November- a time for GRATITUDE

Our Kindness Crew has chosen to focus on GRATITUDE for the month of November and we have so much to be thankful for at Valerius.

Valerius is home to 292 students, 23 teachers, 11 associates, 2 custodians, 1 FFO, 1 school nurse, 1 school counselor, 1 instructional coach, and 1 secretary who make our building the most amazing place to be. Every day I have so many things to celebrate!

We are supported by our incredible PTO and families. We are thankful for your time and commitment to students and staff. We appreciate the partnerships, friendships, and teamwork that we have with all of you.

Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)

For the first time, last Spring our current 4th and 5th graders participated in the Iowa Statewide

Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP). The State of Iowa replaced the Iowa Assessments with this new assessment that measures student progress towards meeting grade level Iowa Common Core Standards in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. The results of this assessment are expected to released and shared with families sometimes after November 11th.

FUN FACT- HOW VALERIUS GOT ITS NAME

Two weeks ago my in-laws came to Valerius and toured the school. My father-in-law asked why the name Valerius. At the time I didn't know the answer. After some searching I learned in 1963 Valerius Elementary was named for Litta and Ellen Valerius. Ellen Valerius served on the school board, and her family were landowners and operated the Laddvale Dairy. Their home was located on the present site of HyVee at 86th and Douglas. The Valerius site occupies 11 acres at 92nd and Dewey Gibbs Road.
