School Site Council is an important part of our school operations. It is a state-mandated process for planning how to use our funds and monitoring our progress. Our team consists of two students, four teachers, four parents, a classified staff member, and myself. We held our fourth and final meeting of the year receiving our budget and following up with our efforts this year to move forward as a school, especially coming off the pandemic experience. I appreciated the questions, input, and discussion generated by going through some of our documents and data. Listening to the voices of varied stakeholders is something we value and need in order to be our best.
The baseball team played a home game against a formidable foe and showed how they are working to become their very best. Riley Kelly not only pitched but hit a long home run to left field. It was impressive to see all our boys focused on the goal. They have a solid record of 6 and 2, and look to improve on that Saturday.
Another reminder of our talented and hard-working students here at Tustin High School came on Tuesday night when Chris Espino received a scholarship from the Santa Ana Elks Club. It was a nice evening of celebrating some students in the Santa Ana and Tustin area. Chris represented us well.
Rotary Club was another service club honoring Tillers this week. This time it was teachers at a lunch on Thursday. Max Maldonado, Andrea Willoughby-Jones, and Stephanie Carey received a grant for a good idea to implement. Mr. Maldonado’s idea revolved around using his photography room to teach some basics of photo-mechanics and Ms. Willoughby-Jones and Ms. Carey were looking for a way to purchase books for their Tiller Buddies connection. We honor so many students, and rightfully so, and it was good to see teachers celebrated as well.
Thursday afternoon, we hosted our first track meet of the season. This is a unique sport because like swimming, it is basically an individual sport. There is a team aspect to it, but it is more about supporting one another so individuals can do their best. We had some good performances by our Tillers. Track, like baseball, is also a signal that Spring is here and summer is around the corner.
One of my favorite aspects of the track meet was watching several of our soccer girls perform on the track. In this day and age of specialization, it is increasingly rare to see athletes venture out and try other sports. To the credit of the girls’ soccer coach, she encouraged her athletes to try another sport. In fact, she was out there with her sign, cheering them on. I was not surprised to see a couple of them winning races after watching them run up and down the soccer field. I appreciate the culture our coaches create where our students are not seen as commodities to be horded, but people to be shared and celebrated. We all win when a Tiller competes, performs, or leads!
