East Central

It's been a great start to the school year. The building project is finally in the punch-list phase with minor things still finishing, but how blessed we are to have access to facilities like these...by far, the finest in Southeast Indiana. Academics remain a priority with a quality balance of CTE and dual credit opportunities fitting every student. EC is a school...family in which we can all take great pride.

A big thank you to our Versailles Pumpkin Festival representatives Jorjia Ferguson, Stone Wilhelm, Audrey Brewington, and Tyler Brunner...and congrats to Stone on being selected King.

In Ag, our horticulture teams did us proud at Purdue's State competition with one team finishing as high as 4th in the State. Mak Kelley continues to represent EC and Indiana as a national officer for FCCLA, and we also hold three seats on the FCCLA state officer level. So proud of our student-leaders!

In athletics, it's been an amazing fall sports season. Both soccer teams have been state ranked much of the season. Neither team lost more than one contest in the regular season heading into sectionals this week. Cross county has had a phenomenal year again this fall heading into conference this weekend and sectional next weekend. Volleyball culminates their regular season this week heading into sectional next Tuesday at Franklin. Tennis shared a piece of EIAC honors and lost a tough match in the sectional championship this past Saturday. Noah Mersmann and Ian Maxwell advance to regional remaining undefeated in the season. And, football continues their historic season undefeated and ranked first in class 4A for the 9th week in a row. Lastly, girls golf finished their team season a week ago qualifying for regional and were honored with a building walk celebrating the first State qualifier, Rowan Pies, in nearly two decades! She placed 14th overall this past Saturday. We're very proud of her and of all of our fall sports teams and their successes.

Finally, we continue to celebrate East Central High School turning 50 in August and all the class of 1974! We were able to honor Terry and Linda Gellert at homecoming two weeks ago as Grand Marshals as member of the class of 1974 and generous benefactors in association with the Dearborn County Endowment offsetting costs of the senior picnic, book club, etc. this year and in the years to come. Thank you to the Gellerts!

Thank you to Senior, Lucy Chenault for the commemorative 50th design!

It is with great pride East Central announces Ji Schwieterman as Student of the Month. She

carries an impressive 4.1 GPA and is involved in National Honor Society, Exemplary Honor Roll, Senior Scholarship, Spanish Club and also Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Ji is a Student Administrative Assistant in the ECHS main office handling complex tasks for her office administration class. She has received national recognition from College Board for the rural and small town program. Ji embraces her leadership role as a Church on Fire Trailblazer as well as working on the free Farmer’s Market Outreach at church. She is the Principal Cellist of the Southeast Indiana Youth Orchestra. In her free time she enjoys playing pickleball with friends and also learning new instruments to include piano, acoustic guitar, violin and drums.

She plans to attend Hanover College to major in Biochemistry and minor in Psychology. Further she would like to earn a doctorate in Chemistry or Biochemistry and teach at the college level or become a researcher/scientist for UC Medical Center or go to medical school to become an OBGYN doctor.

She thanks her parents, Thomas and Debra Schwieterman for their endless support of her

decisions. She is also grateful to friend and mentor Cierra Withers for sparking her social and

leadership potential as well as her high school guidance counselor, Rhonda Murdock for

sustaining her with the best insight on future career paths and her continual support and

involvement. For fellow students she says, “Strive to push against the crowd of people who choose or give in to the easier route. Push past the resistance and don’t take education for granted! The recent pandemic taught me not to take the education system for granted and as a result I am even more driven to excel in years to come.”

East Central High School is excited to announce Adalyn McDonald as Student of the Month.

She is the daughter of Tom and Jodi McDonald. Adalyn is involved in National Honor Society,

Senior Scholarship and after school tutoring. She is a Student Administrative Assistant in the

main office at ECHS and works at her outside job during part of the school day as a student in

the Intensive Cooperative Education (ICE) program. Adalyn is a College Board National Merit Semi-Finalist, National Rural and Small Town Recognition recipient and will receive her Associates Degree in General Studies/Liberal Arts from Ivy Tech Community College when she graduates from East Central in June. She is a member of All Saints Parish where she volunteers at church festivals, 5K races, provides communion to residents of nursing homes and has also traveled on mission trips with the youth group.

