TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 14
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Break. Over the next few weeks, students will be taking the required state assessments. These assessments provide us with valuable data and are used to measure the growth of students, classes, grades, and the school as an entity.
Some students will do really well, some students will not. We have a culture at OSES that rewards effort, and that at end of the day is what matters most. If you try your best, prepare accordingly, and work hard, you will be successful. Success is not always measure by a “5” or an “A.”
Please encourage your student to try their best. We will do the same, and together, provide the support needed for them to be successful.

Are you frustrated by the length of our carline? We understand! Here are three tips to help reduce the wait time during morning and afternoon carlines.
#1 – Please move your car forward. We constantly remind you to do this because many cars leave unnecessary gaps between themselves and the vehicle in front of them. By eliminating these spaces, we can fit more cars into the carline and make it move faster. It's a simple concept, really. Unfortunately, we've encountered situations where parents refuse to move because their child is still working on homework or eating breakfast, or they simply don't want their child to walk a few extra feet. Others are distracted by their phones or electronic devices and only start paying attention after we've shouted multiple times. These are just a few examples of the challenges we face on a daily basis.
#2 – Especially in the mornings, please ensure your child is prepared to exit the car. They should have their belongings ready and be able to leave the car as soon as they reach the back of the building. Instead of having to open the trunk and gather their things, they could have their bags and lunch on their laps beforehand. Carpooling parents should wait until they reach the very front of the line before stopping to load up, making it easier for other cars to move around them.
#3 – Arriving too early to pick up your children from the club does not expedite the line. In fact, it has the opposite effect. Some parents claim their children do not have club activities, when in fact they do, which holds up the line for parents whose children are ready to be picked up. As parents with children in club wait, the line either moves very slowly or not at all. We have asked parents to enter the line at 3:40, the designated end time for clubs. Coming before this time blocks the entrance for parents picking up early. Additionally, parking and waiting in a line too early does not help move the line along. We understand that time can be tricky, but the slight inconvenience of looping back around is much better than bringing the line to a complete halt.
Curriculum and Testing Updates
Next week students in grades K-2 will participate in FAST (Star) Reading PM 2; your student’s teacher will let you know the exact date. Please make sure you are registered for the emailed results through Renaissance (directions were in the email on 11/6). Students in grades 3-5 will take FAST Reading on Tuesday (12/5) and FAST Math on Thursday (12/7). Please make sure students arrive at school no later than 8:00 am. Student scores will be available through the FDOE Family Portal; you will use the same login information from PM 1.
Grade 6 students will participate in FAST Reading and Math the week of December 11th.
All makeup testing will begin after the break on January 9th.
Contact Ms. Carter (Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.

KINDERGARTEN
Lamour
This was a great first week back from our Thanksgiving break! Our students are continuing to work hard with the UFLI curriculum as they practice their handwriting and reading. In Science, we are learning to sort objects in different ways. Our students enjoyed working together to find similar characteristics in objects. We have also introduced our Science Fair project and practiced writing our question and hypothesis. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings.
FIRST
Vancol
In Science, the First Grade is learning about Earth's surface. Mrs. Vancol's class made a model of the layers of the earth with play-doh, learned about the rock cycle by melting crayons, and made rain in a cup to illustrate the precipitation part of the water cycle. Next week, the students will be examining soil under a microscope and making their own fossils!
Dec. 15: Field Trip to Gatorland!

SECOND
The 2nd graders team went to the Fieldtrip in Orlando Family Theater. We watched " Junie B Jones, Jingle Bells, Batman Smells. Students enjoyed the show and relate the scenarios in the real classroom setting. The play shows some funny moments that the students and teachers experience in the classroom daily. We look forward to more field trips to come. Thank you, parents, for your support!
THIRD
Patel
Throughout the week, Ms.Patel’s class went into the world of poetry, analyzing the different components of a poem. In science we began learning vertebrates and their classifications, adding depth to our understanding. In math we continued working on the Topic 7, preparing for an upcoming Topic of fractions. Overall, it has been a week marked by diverse and enriching learning experiences.
FOURTH
Blaske
In science the students have been working on forces and motion. They created catapults, balloon rockets, and courses that changed direction at least three times. Next week the students will start on energy. I can't wait to see how creative their energy robots will be! In math the students are completing their unit on division.
FIFTH
Leighvard
Hi Amazing parents and colleagues. Here is an update on our academic activities so far; We have just completed unit 6 mathematics on dividing decimals and whole numbers. Students were certainly stretched on this unit but at last we can see some progress on their posttest. There is forever, more room for improvements but we should also acknowledge students’ persistency, and commitment to improve their math skills.
In science we are now working on forms of energy, and their categories as either potential or kinetic energy. We’ll continue this unit through all of December.
Next Tuesday, students will take the FAST assessment to monitor progress. Parents, please be mindful of the due date for payment to the Marine park at Ponce Inlet and the Disney Field trip to the Animal Kingdom. This is due December 15, and payment is through school pay.
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend
Mr. Leighvard

Happy December! Our Character Trait of the Month for December is Empathy and Acceptance. Everyone has a different experience during these busy holiday months, and it is important for us to accept and empathize with different people and their viewpoints.
EMPATHY IS ...
Seeing with the eyes of another
Listening with the ears of another
Feeling with the heart of another
In order to show empathy we need to be able to understand what others are feeling or going through.
You never really understand another human being until you see things from their point of view and that may take :
remaining calm in a stressful situation. .. acting calm even if you don't feel that way
slowing your thought process down ...counting to ten ... breathing deeply
understanding ... think about if this were my brother or sister or someone else i love how might they feel
taking a walk to remain calm
Be the reason someone smiles today ... show compassion!
