Key News for explorer families
Happiest New Year to all Northwood Families! It’s been wonderful seeing the students back, it hasn’t taken them long at all to get back into the routines.
Getting back into the swing of things after a holiday break can be tough for families, especially with the early wake-up time. The routines, rules, and procedures that were once so familiar are now a vague memory, and it may take some effort to get back into rhythm with them.
* Be Respectful * Be Responsible * Be Engaged * Here at school our teachers are re-teaching classroom procedures to help students readjust to their class routine. They are reviewing our PBIS procedures and teaching classroom expectations. Taking this time to reestablish expectations and routines helps anchor students as they learn and grow. Reviewing rules, procedures and expectations conveys the value of these positive behaviors.
As you’re filling in your January calendars remember that Monday, January 16th, the school will be closed in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday. Tuesday, January 17th, will be a remote day for students. Our teachers will be participating in a full day of professional learning that day.
There is no hiding from the excitement of the big football game Monday evening. If you are a Georgia Bulldogs fan or would like to support them, have the kids wear team gear or red and black on Monday.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
ESOL Explorers
Our ESOL students have had a great 1st semester making new friends, learning new vocabulary, practicing phonics, and reading both fiction and nonfiction texts. We are so proud of ALL of our multilingual students as they acquire more and more English and grow as learners.
As we begin the 2nd semester, our ESOL students will be preparing to take the yearly ESOL Assessment called the ACCESS. The ACCESS test consists of four various domains: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For grades 1-5, each section will be administered on a different day. For Kindergarten, the ACCESS test is given to each student individually and covers all 4 domains. The ACCESS will determine ESOL placement for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you for your continued support!

Clinic Needs and News
Clothing Donations
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.24-Hour Rule
As several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 are going around, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.

MISSING SOMETHING?
Parents, please encourage your students to check regularly for lost items in the Lost and Found. Please mark all student belongings clearly with the child’s name so that it can be identified. Unclaimed items are donated to local charities after the last school day of every month. January’s date is Monday, January 30th.