She enjoys going to the gym, eating healthy and being active outdoors. Adalyn also says her

Catholic faith is a huge part of her life. She loves her dogs and says her family used to foster

dogs. She enjoys spending time with her very close family and hanging out with friends.

Adalyn says, “I love school, especially math.” She plans to attend Xavier University to major in

Actuarial Science and become an actuary. She is thankful for and credits her mom, Jodi

McDonald for being there for every challenge she has faced and mom is Adalyn’s #1 supporter with love and kindness.

Adalyn’s advice for classmates is to, “Manage time wisely and not wait until the last minute to do assignments; work ahead, be on top of due dates and do not procrastinate!”

NEW Parent & Family Hub - Indiana Learning Lab
The Indiana Department of Education launched a new feature in the Indiana Learning Lab: The Parent & Family Support Hub! The Indiana Learning Lab, first launched in 2021 to support our educators, has now grown to more than 44,000 users. As student and educator needs evolve, the Learning Lab is evolving as well. The new Parent and Family Hub was launched as a way to support parents and families of students in early learning through grade 12. The platform will feature vetted websites, videos, workshops, and other content focused on literacy and STEM instruction, in particular.

Class of 2023 & Beyond - Graduation Pathways

Students no longer have to “pass a test” to earn their high school diploma! Students will now complete what is known as “Graduation Pathways” to graduate high school in the state of Indiana. Seniors: ECHS will be holding our Financial Aid Night on October 18th from 6:30- 8:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center. We will have our representative from INvested who will do an overview on how to complete the parent and student sections of the FAFSA for the class of 2024. We highly encourage all parents and seniors to attend. If you can not attend the presentation, it will be live streamed on trojanmediaproductions.com and available to view at a later date if needed.

Seniors are also allowed to have two college visit days to explore or finalize colleges of choice. Fall break also serves as a great opportunity to visit colleges that are still in session without missing classes at ECHS. Several college representatives have met with seniors who have voiced interest and more are scheduled to arrive.

Seniors who are undecided about what to study after high school are encouraged to connect with Ivy Tech Community College’s Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP). This program helps high school graduates earn an associate degree in just 11 months and prepares them to transfer to a four-year college to earn their bachelor's degree. Juniors: The PSAT (10/25) digital test will be available to the Juniors during the school day. The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT and a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship.

SAT School Day: The Digital SAT is a required test for all Juniors in the state of Indiana. The SAT will be given during the school day on March 5th. This test is free and used by the state for school accountability. The benefit of the test is that students will be able to use this score report for college applications. More information will be provided as the March date approaches.

Sophomore and Freshman: These students should focus on their grades to build a strong transcript which will enable the most opportunities for them. Sophomores will take the digital PSAT on October 25th during the school year.

Attention Dual Credit Students

If you are enrolled in a Dual Credit course, you must register and meet any Knowledge Assessment (KA) requirements by September 13. September is almost here, so it's crunch time if you have not started. It takes several days to complete all the steps, so there's no way to begin on the 13th. Login to Dual Enroll to check your status. If you need a higher KA score, get back in there and take the relevant mini-tests until you reach the goal!

Ivy Tech College Connection Coach

For students working on achieving the Indiana College Core and needing to pick up courses, Ivy Tech has multiple eight-week sessions throughout the school year. These are online, virtual, in-person, or blended classes; students choose whatever works best. As an East Central High School student, there is potentially a full scholarship for these courses, and books are potentially free.

