Sgt. Jeff Jenkins
We honored our own Jeff Jenkins, who was recently promoted to Sgt. by the Johnson City Police Department. Sgt. Jenkins has served Johnson City for over 30 years in a variety of capacities, including Officer in Charge of the JCPD Canine Unit for a number of years. Currently, Sgt. Jenkins acts as Officer in Charge of the Johnson City Schools’ School Resource Officer program. Congratulations to Sgt. Jenkins!

TCAP Reading Passage Review Committee
Towne Acres Elementary teacher Allison Berry was recently selected to participate on the TCAP Reading Passage Review Committee (Grades 3-4 ELA) by the Tennessee Department of Education.
Monday Club of Johnson City’s Youth Poetry Contest
Students from Towne Acres Elementary participated in the Monday Club of Johnson City’s Youth Poetry Contest. In addition to being recognized this evening, winners of the contest will be recognized at a reception at the Johnson City Public Library on April 8th, 2024 at 3:00 pm. This year’s contest winners were (left to right): James Sandos, Helen Keaton and Callum Caruthers.
students from both Indian Trail and Liberty Bell Middle School recently participated in the Tennessee State Civics Essay contest as part of the Secretary of State’s Civic Engagement Program. Tennessee students in grades Prek-12 are encouraged to participate. For Middle School Students, the essay prompt asked students “How Should Leaders Lead?”. The following students were school level winners at Indian Trail and will now advance to state level competition. They are

Next Board of Education Meeting
The next Johnson City Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, February 5 starting at 6 p.m. inside the Board Room at Central Office (100 E. Maple Street). Board meetings can be viewed on the Johnson City Schools' YouTube channel.

Johnson City Schools’ Food Service Department is pleased to inform our students, families, and stakeholders that beginning Tuesday, January 9, all enrolled students at six elementary schools will begin receiving free breakfast and lunch. Students who attend Cherokee Elementary, Fairmont Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, North Side Elementary, South Side Elementary and Woodland Elementary will have access to free breakfast and lunch each school day through the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Industry Signing Day
On Tuesday we hosted an industry signing day at the Science Hill Career and Technical Education building. There three Science Hill students will be interning at Bell Helicopter in Piney Flats. On Thursday, December 21, we learned that our schools accounted for 7 A’s, 3 B’s, and a C after the Tennessee Department of Education released their inaugural letter grades for schools across the state.
Science Hill High School received the highest grade, an A, as did both Indian Trail Middle School and Liberty Bell Middle School. Additionally, Cherokee Elementary, North Side Elementary, South Side Elementary and Woodland Elementary received A’s. While Fairmont Elementary, Lake Ridge Elementary and Towne Acres Elementary received B’s. Mountain View Elementary received a C.
Santa’s Workshop returned to Indian Trail Middle School to help students find gifts for their families. In the weeks leading up to break, Indian Trail Care Counselors transformed their office into a magical Toyland with gifts that the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Department donated through their annual Gift Drive. The Indian Trail Care Counselors helped to identify students who would benefit, serving more than 125 students who picked out on average five gifts for their family through the event.
Your Library is partnering with the Northeast Tennessee Holocaust Education Council to host Sonja DuBois, a child survivor of the Holocaust who lives in Knoxville.
DuBois will speak about her experience on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in the library’s Jones Meeting Center. Her autobiography, Finding Schifrah: The Journey of a Dutch Holocaust Child Survivor, will be for sale at the event and there will be a book signing after her talk.
The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and the Johnson City Public Library are teaming up to bring you an evening Musical Instrument Petting Zoo! Bring the whole family to this fun event and let your kids learn about and experience an array of orchestral instruments on Monday, January 29 at 6pm!
