Dear Friends
November 23, 2021
District to implement Test to Stay Program
The Snohomish School District, the Snohomish Health District and the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) recognize the importance of students remaining in school after potential exposure to COVID-19 at school but are not showing any signs or symptoms of the virus. The Snohomish School District is participating in the DOH Test to Stay Program. The program will be implemented in our schools beginning Monday, December 6.
The state’s Test to Stay Program was introduced to keep exposed students in school after showing a negative test result to the COVID-19 virus. Students who are exposed at school would be tested with parental/guardian consent using rapid antigen tests administered by trained school personnel. A negative test result would allow students to stay in school.
In order to administer the rapid antigen tests, the state has mandated an online recording mechanism through a tool called SimpleReport. As part of the testing process, parents/guardians of students must enroll in the online registration tool at this link www.sno.wednet.edu/covidtestingregistration prior to testing. Students ages 18 and older can complete the registration process on their own. This online registration must be completed in order for our schools to administer the rapid antigen testing. In completing the online registration, parents/guardians or students (if ages 18 and older) will provide consent for this type of testing. All information will be maintained by the Washington State Department for Health and is strictly confidential.
Anyone who tests positive will be sent home immediately to isolate for 10 days. Positive results will be communicated to the Washington State Department of Health and the Snohomish Health District.
Participation Guidelines - DOH Test to Stay Program:
- Parent/guardian consent and registration of student is required.
- Students may attend school but may not participate in extra or co-curricular activities. Students must remain in modified quarantine outside of school for 7 days.
- Test #1 will be performed at school following recognition of exposure, and a second test will be collected 5-7 days after last exposure.
- If a student tests positive for COVID-19 at any time, they must isolate themselves at home and follow DOH isolation guidance.
- Fully vaccinated students who meet the definition of close contact and remain asymptomatic are not required to quarantine or participate in the DOH Test to Stay Program. However, they are welcome to participate and are encouraged to get tested 3-5 days after their exposure date.
- Students exposed to COVID-19 outside of school or as household contacts are not eligible to participate in this program, per the DOH.
- Students not meeting guidelines will return to out-of-school quarantine process.
- Students meeting the above guidelines may stay in school if they show negative results and show no symptoms of the virus.
The Snohomish School District is committed to keeping our schools safe and students healthy. Please join us by registering your child today. Please direct questions to your school principal or David Greene, COVID-19 Administrator, at 360-563-7245.

COVID-19 quarantine options - Beginning December 6, 2021
If your student or a member of your immediate household has tested positive for COVID-19, please make sure your school nurse or principal are aware so that appropriate health and safety precautions can be taken.
If your student has been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive (non-school related exposure) for COVID-19, please let your school nurse or principal know so they are aware of quarantine dates and can provide support.
NEW BEGINNING DECEMBER 6 - OPTION ONE: Test to Stay (two negative tests required) – Student remains at school
The Snohomish Health District, in alignment with the Washington State Department of Health, allows a student is identified as a close contact at school to remain at school after exposure, if they meet all of criteria below:
- Are tested at least twice during a 7-day period. Rapid antigen testing is completed at school and includes one test conducted as soon as possible following recognition of the exposure and one test collected 5-7 days after last exposure. Testing would require parent/guardian consent prior to any testing.
- Have no symptoms of COVID-19.
- Continue to wear a face covering/mask.
- Continue to quarantine outside of school (i.e., not participate in extracurricular activities at school, including sports and other activities outside of their home.)
The Test to Stay option is only available for students exposed at school and is not applicable to students exposed outside of school. This option is in alignment with the district’s Test to Stay Memo of Understanding with the Snohomish Health District.
OPTION TWO: Close contact - 7-day quarantine option (with testing)
The Snohomish Health District, in alignment with the Washington State Department of Health, allows a modified 7-day quarantine period for unvaccinated close contacts with proof of a negative test and as long as they continue to be symptom free. For those who choose this option, they must stay in quarantine for 7 full days beginning after the last contact with the positive person and they must receive a negative test result (get tested no sooner than day 5 after last contact). The test which must be completed on day 5, 6 or 7 of the quarantine period must be a physician-, lab-, pharmacy- or clinic-confirmed test and must include the person’s name, date of test, name of testing facility and test results. Results must be presented and verified by the school nurse or school principal.
OPTION THREE: Close contact - 10-day quarantine (no testing)
The Snohomish Health District, in alignment with the Washington State Department of Health, allows a modified 10-day quarantine period for unvaccinated close contacts. Identified close contacts may return to school 10 days after their last close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual without testing, as long as they are symptom free.
OPTION FOUR: Close contact - 14-day quarantine (no testing)
The Snohomish School District will continue to support those families who prefer to keep their students home for the 14-day quarantine.
Close contact - Vaccinated or have tested positive for COVID-19 within past 90 days
Fully vaccinated people (2 weeks after last vaccination dose) or those who have had a documented case of COVID-19 within the last 90 days with no symptoms do not need to quarantine after COVID-19 exposure. Watch for symptoms for 14 days and recommendations include getting tested 3-5 days after exposure. If symptoms develop, get tested.
Test positive for COVID-19 - 10-day isolation
- For those who test positive for COVID-19, the state guidance has not changed.
- Return to school after 10-day isolation period (from the date of testing (if no symptoms) or from the date of symptom onset).
- If symptoms or fever persist after 10-day isolation, person who tested positive can return when there is no fever and symptoms are improving.
- Stay home for the full 10-day isolation period, regardless of symptoms or test results.