Save Time, Save Money, Get a Degree

The Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) is an 11-month program, which is student focused and designed to support, encourage, and mentor students throughout their first year of college. This program is great for students who prefer smaller class sizes and who prefer to be on a first name basis with their professors. ASAP works with students to build confidence before transferring to a 4-year university to get their bachelor’s degree or going into the workforce. Applications are now being accepted for the next cohort. Agricultural Structures, Fabrication & Design Students Build Potting Benches

Students in Mr. Johnson’s Period 6 Agricultural Structures, Fabrication and Design students are building 12 gardener’s potting benches to sell to the general public. Students are gaining valuable experience in mass producing a quality built product on a large scale. Profits made from the project will be used to purchase additional materials for student projects and to purchase additional new tools for the program. Students will also be constructing workbenches and picnic tables during the remainder of semester one.

EC FFA Soils Evaluation Teams Compete

13 members of the East Central FFA Chapter competed in the Area 1 Soils Evaluation Career Development Event on Thursday September 28th on Saint Peter’s Road in Franklin County. Thirteen teams from southeastern Indiana participated in the event. Teams had to use knowledge of soils to evaluate the physical characteristics of a total of four sites. Two sites were evaluated on their agricultural capabilities and the other two were evaluated on their ability to be used as a site for residential home.

East Central’s senior level high school team placed 9th. Team members included Isabelle Leurck, Kody Schilling, Jasmin Keith and Shelby Dawson. Savannah Weber competed as an individual.

East Central’s top middle school team placed 2nd. Team members included Brianna Inman, Lane Stevens and Ashton Bruns. Other middle school members competing included Noah Lewis, Chase Leurck and Evan Burdette .

Prep for College and Careers

Mrs. Hutzel’s students in Prep for College and Careers(PCC) have been working hard these first 9 weeks learning all about themselves. Students can now analyze personal traits, interests, attitudes and skills. They set personal and work short- and long-term goals. They also can assess personal, family and community standards, values and ethics.

Specifically, the past 2 weeks students have been learning how to utilize the Decision Making Process while making thoughtful decisions. Below you can see students working collaboratively on a Survival Simulation Game that is used in Reconnaissance School training in the U.S. Army.

Trojan Exchange

Who we are: We are a group of students at East Central High School working towards building school spirit through merchandise, events, and more. Our 2023-2024 officers are: CEO- Amaya Williamson, CFO- Tyler Morris, CTO- Alex Seubert, CMO- Olivia Turner, COO- Isabel O’harra.

What we do: Trojan Exchange is a group of students studying business. There are quite a few different positions that each person can be in. It is broken down into four categories, each category has its own manager and its own officer. The four categories consist of Operations, Technology, Finance, and Marketing.

Where we are located: We are based out of the Trojan Exchange store in East Central High School. We use our store cart to come to all of the home football games, and sometimes other sports games. The Trojan Exchange also holds events around the school.

Our why: The Trojan Exchange was formed to help teach students how to run a business using hands-on experience. Our goal is to raise money for senior scholarships, and help them excel in their careers in the future.Every purchase you make or every event you support goes towards helping us reach that goal! Throughout the past month in my engineering classes, the students have been carrying out a

number of different types of projects/assignments. My Introduction to Engineering and Design classes have been working on making multiple 3D parts on Autodesk Inventor. Right now we have been focusing on learning how to create parts given a variety of working drawings. Some of the parts are pretty tough and have really been making the students think. Later in the year we will have a lot of different projects that will require the students to really know how to use Inventor, to not only make parts but working drawings for those parts as well.

My Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last few weeks learning about different house styles. The students had to create a 3D model of the house style of their choice that showed off the most prominent features of that house style. They got to experience the “old school” way of house modeling, and I think they did a great job. In the upcoming weeks, we will be working with the Revit 2024 software, and the students will learn how to model houses on the computer.

My Computer-aided-Design class has been working with AutoCAD 2024 software. They have

been creating multiple drawings of parts as well as creating technical drawings on the software. The students have done a great job of picking up on how to use the software and have really impressed me with what they have been able to accomplish this quarter. In the upcoming weeks we will be working with Pivot Animation to create stick figure animations/videos. I cannot wait to see what they are going to come up with. Then we will be turning our attention to Autodesk Inventor, and we have multiple projects lined up.

