FAC Weekly Update
October 20, 2023
Good Morning, FAC Family
We hope you had a fantastic week!
Congratulations to the students of the 1:25 and 2:20 p.m. Jazz Studios on their outstanding concert performances this week. Many thanks as always to the students of the Theatre Design & Production program for providing lighting and stage managing for the concerts, and to the students of the Recording Arts program for assisting with live sound.
Next week, a team of four FAC Faculty and one Administrator will be heading to the Arts Schools Network National Conference in Birmingham, AL. During the week-long conference, the FAC will be accepting our award for the ASN Exemplary School Designation. We are excited to officially be recognized as one of the top Arts Schools in the nation!
Here's the latest from the halls of the FAC...
This Week's Student Leadership Lesson
Taking Risks - from Creativity, Inc.
- “Always take a chance on better, even if it seems threatening.”
- “Making the process better, easier, and cheaper is an important aspiration, something we continually work on—but it is not the goal. Making something great is the goal.”
- “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”
- “We humans like to know where we are headed, but creativity demands that we travel paths that lead to who-knows-where.”
- “This principle eludes most people, but it is critical: You are not your idea, and if you identify too closely with your ideas, you will take offense when they are challenged.”
- “The desire for everything to run smoothly is a false goal—it leads to measuring people by the mistakes they make rather than by their ability to solve problems.”
- “It isn’t enough to pick a path—you must go down it.”
Ed Catmull with Amy Wallace; Creativity, Inc. - Overcoming the Unseen Forces that Stand in the Way of True Inspiration

Important Dates and Upcoming Events
The Aspen String Trio - in Concert at the FAC
Join us for a FREE concert next Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the FAC Recital Hall. The world-renowned Aspen String Trio takes the stage, presenting a concert that is sure to delight our audience. The Trio will be in residence during the day on Tuesday, working with both our AM and PM Strings Chamber Music students. The residency is being funded by the Fine Arts Center Partners - the 501c3 that supports above-and-beyond experiences for our students.
About the Aspen String Trio:
The Aspen String Trio is one of the rare professional string trios performing and touring today. Celebrated for visionary programming and virtuoso performances offered with humor and insight, AST performs the complete trios of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, as well as lesser known blockbuster works by Dohnanyi, Hindemith, Martinů, Rozsa, Klein, Veress, Villa-Lobos and Ysaÿe, among others. Consistently praised for their masterful sensitivity and nuance, their ultra-refined musicianship, tight ensemble work and musical intelligence, AST formed as summer artist teaching colleagues at Aspen Music Festival and School more than twenty years ago.
Violinist David Perry, formerly a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, now leads the Pro Arte Quartet, in residence at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he holds a Collins Endowed Professorship; he is also concertmaster of the Chicago Philharmonic. Violist Victoria Chiang is a member of the artist faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, was formerly on the faculty of The Juilliard School and the Hartt School of Music, and previously served on the board of the American Viola Society. Cellist Michael Mermagen is Associate Professor of Cello at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance; formerly Associate Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at The Catholic University of America, and he has served as Chamber Symphony Principal Cellist of the Aspen Music Festival and School for more than 25 years.

American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) is on a mission to reclaim the immigrant soul of American Roots Music. With several Grammy awards among its members, APQ brings together diverse backgrounds and talents to reimagine timeless songs from America’s past. By weaving together the music, stories, and experiences of many people, APQ creates a beautiful musical tapestry that draws connections between contemporary American culture and its immigrant roots. Their repertoire includes expert reimaginings of classic songs such as "Wayfaring Stranger," "Pretty Saro," and "Beneath the Willow.”
Conceived by Clay Ross, a multi-Grammy award-winning musician known for his work with Ranky Tanky, APQ represents an earnest effort to reconcile traditional Southern roots with decades of experience collaborating in New York City's jazz and world music scenes. With a sound that blends jazz refinement, country twang, West African hypnotics, and East Asian ornaments, APQ creates a musical patchwork that celebrates both differences and commonalities, serving as a metaphor for a more inclusive nation.
Since launching in 2020, APQ has covered nearly 20,000 miles together. Their impressive credentials include collaborating with prestigious cultural institutions such as Carnegie Hall in NYC, Forbes Center in VA, Weis Center in PA, and Walton Center in AR. The group made their international festival debut in 2022 at the World Expo in UAE. APQ has received both residency and touring grants from South Arts and Mid-Atlantic Arts, and they have been selected as official showcasing artists at Western Arts Alliance, Arts Midwest, NC Arts Market, and Folk Alliance. Their debut album, recorded at Echo Mountain Studio’s in Asheville, NC will be released in Fall of 2023.
