Springmill STEM Family Update
October 15th, 2023
Principal's Message
Good afternoon,
It's hard to believe this is our last week of the first quarter. We have come a long way so far. Students are working hard, learning how to be STEM thinkers. This is more than hands-on fun, it is teaching students to be problem solvers. This month, we have been teaching students what it means to be CREATIVE problem solvers. Kindergarteners in Ms. Niedermier's class are creating an art museum of their own works based on a book they have been reading. Other classrooms are completing shorter inquiry based activities, where they are in charge of their own learning. Our 4th graders are learning about natural disasters and created dwellings that can withstand earthquakes. They will be testing the strength of their structures on our earthquake table this week! Even our art, music and gym classes integrate STEM design thinking into their activities.
We love to celebrate! We will be gathering information to celebrate our learners this week for attendance, achievement and behavior (PBIS). We will again be having our homeroom attendance competitions twice this year based how many students in each class have attendance of 90% or above. Classrooms with the highest percentage will win a field trip to a location in Mansfield. Last year they went to the YMCA, the Mansfield Art Center, and the Renaissance Theater.
We look forward to seeing you at our next family engagement event - Literacy Night! (see info below)
Sincerely,
Cara Will

Ohio School Safety Month
This week is Ohio's School Bus Safety Week. We will be taking about why it is important to follow the rules on the bus in order to be safe.
The dentist is in!
The dentists will be in on October 18th and 19th this week. If you haven't turned in your dental forms please do so as soon as possible.
PBIS Quarterly Rewards
We are going to celebrate those students that followed school expectations of being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe every quarter during our PBIS Quarterly Incentive Reward. The criteria for students to participate in the quarterly reward activity is having no school office referrals for the quarter (bus referrals do not count). We will be using the month of October to determine participation eligibility for first the quarter. Students that do not qualify will be monitored during the celebration.

Attendance Tips
1. **Establish a Consistent Routine:**
Set a regular daily schedule for your child, including a consistent wake-up time and bedtime. A structured routine helps children know what to expect and encourages them to be ready for school.
2. **Create a Comfortable Morning Environment:**
Make mornings as stress-free as possible. Ensure your child has everything they need for the school day, such as school supplies, a packed lunch, and a school bag, ready the night before.
3. **Healthy Diet and Adequate Sleep:**
Ensure your child gets a nutritious breakfast and a good night's sleep. A well-rested and well-fed child is more likely to be alert and ready for school.
4. **Communicate the Importance of Attendance:**
Talk to your child about the value of attending school regularly. Explain that attending school helps them learn, make friends, and prepare for their future.
5. **Be Attentive to Health Needs:**
If your child is unwell, it's important to communicate with the school and follow the school's sick policy. But otherwise, make every effort to send them to school, even if they're not feeling 100%.
6. **Stay Informed:**
Keep yourself informed about school events, schedules, and important dates. This can help you plan your child's attendance accordingly.
7. **Limit Unnecessary Absences:**
Try to schedule medical and other appointments outside of school hours whenever possible to minimize disruption to your child's attendance.
8. **Lead by Example:**
Demonstrate the importance of attendance by being punctual for school events and appointments, as children often model their behavior after their parents.
9. **Open Communication with Teachers:**
Establish a good line of communication with your child's teachers. If your child has concerns or is struggling academically, the teacher can help find solutions to ensure regular attendance.
10. **Motivate and Reward:**
Create positive incentives for your child to attend school, such as rewards for perfect attendance or achieving specific goals.
11. **Address Bullying or Social Issues:**
If your child is reluctant to attend school due to bullying or other social issues, work with the school to resolve the problem and provide emotional support for your child.
12. **Participate in School Activities:**
Attend school events, meetings, and parent-teacher conferences to show your child that you are involved and interested in their education.
13. **Plan Family Vacations Wisely:**
Whenever possible, schedule family vacations during school breaks to avoid interrupting your child's regular attendance.
14. **Stay Informed About School Policies:**
Familiarize yourself with the school's attendance policy and ensure you understand the procedures for notifying the school in case of an absence.
Remember that regular school attendance is essential for your child's academic success and future opportunities. By following these tips and emphasizing the importance of attendance, you can help your child establish a strong foundation for their education.
