The end of the quarter will arrive next Friday. This quarter was marked by remarkable achievements from our students. Their hard work, dedication, and resilience have shone through, and we are proud of their progress. We encourage both parents and students to take a moment to review their performance and set new goals for the upcoming quarter. Remember, we're here to support you every step of the way.

Now, we look ahead with excitement to a fresh start. The opportunity for new experiences, learning, and growth comes with the beginning of a new quarter. Our dedicated team of educators is ready to guide and inspire our students.

Maintaining a safe and harmonious environment is a collective responsibility, and it's crucial that we all work together to discourage fights and promote a culture of respect and understanding. I urge all students to consider the following points:

1. Communication: Instead of resorting to physical confrontation, we encourage open and respectful communication to resolve conflicts. If you have a problem with someone, consider talking to them or seeking help from a trusted adult or our counseling services.

2. Conflict Resolution: Our school has trained staff members who can help mediate and resolve conflicts. Please utilize these resources to find peaceful solutions to your problems.

3. Zero Tolerance: Remember that violence and fighting are strictly against our school's policies. Consequences for those involved in fights may include suspensions and other disciplinary actions.

4. Role Modeling: As students, you play a significant role in setting an example for your peers. Choose kindness, empathy, and cooperation over aggression.

Parents and guardians, your support in this matter is invaluable. Please have conversations with your children about the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and encourage them to contact teachers or counselors if they encounter problems at school.

Please remember as the weather turns colder, no ski masks or hoods can be worn in the building. This is a student safety and security matter.

Attention Class of 2024! Distinguished Young Women of Wayne County is now accepting applications for the 2024 scholarship program! High school seniors interested, apply at DistinguishedYW.org. The deadline to apply is October 22, 2023.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

• Completed FAFSA on file for every year this scholarship is utilized
• Must be a newly admitted first-year student at Lawrence Tech with around a 3.0 GPA
• 2024 graduate of one of the following high schools:
  • John Glenn High School (Westland, MI)
  • Wayne Memorial High School (Wayne, MI)
  • William D Ford Technical Center (Westland, MI)

Notes:
*Students must submit the application for admission by April 1
*Students who receive this scholarship are not eligible to receive any additional merit, athletic, or LTU funded scholarships.
*Scholarship funds are for tuition use only.

Award Amount: $20,000 annually ($80,000 over 8 semesters)

EMU will be here on January 17th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn lecture hall. We are encouraging parents to attend, but students are welcome as well. This event will help parents better understand how to fill out the FAFSA.

• The end of the marking period is approaching. Please look over your student's grades on ParentConnect and encourage them to speak with their teachers.
• Any student enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) class who wants to take the test in May can now register and pay for the exam. The cost is $100 per test ($40 for those who qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program), and the deadline to pay/register is November 10th. Students can pay online through THIS LINK, or they can pay cash to Ms. Kolcz in the Counseling Office. Once payment is received, students will be issued a receipt, and the test will be ordered. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Kolcz at kolczh@wwcsd.net.

  Are you a Senior with a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher? If so, you are eligible to apply for several JGHS local scholarships with one application! The application, essay, and two letters of recommendation must be submitted to the Counseling office by February 1, 2024, to be eligible.

Career Counselor Corner – Fall 2023 Newsletter

Making decisions about your future career can be overwhelming, whether you're a student or an adult. However, Wayne Westland College and Career Week provides an excellent opportunity to start thinking about career pathways while having fun. The Wayne Westland College and Career Readiness department focuses on three key areas: Awareness, Exploration, and Preparation. To help our students navigate this space and make informed decisions about their future, we have highly qualified staff, including teachers, counselors, Michigan College Access Network Advisors, and CCR Advisors at our comprehensive high schools. Our goal is to provide top-quality career guidance and develop a range of career tools available all year round to assist our students. As we kick off our district-wide College and Career Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to participate, have fun, and explore the many ways students can acquire valuable information about different careers.

Regular attendance is crucial for your child's academic success. Please make every effort to ensure your child attends school on time every day and stays throughout the whole day. Consistent attendance throughout the school day allows your child to engage in learning and maximize their educational opportunities fully.

Illness: If your child is not feeling well and cannot attend school, please notify us immediately. Students who are ill should not attend school to prevent the spread of illness to others.

Excused Absences: We understand that there may be instances when your child needs to be absent due to illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, or other legitimate reasons. Please notify the school in advance whenever possible to classify the absence as excused.

Unexcused Absences: Unexcused absences negatively impact your child's education. Absences without valid reasons will be considered unexcused, and appropriate actions may be taken per district policy.

Timely reporting of absences helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures that your child's absence is properly documented. Absences must be reported within 24 hours.

There are two convenient methods for reporting your child's absence to facilitate efficient communication and accurate attendance records.

• You can notify your child's school through the dedicated attendance line. Please leave a detailed message stating your child's name, grade, and reason for absence.

• You can report absences directly through MiStar, our secure online portal for student information. MiStar provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to submit absences.

Thank you for your ongoing support in creating a positive and productive learning environment for all our students.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools has a Family Resource Center (FRC), which provides services to any student/family enrolled in our District, free of cost. Some of the services they provide are: basic need assistance, access to over 700 local resources, Laundry Assistance Program and material items for those unable to afford them (emergency toiletries, socks/underwear, hats/gloves/scarves, etc.). They are also able to provide school supplies and backpacks year round for any WWCS student. Please contact our Family Resource Center at: 734-419-2709 or FRC@wwcsd.net. Our FRC also has a Digital Request for Services Form, which can be used to request assistance. Please contact the Family Resource Center directly with any additional questions regarding their services.

The Corewell Health John Glenn Teen Clinic is open! We provide physicals, hearing and vision screenings, immunizations, sick care, and asthma management. We are grant-funded and accept all insurance. However, no patient will be turned away for inability to pay.
