Community Update
October 13, 2023
This year, we started off with many new and exciting developments.
First, we are thrilled with the progress of our NRHS Sports Complex capital improvement project, which includes redesigns of the weight room, a new turf field, eight lane track, surrounding lights and press box. The new state-of-the-art community facility will provide our staff, students, athletes, residents and children with incredible resources to support learning, playing and competing.
With the weight room nearing completion, we look forward to unveiling the space NR Together and NR Strong in the coming weeks via a ribbon cutting ceremony and community reveal on our social media channels.
While the construction has been underway it’s been tremendous to play our home football games at the Haverstraw sports complex. Having the games on Friday nights under the lights has provided us all with an exciting preview of the energy, camaraderie and memorable moments we will host inside our own stadium next fall.
Next we’ve launched additional initiatives and programs this year, many of which started off as student led enterprises. Now more than ever, student engagement is at the center of our focus. We want to give students, especially at the secondary level, every opportunity to be the change they want to see in the world or leave a lasting legacy in the form of a new club, event or activity they are passionate about.
Kicking off this month is our student VOICE group sponsored Community Costume Drive, which is available district wide to provide all students/families who wish to participate, with costumes to celebrate our traditional Halloween events. Classroom and community-building ideas like this help educators ensure that students in every grade feel like they belong. Promoting positive ideas from learners is something the NRCSD leadership team stands firmly behind.
Finally, as this week was National School Lunch Week, I wanted to provide information about the Healthy Meals grant supporting our ongoing efforts to provide nutritional meals. The funding obtained by our food service and business office teams not only allows us to provide free meals but expand our programming and give students and the community even more opportunities to learn about food and nourishment. We are excited to offer new nutrition-focused food options, workshops, physical activities and curriculum to our classrooms as well as trips to local farms that will give students the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy eating choices for themselves and their families.
I look forward to all that’s ahead this month and year.

SOCK-Tober Drives
Many of our school this year are hosting SOCK-Tober drives for local charities. Last year our schools raised thousands of socks for those in need. Check with your specific building or PTA's for participating schools and drop off locations.
Fire Prevention Week
To kick off Fire Prevention Week, our hometown heroes from the West Haverstraw and Thiells Fire Departments visited West Haverstraw Elementary. The Firefighters educated the students on fire prevention and safety. It wasn’t all about education though, as the students had a BLAST shooting the fire hose and getting to explore the trucks. More photos.
One more Fall College and Career Fair Remains!
NRCSD's second Fall College and Career Fair! This week's fair at the NRHS was a great success. The school was buzzing from start to finish of the day long event held across the auditorium lobby. High schoolers were able to stop by the for the first time or attend again, to meet with with admissions counselors and recruiters of another long, diverse list of universities as well as representatives from local organizations. At each event the Counseling Department/NR College and Career Center host different agencies than the one before to offer teens a variety of opportunities to form important connections for post graduation schooling, the job market and employment.

Raiders of the Week
Red Raider of the Week
Jonni Bacelli is our Red Raider of the Week! Jonni is an eighth grader at Fieldstone Middle School and is on the modified NR-Red’s soccer team. Bacelli has been a stellar athlete this season with a number of impressive plays on the field. He scored a hat-trick in Red's win against Fieldstone White and followed up with a goal and the game-winning assist against Nanuet. Coach Will Widimier said, “His hard work has helped his teammates on the pitch, dropping back into midfield at times to solidify possession. Jonni is an instrumental figure in the team's early success!” NR-Red is currently 2-1 this season. Let’s make some #REDANDWHITENOISE for Jonni!
Lady Raider of the Week
Maggie Maurer is our Lady Raider of the Week! Maggie is a senior captain on the field hockey team at North Rockland High School. Maurer is known to be a leader on and off the field who positively represents and advocates for the team, no wonder she is adored by the underclassman. As a member of multiple honor societies including National, World Language, Math, English, and Social Studies, she currently holds a 99% GPA. Maggie is also a part of VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse) and ASL club. Maurer is a clear example of what it means to be a student-athlete. Let’s make some #REDANDWHITENOISE for Maggie!!