Welcome back volunteers!
We will start utilizing volunteers in schools on a limited basis beginning Monday, December 6. At this time only vaccinated individuals will be permitted to volunteer in our schools/campuses.
To volunteer in our schools/campuses, please complete the following online form. This form must be completed every two years. For the safety of our students, volunteer applicants must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check before beginning service. Volunteers will also need to present a valid state vaccination card for COVID-19 to the school administrator and follow the school’s volunteer process. Schools may need to monitor and limit the number of volunteers in a building to meet the state COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing. Parent/guardians are welcome to volunteer from home by assisting teachers remotely.
Volunteers who have completed the background application and showed proof of vaccination will be required to:
- Sign in at the school main office
- Present proper state ID
- Maintain 6-foot social distancing
- Wear a proper fitting mask/face covering
- Follow all school and district COVID-19 protocols and procedures
- Stay home if experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms

CTE program highlights
Below are some highlights of recent student activities and achievements.
CorePlus - A video crew from The Boeing Company was recently at Snohomish High School to interview students and get video footage regarding our district's involvement in the CorePlus program.
Snohomish High School is a recognized CorePlus curriculum provider. Through this program, students learn first-hand core skills including use and safety of shop equipment, precision measuring, material science, print reading and record keeping. The Boeing Company actively recruits students who graduate from CorePlus programs.
PAWS’ breadth of services is unique among animal organizations in the Pacific Northwest – combining shelter and adoption services, a wildlife hospital and rehabilitation center, and humane education and outreach programs. According to information from PAWS, the new campus will be a refuge for animals in need of care, a destination for people who love animals, and a gathering place where the public and professionals can come to learn about and pursue solutions for animal issues.

Yearbook - Glacier Peak High School's 2021 edition of The Edge – the school’s yearbook - is a winner of the prestigious Emerald Award! The yearbooks was one of two yearbooks in Washington state to be recognized at this level.
“All of the entries we had this year made it incredibly difficult for the professional journalists doing the selection this year to made decisions,” said Sandra Coyer, a board member for the Washington Journalism Educators Association that hosts the competition. “It was amazing to see what students came up with in the middle of a pandemic.”
Last school year, COVID-19 forced most yearbook preparations online. Glacier Peak High School students worked together in person for only 18 days in the spring.
The Washington Journalism Educators Association boasts members from 200 schools. The yearbooks are judged by professional journalists with expertise in graphic design and yearbooks. The categories assessed are photography, writing, graphic design and the yearbook’s theme – particularly how that theme is carried throughout the publication.
Free ACT opportunity - Juniors
The Snohomish School District will be offering the ACT (American College Test) free of charge for all high school juniors on March 8, 2022 during the school day. This is an amazing opportunity for students to take a college entrance exam at no cost to families and for our schools to collect data that will help improve student learning. As a district, offering free ACT reflects our commitment to eliminating barriers to career and college readiness. Students testing on March 8 at their high school will be registered by the district office. Therefore, you do not need to do anything to register your student for the March 8, 2022 testing session. Students who take the ACT outside of the March 8 district-hosted testing will need to follow the ACT National testing process on www.act.org.
The ACT is a leading U.S. college admissions test and includes tests in science, writing, reading, math and English. It is a curriculum-based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college. It includes an Interest Inventory that provides students with valuable information for career and educational planning as well as a Student Profile Section that provides a comprehensive profile of an examinee’s work in high school and his/her future. To learn more about the ACT, please visit www.act.org.
Students who may need testing accommodations such as students with an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan), 504 Plan, or specific health plans and students receiving English Language (EL) services, will be contacted by their special education teacher, counselor, EL teacher, or school nurse. For the accommodations request to be submitted to ACT on your student’s behalf, the request form must be filled out completely with parent consent, which can be done over the phone. For students on a 504 Plan, ACT requires a doctor’s note when requesting accommodations; if you do not have one on file with our district office, you will need to provide one. All accommodation forms must be completed by January 6, 2022.
Please note that if your student is approved for an accommodation, they will be testing on March 8 - March 11, 2022 at your student’s school, grouped according to timing code.
Specific testing directions will come from your school site. For accommodation request questions, please contact your child’s school:

