CTE Pathway Focus: Computer Science
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway Highlight: COMPUTER SCIENCE
Maybe you have always liked to solve problems or decipher codes. Perhaps you have a knack for learning new languages, or maybe you were so intrigued with your computer that you ripped off the cover and started to tinker with the inner workings. If so, computer science might be an ideal career choice for you.
Computer science majors need to be able to think analytically in order to devise systems and programs, but must also be sufficiently detail-oriented to troubleshoot problems. They must be able to communicate well with non-technical people to assess their needs and convey technical information in plain language.
Creativity is essential for those computer science majors who hope to come up with the latest app or technology gadget. Given the rapid rate of change within technology, computer science majors need to have a thirst for learning to keep up with the latest developments.
Computer science majors must also be curious about the world around them, since programs and systems apply to every possible area of life and commerce.
Given the pervasiveness of computer technology in today's society, there are many different job options open to the computer science major. The right job for you will depend on your personal skills, values, and interests.
- Software Developer
- Database Administrator
- Computer Hardware Engineer
- Computer Systems Analyst

St. Mary's University Computer Science
One of the most innovative and essential fields of study, computer science has been, is, and will continue to be responsible for most of our technological world.
Computer scientists are the ones who write the software that runs on the computers found everywhere in modern life, from military to medical, communications to transportation, and manufacturing to entertainment. They find software solutions to address issues for companies and the world.
The Computer Science student at St. Mary’s studies programming languages, operating systems, algorithms, databases, computer architecture, computer networks, computer security and software engineering.
Northwest Vista College Computer Science
This program prepares students for entry-level positions as software developers. The program instills students with fundamental concepts and provides them with hands-on experience developing software applications. The student will be able to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the computer industry.
This major also provides a foundation for transfer into a 4-year computer science program. The program includes courses from the field of study curriculum for computer science that has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

What is an Early Action application?
Early Decision versus Early Action
Early decision plans are binding — a student who is accepted as an ED applicant must attend the college. Early action plans are nonbinding — students receive an early response to their application but do not have to commit to the college until the normal reply date of May 1. Counselors need to make sure that students understand this key distinction between the two plans.
Approximately 450 colleges have early decision or early action plans, and some have both. Some colleges offer a nonbinding option called single-choice early action, under which applicants may not apply ED or EA to any other college.
ED plans have come under fire as unfair to students from families with low incomes, since they do not have the opportunity to compare financial aid offers. This may give an unfair advantage to applicants from families who have more financial resources.
EA applicants
- Apply early.
- Receive an admission decision early in the admission cycle (usually in January or February).
- Consider acceptance offer; do not have to commit upon receipt.
- Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans.
- Give the college a decision no later than the May 1 national response date.
