A message from the principal
Happy October!
At Dayton Elementary, we believe strongly in the importance of home and school connections. We are looking forward to the opportunity to meet with all families during conferences this month. If you haven’t signed up yet, please review the information below.
During the month of October, our school is learning about Responsibility. Character Strong defines responsibility as “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.”
Families can learn more about how to support conversations at home with these resources:
Kindergarten Family Connection
On Friday, we are hosting our first Eagle Huddle, or all school celebration. Ask your student about what ways we celebrated our uniquely special students and staff.
We have much to celebrate at Dayton. Our students are kind, hard working and invested in helping us create a school that is safe and welcoming to all. Thank you for the role you play in helping us achieve this.
-Mrs. Wippler
Safe Routes to School
Anoka Hennepin School District has been awarded planning assistance from the MN Department Transportation to create a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Plan for Dayton Elementary. The plan will be developed throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Minnesota Safe Routes to School is a statewide effort to make it safe, convenient and fun for all youth to walk, bike and roll to school and in daily life. Once complete, the plan will provide direction and recommendations for improving walking and biking for our students.
We need you-
Students and families will be asked for feedback this school year at in-person events, in classrooms and using an online survey and online map. Go to the project webpage to get the latest information and contact the SRTS project team.

October Specialists Highlights
Art
Project Highlight: Second Grade Wild Things
This trimester, Second graders are exploring how to use the element of art texture in their work. Some essential questions they are considering include: How do we come into contact with texture in daily life? How can I use different tools, materials, and techniques in order to create texture in my art? Using crayons, paint sticks, and collage objects, students created a textured creature inspired by the book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
Core
In Core, we have been busy learning about our school technology. We reviewed how to care for our chromebooks and iPads. Kindergarten students have learned how to sign into their Wonders app and learned about a few other learning apps. First graders have been practicing logging into their chromebooks (thank you 5th grade helpers for supporting this!). Second graders have been learning how to navigate the different learning applications on their chromebooks. Third grade students have been introduced to our keyboarding program, Typing Club. Finally, 4th and 5th graders had fun with a chromebook scavenger hunt!
Explorations
Great News for our Scientists at Dayton Elementary! Our district is implementing a brand new science curriculum this year called twigScience! The curriculum is inquiry based which means that students will be doing a lot of hands-on exploring! Kindergarten and First Graders are beginning with the exploration of plants and what they need. Second graders will be learning about mixing colors through the use of light. Third Graders have started their learning with a Pet Problem that needs to be solved while focusing on how scientists and engineers work together to solve problems. Fourth Graders are focusing on Social Studies this year and are beginning with the Three Branches of the United States Government. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning, curiosity and exploring! -Mrs.Kalil
Library
In the library, we have been busy learning about our school district’s Acceptable Use Policy. This helps our students understand how they can use technology safely and responsibly at school. We have also learned about how we can take care of our library books so that they don’t get lost or damaged. This week, our Kindergarten students will get to check out their first library book! When they return it to school, they will get to choose two new ones to bring home! And…look for the book fair coming to Dayton during conferences! The Scholastic Book Fair will be open during conference nights only (Oct. 9th, 10th and 12th) from 4:15-7:45pm. We look forward to seeing your family there and celebrating the joy of reading!
Music
In music class we are learning about pitch, rhythm and form in music. All grade levels learn this through: listening, singing, reading and writing music, playing instruments, creating music and moving to the music. We are also learning how to be a Dayton Student with kindness, safety and responsibility!
PhyEd
Please remember to send appropriate shoes for PE. Thank you!
We are working on building relationships through team building activities and sportsmanship. Trimester one concentration is on cardiovascular fitness. This would include running challenges, tag, soccer skills, etc.

Bus app: FirstView bus app
Anoka-Hennepin families have access to their students’ bus routes through the FirstView bus app. The app monitors regular school bus routes in real-time. And, it’s free for parents/guardians and students.
While Anoka-Hennepin buses have an excellent on-time performance record, inclement weather, traffic delays, and driver shortages may impact routes. The FirstView bus app provides bus arrival times, anticipated length of any delay, an estimated arrival time and if a substitute bus is being used on the route. Email, push and/or text notifications can inform families of such information instantly.
Go to ahschools.us/busapp to learn more or download FirstView from the Apple or Android app stores.