Throughout the last month, the Aerospace Engineering class has been working with multiple lift and drag calculations, as well as carrying out airfoil simulations. The class was also able to create a model of an airfoil on Inventor and then 3D print them. Recently, the class has been working with Aery 32 software to create multiple glider designs that meet certain requirements.

Then they were asked to design and build a glider that they think will be able to fly as long as

possible. Most of the class is still working on finishing up their gliders but one of my students is already finished and his glider is pictured below.

Braylon Carpenter and Blake Wells from Mr. Kennedy’s Introduction to Transportation Class was challenged to create a Self-Propelled Vehicle to go as far as possible. These two gentlemen created a mousetrap car that went a distance of 67’ 4”. They had some difficult competition but they emerged victorious.

Mr. Meiners’ English 10 students completed their 12 Angry Men unit. Along with discussing theme and argument, the class learned the different courtroom roles and participated in a mock trial. Next, they will move into reading Julius Caesar.

In English 9, Ms. Huber’s students are reading John Steinbeck's Of Mice & Men. Students have been learning about the different elements of a story (plot structure, theme, setting, characters, and conflict) and using this knowledge as they read Of Mice & Men.

Freshmen in Mrs. Stanley's English 9 students are learning about the three types of irony in class as they navigate their way through the Short Story Unit. Juniors in Mrs. Stanley's class are wrapping up The Crucible while learning how mass hysteria, superstition, and greed fueled the plot of the play and the Salem Witch Trials.

In Dr. Rose-Ronnebaum’s English classes, juniors are finishing the Salem Witchcraft Trials and gearing up for a poetry research project to finish the semester, and freshmen are working on writing their own version of "The Gift of the Magi" by O'Henry in a five-paragraph essay. Group work and peer editing allowed students a chance to collaborate on ideas.

Mrs. Gooodpaster’s seniors are covering the adventures of knights and preparing to discuss changes in language through time, and her sophomores are reading Julius Caesar while analyzing evidence.

The students in Ms. Jackson’s Ivy Tech English 111 are exploring elements of Romanticism in preparation for the next book they will read in class, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.

Mrs. Ketcham’s Honors English 12 students have left the Anglo-Saxon era after finishing Beowulf and are jumping right into the middle ages as they learn about Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Mrs. Ketcham’s AP Literature students have completed their first time writing and are discussing and analyzing Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Introduction to Fashion and Textiles- The Introduction to Fashion and Textiles Students are currently working on threading the sewing machine and bobbin. They just finished sewing a ⅝” seam straight, while making hair scrunchies. They are currently working on learning how to sew curved seams while making fabric pumpkins for fall.

Advanced Child Development-The Advanced Child Development students are currently studying prenatal development. Students have also researched both genetic and environmental factors that affect an unborn baby. They are also learning how to embroider.

Advanced Fashion & Textiles-The Advanced Fashion and Textiles Students are completing a sustainability project where they repurposed denim into cosmetic bags.

The Education Profession 1-These students are enjoying getting to know the students in the class they assist. They completed writing their “philosophy of education.”

FCCLA

The East Central FCCLA helped on Saturday, September 15th with the FCN Bank of Sunman’s Shredding event to help combat identity theft. They also had their annual car wash/bake sale at Alig’s Shell to raise money for the membership dues for the entire program. FCCLA also held their annual Eat Dinner with Your Family Night on September 19th. There were over 175 people attending. The Culinary Arts/Prostart Class prepared a delicious meal of Trojan Lasagna, Green Beans, Tossed Salad, Breadsticks, and Homemade cake. Everyone enjoyed the event.

Mak Kelley and Alexandra Seubert presented at the Indiana Association of Career and Technical Education Conference on September 22nd about the FCCLA Program to current and future teachers.

The East Central FCCLA chapter also participated in the homecoming parade.

On September 26 and 27th, several members of the East Central FCCLA assisted at the Dearborn County 4-H/Ag Days at the Dearborn County Fairgrounds where they taught 3rd graders throughout the county about nutrition. Thank you to Kellyn Burke, Naomi Dickerson, Kara Rowland and Katie Baeir for assisting with this event.

