Heath Brook School...
Information and news from and to the school community
February 13, 2023
You should have seen all the 100th day celebrations in classrooms last week! Small things, big things, many things to count! There were even 100+ toys donated for children in hospital - thanks to our preschool classes and Mrs. Hynes' class. I love that we can learn, count, and share love and kindness to those who could use something good in their life.

Library Learning from Mrs. Smallidge...
Heath Brook students started 2023 by taking part in the Massachusetts School Library Association’s bookmark contest. Everyone’s bookmarks were wonderful! We chose Delilah from Ms. Price’s class as the Heath Brook representative in the statewide contest. Good luck, Delilah!
All Tewksbury K-1 students took part in a Mock Caldecott event in January. We read four books around which there was Caldecott buzz and discussed which books had better illustrations that helped to tell the story. Students decided that Knight Owl by Christopher Denise deserved the Caldecott - and they weren’t far off! Knight Owl ended up as one of the 2023 Caldecott Honor books. Another book we read, Hot Dog by Doug Salati, was the winner of the Caldecott Medal.
Both grades got to do science experiments recently. Kindergarteners learned that snow is frozen water, and we explored what materials are the most waterproof. First graders explored how penguins stay warm and dry and how they waterproof their feathers. Everyone enjoyed reading nonfiction books and putting what they learned to use.
We are currently celebrating Black History Month. Kindergarten is reading books that celebrate Black families and learning about onomatopoeias at the same time. First grade is researching important Black athletes, with an emphasis on Mabel Fairbanks, the first Black figure skating superstar.

Hello Heath Brook Families,
I hope everyone is staying warm. Winter is here to stay for a bit. Please be sure your child dresses in layers, and it's always a good idea to have an extra pair of mittens and a hat in case they get wet.

Looking for Parent Volunteers for 3 projects...
Project 1 - Buddy Bench...When the Trahan School staff and students moved to Center Elementary School we received their two benches - to keep them in the neighborhood. We would like to move one of them outside by the playground to be a Buddy Bench. Buddy Benches were invented to combat loneliness and bullying in schools. Sometimes called a friendship bench, these benches are provided on school playgrounds as a way for students to signal to others that they are feeling lonely or would like someone to invite them to play or just talk together.
What we need: Volunteer(s) to paint or stain bench so it may be placed outside by our playground.
Project 2 - Movement of furniture within school and some out to dumpster area. There are several piles of tables, cases, dividers that need to be moved from their current locations. Some are broken or can't be used. We need those brought to the dumpster area so our town facilities/maintenance folks can pick them up for disposal. Others need to be moved to one of our empty classrooms to be stored until we re-organize classrooms this spring for next school year.
What we need: 4-8 people for about one hour. This can be done in an evening or a weekend.
Project 3 - Change dates on outside school sign. This is a once a month job. There are five more sign changes until summer. Our current volunteer is willing to train/help.
What we need: 1 or 2 people per month to swap out message (provided by office)
If you are willing to help with one or more of these tasks please email me - tgerrish@tewksbury.k12.ma.us
