A Note from Your Principals
These tenets are foundational in empowering students in their education.
Student Voice: This means giving students the opportunity to express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas in school. It's about listening to what students have to say and valuing their input in decisions that affect their learning and school environment.
Student Choice: This refers to allowing students to make decisions about certain aspects of their education. It involves giving them options and opportunities to select topics, projects, or methods of learning that align with their interests and strengths.
Student Agency: This is about enabling students to take an active role in their learning journey. It involves giving them the tools, skills, and responsibilities to make meaningful decisions, take initiative, and have a sense of ownership over their learning experiences.
Last week, 3 of our 5th grade students demonstrated the MOST beautifully authentic example of this. When Ms. Likar picked up her students from library, Nabila, Grace, and Adriana had each picked out a book from a series on feelings (after partnering with Mrs. Aceto for recommendations) and asked, "Can we put together a lesson plan for the first graders on feelings using these books?" Of course, Ms. Likar agreed!
The girls then independently developed a lesson plan that involved reading each book aloud and facilitating an activity that coordinated with each book. Each student individually created the craft that "matched" their book. The students even made a slide deck, model examples, and asked the first grade teacher for a class roster so they could form small groups! ALL this was initiated, developed, and delivered completely independent and unprompted!
When asked what sparked this idea, the girls shared, "We wanted them to learn more about feelings and wanted to do something "special" for them." When they reflected on the implementation of their plan, they shared that it felt so good to be "busy, professional, and have so much responsibility." They also acknowledged how important (but hard!) it is to learn everyone's names and build relationships.
These students exemplify voice, choice, agency, and our South Windsor Public Schools Portrait of a Graduate! They are DEFINITELY future teachers in the making and we will be capitalizing on their desire and skills for sure in the future!
Interested in Helping Provide an AMAZING Opportunity for Our Students?
We would LOVE to partner with Girls on the Run - Greater Hartford (GOTR) to bring their after
school program to Eli Terry this spring but....we can't do it without YOU! Read on to find out how you could help.
GOTR provides fun, evidence-based programs that inspire all girls to build their confidence, kindness and decision making skills. It inspires individuals of all abilities to recognize their unique strengths, while building a sense of connection in a team setting. Volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development to enable team members to adapt to whatever comes their way. At the end of the season, the team completes a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.
In order for this program to become a reality, we need to recruit 2-3 "coaches", along with a substitute! This is a VOLUNTEER position with a commitment of 10-12 weeks. The program meets 2x a week (non-consecutive days), for 75-90 minutes each session. GOTR provides all the necessary training and you can find more information about this important role below.
If you would be interested in becoming a coach, Mrs. Hammer (jhammer@swindsor.k12.ct.us) or Mrs. Army (kathryn.army@gmail.com) would LOVE to chat and answer any questions you may have. Our goal is to solidify coaches early in the new year, so we can begin recruiting our female students in time to start the "season" at the end of February!
CCMC PJ Day for the Kids
A HUGE thank you to the Eli Terry community for your generosity in last Friday's CCMC PJ Day for the Kids fundraiser. As a school, we raised $1,080 for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The donations staff and students made will go towards new, safer, and life-saving treatments to support kids with cancer.
Every town in the state had at least one school participate. Together, statewide, we collectively raised almost $300,000!!!
Once again we are so grateful for our amazing community and your generosity!