On September 28th, the East Central FCCLA participated in the Indiana FCCLA Fall Rally in Danville, Indiana.

The conference was led by Indiana FCCLA State Officers, including 3 state officers from East Central Jocelyn Inderhees, Alexandra Seubert and Maleighna Mondal. At the conference, members were able to learn more about FCCLA, participate in Career Pathway presentations and some members even participated in FCS

The Guilford Covered Bridge has seen many people cross over it. On September 16 it was the site of a dinner raising money for the JCAP (Jail Chemical Addiction Program). A Community Bridge, a non-profit organization, is hosting “A Bridge to A New Beginning” from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. It is a private invitation for dinner where the proceeds will go to JCAP which serves men and women who are struggling with addiction issues. Another highlight of the event is a select group of ECHS art students from the painting, drawing, and photography classes of the 2022-2023 school year displayed their artwork of their rendition of a Dearborn county bridge or a bridge from the Cincinnati area. Students were responsible to research their bridge they were assigned to. 8 of the 22 art projects were auctioned off to raise money for JCAP. The remaining 14 art projects were auctioned off in a silent auction. This collection of ECHS artwork of the bridges will then go on a tour for an art exhibit to the Dillsboro Art Center, The Framery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and the Lawrenceburg Public Library. The students that participated were Abby Lyon, Kelsey Wegeman, Carly Richardson, Josilyn Willwerth, Hayden Geiger, Alyssa Good, Leah Kubitz, Olivia Smith, Alecia Prues, Jaclyn Schneider, Megan Keene, Michael Batta, Zoey Boggs, Brooke Hughes, Abigail Sebastian, Emily McMann, Zoey Parr, and Jenna Luken. Last spring of the 2022-2023 school year, some of our very talented ECHS art students submitted their artwork to a national competition hosted by Dick Blick Art Supplies called “Celebration of Art”. Over 20,ooo entries were submitted and the top 3 percent of students’ artwork was selected to be published into a book. ECHS had 4 high merit award winners that were in the top 3% where their artwork was published in a book celebrating top student artists from all over the country! . ECHS Art Department received one book that costs $40 to purchase and the art department received $200 in supplies to be purchased by Dick Blick Art Supplies. Our Calculus 1 students are working hard learning about derivatives. They are working on understanding the concept of a derivative geometrically, numerically, and analytically. They are interpreting the derivative as a rate of change and beginning to master finding derivatives of all types of functions. This week we worked on graphing a derivative of a function given the graph of the function, while discovering where derivatives fail to exist. Our Calculus 2 students are reviewing applications of integrals. Today, they presented problems and their solutions to their peers.

Piano classes are learning how to play duets this year. They are having a great time and learning how to perform with other students.

Fall has arrived and with it some cooler temps. PE classes will continue to enjoy the outdoor sports, but will begin spending more time inside. Softball, cardio (Just Dance), weight lifting, speed and agility, and soccer are just a few of the ongoing activities students have been enjoying.

Mr. Hendrick’s Introduction to Athletic Training class has been getting some hands-on experience with splinting. We have some ambitious learners!

Chemistry I is continuing Unit 1. We have looked at different ways to notate electrons in the 3-D model of the atom using electron configuration, orbital notation, and noble gas notation with a focus on valence electrons to prepare students for the foundations needed for bonding and molecular geometry. We have also looked at other periodic trends as we have focused on learning about the periodic table and the information hidden among the boxes. Next, we will learn about stable ions and take a closer look at some nuclear chemistry.

Chemistry II is finishing up molar conversions, electron configurations and analyzing periodic trends with relation to Coulomb's Law. After fall break, we will be focusing on chemical reactions and naming rules.

AP Chemistry is finishing up analyzing forces between different particles. Students examined chemical structures and compared boiling points and rates of evaporation with the relative strength of intermolecular forces between molecules. We will take a look at gases and solutions when returning from fall break.

