The CCG is happy to announce that we will be hosting our 3rd ROOTS Summit on February 17th from 9:30 am-1:30 pm. The CCG is partnering with the Healthy Union Advisory Coalition -- an independent body of over 60 community leaders and organizations working together to identify and address health and quality of life issues in Union County, for this summit. This ROOTS Summit will be focusing on deepening our networks of alliances to address substance use disorders. -Contact Kelli Wiles for more Information.

The CCG is pleased to announce that a collaborative writing project by Caroline Wisse-Gonzales, Lacey Ritter and Catherine Wright has been published by an international, peer-reviewed journal for sustainability. We are telling the story of the birth of the CCG -- and the reasons that we undertook this adventure. Want to read it? The CCG is happy to announce that we have been awarded an American Heart Association Mini-Grant thanks to the collaborative efforts of Hunger Corp VISTA Neely Griggs, Amy Jackson, and the IT Department. This Mini-Grant will go toward promoting heart health and addressing food insecurity in our Wingate community by creating a biweekly farmers market on campus (starting this Spring) and making Wingate Community Garden more accessible. This could mean new beds for the garden and more accessible ways for people with disabilities to come and enjoy the garden. To read the grant announcement just click the LINK.

Wingate has been selected as one of 18 institutions nationwide to collaborate with the AAC&U to research the development of civic engagement in higher education. A team of Wingate faculty (Joseph Ellis, Chelsea Kaufman, Candy Lapan, Nana Wolfe-Hill, Catherine Wright) will collect student artifacts from classes that seek to build students' civic skills through community activities (e.g., field experience, service-learning, community engagement, internships, etc.). The Wingate team also received professional development sessions on best practices some will become certified to use the AAC&U VALUE Rubric to assess civic outcomes. The student artifacts collected will be the first contributions to a nationwide database on civic pedagogy.

Candace Lapan had a book chapter proposal accepted to be included in the Society for Teaching Psychology e-book Empowering Students as Change Agents in Psychology Courses. The goal of the book is to provide Psychology instructors with methods for empowering students to be change agents with a particular focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candace's chapter will describe how Service-Learning provides a powerful tool for calling students to action in their communities and can be used to build more equitable outcomes in our communities and in the classroom. The publication is expected in the Fall.

Professor Scott Lail has had a journal article ("Reflections on Service-Learning in Tax During a Pandemic Period") accepted and published by the Journal of Service-Learning in Higher Education.

Completing service-learning in a tax-related environment is often an experience that provides opportunities for individuals to gain practical work experience and work through anxiety and stress at anytime-period. Add the unknowns of going through the COVID pandemic and the impacts it has on the experience, and this can take the stress and anxiety experiences to even higher levels. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to collect and analyze data related to the service-learning experience of participants during a pandemic period.

In Fall 2020, Candace Lapan planned and implemented a service-learning course here at Wingate in an Adult and Aging Psychology course. The course was taught in a synchronous format during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the attached report, one will learn firstly what service learning is. Secondly, one will learn what service-learning looks like in a Wingate University course. Thirdly, one will learn what the benefits of service learning are for our students and community members.

The next new thing rolling out of the Collaborative for the Common Good may not be as new as it seems. This semester, Dr. Eddie Case. Associate Professor of Science Education at Wingate and a prior CCG fellow, is building the foundation for creating a collaborative workspace where members of the university and the broader Wingate community can come together to design, make, and launch their ideas into the world. This semester Dr. Case was invited to attend a Life Design training seminar at Stanford University and he will be sharing his Design wisdom with WU students, faculty, staff, and teachers in Union County Public Schools!

Students Designing Their Future!

Wingate students completing independent studies with Dr. Case are planning for their future by applying the principles of design thinking to their lives. Following the Life Design model developed by Bill Burnett and David Evans, of the Life Design Labs at Stanford University, these students will finish with more than just skills such as resume writing or interview techniques. They leave with an “Odyssey Plan” guiding them to take actions on all aspects of their lives that will set them on the path to achieve their career and life goals.

Faculty Designing Together!

A number of faculty and staff are participating in the first ever Innovators’ Design Studio. Participants have been challenged to bring a problem or process from their job at Wingate to this studio time. They will then spend the semester learning the steps of the design thinking process and applying them to try to solve their problem with the help of their peers. At the end of their studio time, they will be prepared to apply design thinking principles to life’s questions as well as the “wicked problems” facing Wingate and the world beyond.

UCPS Teachers Designing a Better future for their students!

A group of UCPS school teachers spanning elementary through high school science, have formed the Wingate Science Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). These teachers will meet this semester to learn the principles of design thinking and applying them to answer the question, “what can Wingate University do to better support science education in UCPS?” Through their work, teachers will have a new tool for addressing problems and challenges, and they will have a problem solving method they can teach their students. They will also learn how to make use of under-used maker spaces in UCPS. Win-Win for all involved!
