Web 3.0 and Social Media
NYSAIS 2014 - Teaching With Technology
Mercer Hall and Patricia Russac
The tools of Web 3.0 involve real-time virtual worlds and intelligent personal agents, along a spectrum of learning interactions from social media to collaborative documents. Rather than relying on pushed or shared content, the current learning model is live and mobile. Classrooms that incorporate Twitter, Padlet, apps, and flipped learning also need to embrace avatars, Tellagami, and digital privacy. Interactive, social Web 3.0 resources demand proactive ways to access tech tools and still preserve learners’ anonymity.
Other important takeaways in the session will be the latest in scholarly research about modern Internet safety. The presenters will share infographics, videos, and web links to inform educators and students. For links to other resources, please visit "Smore On Web 3.0 and Social Media" on The ASIDE Blog.

Avatars
Bitstrips
Bitstrips focuses more on the nuances of the face than other avatars. The comics-friendly site uses cartoony animation to offer a host of choices.
DoppelMe
DoppelMe offers an impressive range of colors, with upbeat and kid-friendly characters. The accessories and backgrounds provide cute choices for boys and girls.
Dream Avatar
For slightly older students, Dream Avatar is surprisingly sophisticated in its spectrum of creative elements.
Square Face Icon
Square Face Icon is perfect for younger students. It has a simple, user friendly interface with enough selections for personal choice.
Reasonably Clever
Reasonably Clever is a terrific option for young learners. The web page and graphic interaction are not nearly as crisp and modern as other sites, but the end products are good for projects and class blogs.
Dude Factory
Dude Factory has clever options for designing a personalized avatar, but it is geared for older students.
BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF
BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF combines essential avatar choices with outlandish animal features to generate half-human, half-beast images.
Picasso Head
Picasso Head is a more sophisticated avatar generator. It's artsy approach would work well with middle schoolers.
Voki
Voki has a host of different characters to choose from to create avatars, complete with a multitude of voices.

The American Society For Innovation Design In Education
Integrating the design of information into the daily conversation is no different from integrating technology into the classroom. Design is not just an aesthetic but instead is a process of taking a concept from its formative state to its final outcome. Thinking like a designer can transform the way children learn.