Are you ready for inclement weather?
We know that our Pacific Northwest weather can be unpredictable. Please take a few minutes to review the information below so you know what to expect when there is a weather event. It’s difficult when things happen that are out of our control, and we thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility.
If inclement weather conditions occur during the night, the district office will decide whether to:
- Hold school (regular hours)
- Hold school (delayed start) - All schools will start two hours late
- Close school
- Learn more at www.sno.wednet.edu/weather
In the event that our schools are closed or are starting late:
- Automated phone calls and emails are sent to all district families through the School Messenger system (the system is automatically populated with the primary phone numbers and email addresses available in the Skyward/Family Access system).
- A notice is posted on the district Facebook page at www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict
- A notice is placed on the district website at www.sno.wednet.edu
- Local television and radio stations are notified.
- Emails are sent through our listserv newsletter subscription system.
- A notice is sent to the statewide public emergency notification system - www.flashalertseattle.net or www.flashalertseattle.net/closures-cats.html
Because we know many are getting ready for school or leaving early, we try to get these notifications out to our school community between 5:15-5:45 a.m. If we are fully certain of the situation the evening in advance, we will let our families know at that time. If Snohomish is not mentioned during the newscasts, through School Messenger or on our website, you will know our schools are open and buses are operating on or near the normal schedule.
Limited transportation information:
When weather conditions dictate that certain roads are not safely passable, the district will announce it is providing limited transportation. Each school office has a list of the roads/areas that our buses will not travel on when limited transportation is in effect. Please remember, limited transportation will be in effect for both the morning and afternoon routes, even if roads have cleared during the day.
- 2021-2022 Limited Transportation (Snow) Routes & Schedules - www.sno.wednet.edu/snowroutes
- Parents/guardians of students on special education services routes/buses should receive information in mid-November 2021 with their inclement weather schedules and stop locations. If unsure of times/locations, please contact the Transportation Department at 360-563-3535 or 360-563-3525 in the morning.
- The times and locations on the limited transportation (snow) pdfs reflect normal pick up times - please add two hours if there is a two-hour school delay.
- If routes operate on limited transportation (snow), those routes will be in effect for both the morning and afternoon, even if roads have cleared during the day.
- There may be a situation in which there is no two-hour delay and buses are operating on limited transportation routes. In these cases, schools will start at normal times.
If there is a two-hour delayed start, the following will apply:
- All regular full-day classes will be held (beginning two hours later than normal).
- No a.m. and/or p.m. half-day special education preschool, or ECEAP.
- No morning elementary band.
- No morning AIM classes.
- No zero-hour classes.
- No morning Sno-Isle Technical Skills Center.
- No out-of-district transportation.
- Buses may be on normal routes or limited transportation routes (decision will remain in effect for the entire day).
- Note: If there is inclement weather on any Friday and a two-hour delayed start is decided, please note the following:
- Schools will start two hours after usual starting times.
- Schools will dismiss at their regular (Monday through Thursday) dismissal times and not the regular Friday two-hour early release times.
- School schedules are located here - www.sno.wednet.edu/calendar
Please note: If school has been closed for the day, there will be no district busing or transportation available. All evening meetings or functions scheduled to take place in district facilities will be cancelled. A decision will be made by noon on the impacted day regarding the possibility of afternoon district- and school-sponsored activities and practices.
If school is in session and weather worsens during the day, the district office will make the decision whether or not to close school and will notify the schools. This will occur only if there is an emergency, such as a localized disaster or widespread extreme weather conditions. If a school closure occurs in the middle of the day, secondary schools will dismiss students so that most will arrive home before elementary students. Elementary students will be dismissed at the regular time. Parents/guardians need to have an alternate plan for their child(ren). Make certain they know what they are to do and/or where they should go if parents cannot get home due to weather conditions.
Snohomish Aquatic Center
- If the school district is operating under a two-hour delayed start, the Snohomish Aquatic Center will open at 9 a.m. Instructional programming will occur as planned, subject to staff availability.
- If the school district is closed for the day, the Snohomish Aquatic Center will open at 9 a.m. Water fitness classes may be held subject to staff availability. Swim and dive lessons will be canceled.
