Dear Boone Meadow Families -
Welcome back!
As expected, the week back to school has been a busy one for sure. Unrest in the U.S. Capitol and the ongoing pandemic demands kept Team Meadow alert and sensitive to student needs and questions. No doubt, many students brought topics of concern and conversation to playground, classroom, and community circles, and our team responded by listening, guiding, answering some questions, and then helped students navigate unexpected perspectives or varied thoughts from peers. Our team listens whenever we are able and aware, and then encourages students to share their feelings and concerns with trusted adults. Thank you for your partnership as we continue to support our children in these matters in a way that allows them to seek understanding, as well as, bring positivity and hope to our community.
Preschool: We are so excited to have preschool back in the building. Mrs. Deater's Preschool class (previously located at ZWEST) got in to full swing on the BME campus this week. This slightly impacts our arrival and dismissal procedures, so please take note of our 4 and 5 year old friends that are new to our space
Communication regarding COVID:
- Thank you for completing the daily screener as required by our Health Department each day. These should be completed each day, prior to arrival to campus.
- Also, should you have any concerns regarding symptoms, possible exposures or positive test results in your home, please contact the school so we can prepare and follow protocols to keep our school community safe and healthy. Your diligence is greatly appreciated.
- Please note that should your child need to quarantine, it is our desire to keep your child on track academically. This is balanced with what is feasible and reasonable with instruction and materials coming from school on short notice. It may take a couple of days to get everything aligned and does not automatically result in "virtual" or remote learning. Our team will accommodate as they are able to keep your child on track with learning content, of which, some might need to be "made up" when they return to school following quarantine.
Remote Materials Pick Up- For those families with remote learners, our next materials pick up day is next Tuesday, January 12th. Please see information located below.
Thankful for you and the community we serve,
Tom

School Lunch & Food Service Update!
Happy New Year from the BME Café!
A quick note to let everyone know that the Government Waiver for Free lunches for ALL students was extended until the end of the school year. So, all school lunches are free for every student until June 2021!
Please note, that in order to be charged the $0.00 on your student lunch account, your child must receive a complete lunch containing all the required components which includes one milk. (If your child has a Physician signed Diet Modification on file for a milk allergy, a cup of water will be substituted. Otherwise, one milk comes with every meal.)
If your student is purchasing an additional milk with their lunch, it will be at a cost of $0.60 each. This includes any student who packs a lunch from home and requests a milk, each milk purchased with a packed lunch will cost $0.60 each on the lunch account.
Thank you SO much for your participation in our lunch program! The best part of our day is seeing those bright, hungry faces (well, as much of their faces as we can see…Hahaha)!
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me at cpendleton@zcs.k12.in.us

Crosswalk Safety Guidance
Dear Families of BME Walkers & Bike Riders –
Safety is one of our highest concerns for students and staff at BME. Please read carefully in effort to partner for your child’s safety as they utilize the crosswalk, especially during dismissal at the end of the day.
- In effort to provide families the opportunity to utilize the car rider line on tricky weather days (or dodge construction on fire hydrants), all walkers/bikers will be dismissed last each day. You will note that our car line will have approximately 10-20 cars remaining in line when we call walkers/bikers from their classrooms for dismissal. This results in your child leaving the building and being escorted to the crosswalk 5-10 minutes later than you are currently accustomed.
- Secondly and whenever possible, please meet your child(ren) at the crosswalk. BME staff can assist students to the edge of school property, and they will serve to assist students as they cross South Main Street. As we consider the safety of students and staff, we are unable to assist students to the pool/playground parking lot at Clark Meadows as BME staff cannot be liable for safety (crossing streets, traffic, etc…) once off school property.
As always, we thank you for your partnership as we strive to keep students and staff safe.

Arrival and Dismissal Notes:
Below, you will find some updates regarding arrival and dismissal:
Car Riders:
- Thank you for keeping our fire lane clear until signaled by staff to pull up. The fire lane must remain clear as much as possible for potential emergency needs and school deliveries.
- Displaying car/family numbers in an easy to see manner is greatly beneficial. Ball point pen writing on a post it placed on your dash is hard for my old eyes to see, so bold numbers hanging from the rear view mirror or attached to the passenger sun visor assists in moving vehicles efficiently through the line.
- Please reduce idling when possible. The build up of vehicle emissions is not only harmful for the environment, but also creates unhealthy air quality for staff and students.
Walker/Bikers:
Safety is one of our highest concerns for students and staff at BME. Please read carefully in effort to partner for your child’s safety as they utilize the crosswalk, especially during dismissal at the end of the day.
- In effort to provide families the opportunity to utilize the car rider line on tricky weather days (or dodge construction on fire hydrants), all walkers/bikers will be dismissed last each day. As we consider the safety of students and staff, we are unable to assist students to the pool/playground parking lot at Clark Meadows as BME staff cannot be liable for safety (crossing streets, traffic, etc…) within your neighborhood.
As always, we thank you for your partnership as we strive to keep students and staff safe.
Significant weather (walkers/bikers) - When weather is inclement with heavy rain, heavy snow, sleet, etc...walking to school is highly discouraged. The office team will make the decision if staff will be present at the crosswalk.
- If families decide to walk to school and no crosswalk staff is present, an adult or family member must safely escort students to the front doors. The doors will open at 7:50 for arrival, and families should wait at the front doors with their students until the doors open.
Dismissal on inclement weather days: Walkers and bikers will be dismissed after car riders (approximately 2:35). This allows families to use the car line for pick up. Simply display your family number while you are in line and pick up your child(ren) at the front door with staff assistance.
In the event of questionable or severe weather, families must utilize the car rider procedures instead of walking/biking. (stormy weather, lightning, sleet, you need to get Toto before going to the Land of Oz...)
Please do not bypass the car rider line and request to pick up students from the parking lot, other school sidewalks, etc... Again, we must adhere to all procedures for the safety of students and staff.
Diversity Coalition
ZCS and the Zionsville Diversity Coalition partnered to create a list of mentor texts that support our elementary adopted literacy curriculum. Books donated will be placed in our elementary classrooms for teachers to use and to offer our students mirrors (seeing themselves), windows (seeing others), and doors (opportunities to learn about differences) because in ZCS, EVERYONE BELONGS!
