Principal's Message
As the days are getting cooler and the leaves are changing color, there is no denying that Fall is in the air! It is hard to believe we are already six weeks into our new school year. As I walk through the school it is obvious that the students are into their routines and taking on the challenge of learning. The beginning of a school year is an exciting time and we look forward to keep this excitement moving forward.
One way to keep this feeling going as we move through the year is to keep the communication going with your child. For example, you can ask what new lessons were taught in the CKLA language arts program? Ask about what they are doing in Math? Fostering academic conversations always helps pique a child’s interest.
Also find some time to read with your child. This is a great way to share some special time together. We would encourage 15 minutes of reading a night. We look to an amazing school year at Heritage Elementary School.
We are grateful for all of your support!

School Council Nominations
The role of the school council is to meet regularly with the principal of the school and shall assist in the identification of the educational needs of students, review of the annual school budget, and in the formulation of a school improvement plan.
The School Council is made up of staff, parents and community members. We are looking for parent volunteers to be a part of our school council to undertake this endeavor. We are looking for 3-4 parents to be a part of the makeup of the council. The commitment would be approximately one meeting a month for approximately one hour.
If you are interested please fill out the attached form. If there are more than four volunteers we will hold an election through the PTO to identify our council.
What is the W.I.N. Block
The “What I Need” Instructional Block at Heritage Elementary School, commonly referred to as the “W.I.N. Block,” is used to provide students with additional learning opportunities that are at their instructional level in math and reading. The W.I.N. groups are led by classroom teachers and also by ESL teachers, Special Education teachers, Reading Teachers, Title I Teachers, and Speech and Language Pathologists.
The W.I.N. groups are fluid and are formed based on current data collected by teachers. Classroom teachers, Reading teachers, Title I Teachers, ESL teachers, Special Education teachers, and other support staff collaborate and form new groups based on current student data and interest levels.
DIBELS 8th Edition
DIBELS 8th Edition is a set of short fluency measures that can be used for universal screening, benchmark assessment, and progress monitoring. DIBELS provides us with a standard for gauging the process of all students.
Most students were tested using the DIBLES assessment. DIBELs measures the acquisition of early literacy skills. The DIBELS measures were specifically designed to assess most of the key components of reading:
- Phonemic Awareness: Hearing and using sounds in spoken words
- Phonics/Alphabetic Principle: Knowing the sounds of the letters and sounding out written words
- Fluent and Accurate Reading: Reading stories and other materials easily and quickly with few mistakes
- Vocabulary: Understanding and using a variety of words
- Comprehension: Understanding what is spoken or read
You will be receiving your child's DIBELS data in the mail sometime soon. The data will show where your child's strengths and struggles may be. The school will be providing interventions partially based on this data. The parent report also has information on what you can do with your child at home to support their learning.
If you have any questions regarding this assessment please feel free to contact the school.
