!

Last month our High School students had the opportunity to learn about careers in health care during the Breakfast with an Expert. A panel of local health care workers shared their knowledge about careers in dentistry, respiratory therapy, public health, and nursing. Thank you to United Way for coordinating this opportunity for our students.

How will I know if school is canceled?

Evening decisions: If a decision is made in the evening to cancel school for the next day, automated phone calls will begin no later than 9:45 pm, with the latest call going out at approximately 10:30 pm.

Morning decision: If a decision is made after 9:30 pm the night before (after the point where a broadcast could be launched by 9:45 pm), the broadcast will begin at 6 am the next morning, with the latest calls going out at approximately 6:45 am.

Employee notification: District staff members will receive an automated call as soon as the decision is made, as late as 11 pm the night before, or as early as 5 am on the morning of cancellation.

Canceling in the middle of the school day: If weather forces an early closure, we will contact all parents and emergency contacts and notice area media outlets. It is so important for us to be able to reach parents, guardians, and caregivers during daytime hours. Please give your child’s school any current phone numbers and emergency contact information.

Other Sources of information

Any time of the day or night, here’s where anyone can learn if schools will be closed:
  • Facebook page: facebook.com/SavannahSchoolDistrict

Every effort is made to announce weather cancellations as soon as possible after a decision is made.
