Wiggin Street Parent Update

Better Together
As many of you know, research projects through Project Based Learning is a big part of Kindergarten at Wiggin Street. This year students were very interested in Halloween and chose to create their very own haunted house. They have been working on it with their third grade buddies doing research about pumpkins, spiders, skeletons, and more. For example, they learned that spiders have more than two eyes which led to even more research.
Older students had the option to go through the Haunted House, and I had the opportunity to experience it this afternoon. The Kindergarten students were highly engaged and enjoyed making me jump! LOL
I have also experienced watching students problem solve engineering trees they made move, writing stories with pictures, scribbles, beginning letter sounds, and words using a word wall, and working together in small groups. These are all examples of using the "4Cs" for 21st Century Learning: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity.
We are so proud of the growth our Kindergarteners and all students have made this quarter! Having a growth mindset is an important skill to becoming lifelong learners. Have a great weekend!
Warmly,
Christy Grandstaff

Thrive Kids Update
We are excited that we were able to share about Thrive Kids at the MVCSD Board Meeting on Monday! Check out the video above. Our kids are learning to do hard things, and the theme is being heard throughout the building in all aspects of learning.
Thanks to Hannah and Brock for presenting at the meeting and teaching our kids skills that can be applied throughout their life.
Thrive Kids with Coach Hannah
We sure did JUMP today! This week we worked on jumping for HEIGHT by practicing jumping over toilet paper rolls The students had a great time seeing how many rolls they could get over and many surprised themselves with what they could do! Our mindset focus was doing the hard thing when it comes to telling the TRUTH. There are many situations where telling the truth can be very difficult but the more we practice what we will do before it gets hard, the easier it will be!

Pumpkins on Parade
Fall Harvest Parade and Parties
Costumes should come to school in a bag and children should be able to get in and out of their costumes easily. (If you feel your child needs help with his/her costume, please contact the classroom teacher.) Please make sure that there are no scary costumes because of our younger students. There should be no Halloween masks, but protective masks due to the Pandemic are optional, since students will be outside. No pretend weapons of any kind are permitted at school even as a part of the costume. Please save those for trick-or-treat night.
We ask parents not to pass out treats along the route. Any treats brought to school for the class parties must be individually wrapped.

Veterans Day
Sadly, we will not be having a Veterans Day assembly this year, but are happily making other plans to educate our students about the holiday as well as honoring Veterans for their service. We will be having a flag ceremony with our students on the morning of November 9th as a culminating event. This ceremony will be recorded and shared with families in the form of a video. We would love to include videos of students recognizing a Veteran that is or has been in their life. It's as easy as going to this site and recording your student thanking a veteran for their service. The following are examples of questions that may be answered in the video:
1. How is the student associated to the Veteran?
2. What years did the Veteran serve?
3. Which branch of our U.S. Military is this Veteran a member of?