Physics having completed velocity and uniform acceleration units, we are looking at vector addition and rounding out the prerequisites for our projectile motion unit coming after fall break. Our kinematics material will be rounded out and reviewed with a uniform acceleration lab using our motion detectors in conjunction with graphing calculators.

Integrated Chemistry and Physics having completed our unit on Newton's Laws we are currently applying them to Forces and Work as we round out the 1st quarter.

Biology I students are analyzing parts of both plant and animal cells and correlating their biochemical structure with the function of the organelle.

In Mr. Lewis' ACP Intro into American Politics class, the students are completing Unit 2 Test which includes questions over the Constitution, civil liberties, and civil rights. In Sociology, the class is discussing the documentary "The Social Dilemma" to examine how behavior has changed since the mass use of social media.

In Mr. Owen's American History class, we just finished our examination of the American Revolution and ended the unit with a Primary Source Document based exam. We will start on the early Federal Republic and the first wave of the Industrial Revolution when we return from break. Ask your student how these two men helped shape the concept of political parties, and how they differed on the topic of basic "human nature":

In European History we just completed our study of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations and the first wave of the Scientific Revolution. We will start with the English Civil War when we return. Ask your student how this man changed the way the world thought about the topic of "Science", and how his work opened up a new system of understanding the role of humans in the natural world.

In economics, classes have begun their exploration into investing by starting the Indiana Stock Market Program competition. This competition involves high schools from all across the state of Indiana as they compete against each other to see who can increase their profits the most, through investing, over a ten-week period. Top-performing groups can receive prize money for their efforts from Purdue University.

Internship program

Did you know some East Central students participate in an internship program? As part of their preparation for entering the workforce after graduation these students work during the school day under the supervision of school staff to learn new skills and independence in the workplace. We currently have East Central students interning at Skyline Chili, BP, and Harrison Trail Health Campus. We are excited to announce we are currently developing a partnership with the Ars Cafe & Meeting House.

Fall Sports Highlights:

*Rowan Pies (soph.) recently qualified for girls golf state championships which makes her the first girl in 25+ years to make it to that level. In the 36-hole event on Friday, Sept. 29th and Saturday, Sept. 30th, Rowan shot a combined (+9) to finish T-14th place overall (out of 108 golfers). The team finished 3rd in the EIAC and advanced to Regional for the 2nd year in a row.

*Football continues to show why they are the #1 ranked team in 4A football. Currently, they are (7-0) on the season while scoring 47ppg (6th in the state) and only giving up an average of 6ppg to the opponent (4th in the state). Two more weeks before Sectional begins in the quest to repeat as State Champions.

*Girls Soccer completed a wonderful regular season (ranked inside the top-10 most of the year) by finishing 15-1-1 on the year. They begin their Sectional Championship quest this week. Seniors Lexi Watkins and Olivia Hopper (both Division 1 college signees) have led the charge. Both will finish their illustrious careers atop the leaderboard categories in multiple Program historical statistical categories.

*Boys Soccer finished up their season (14-1-1), won multiple invites, went undefeated in EIAC to win conference (21 matches in a row), and now look to repeat as Sectional champs!

*Boys and Girls Cross Country are getting ready to head into postseason play after this week's EIAC Meet. The girls team has won multiple invites and both teams have shown tremendous growth during the season. Sophomore Callie Bentley has spearheaded the charge by breaking her own school record (18:28.1).

*Boys Tennis finished their season with an 18-4 record. While they fell as a team to Batesville in the Sectional, Seniors Noah Mersmann and Ian Maxwell won the #1 Doubles bracket to advance to Regional. They are currently undefeated this season (23-0) and will play at Col. North this week.

*Girl Volleyball is currently in the thick of trying to win an EIAC title with an important match on Thursday vs. G'Burg. The young Varsity group has shown great improvement from earlier this fall and aim to compete in next week's Sectional 14 at Franklin Community.

*EC Athletics recently visited the (3) Elementary schools to celebrate school spirit leading up to the youth night.
