Face to Face Community Workshops for the changes to Planning and Reporting
The Ministry of Education are holding face-to-face ākonga, parent, whānau and community workshops, where they will be talking about planning and reporting. The programme, Te Whakangārahu Ngātahi | Planning Together, is focused on preparing for the upcoming changes to planning and reporting legislation and requirements.
They would like to share these preparations with you, to not only ensure you are in the know, but also to gather your feedback on the proposed supports - e.g. the tools, resources and support channels to be developed. They need your voice and help co-creating these supports, to ensure they are fit for purpose and add value where it is needed.
These workshops will be held at the following places from 6 – 8:30pm:
- Wednesday 29 March: Henderson Intermediate School: 70 Lincoln Road, Henderson
If you’d like to take part in either of these workshops, you can email planning.together@education.govt.nz to register your interest. Food and drink will be provided, and they look forward to seeing you there.
Further information on planning and reporting and the consultation process can be found here: Te Whakangārahu Ngātahi: Planning Together for Ākonga Success – Our School, Our Community – Conversation space (education.govt.nz)Parking at Rangeview Intermediate School
When coming to visit the school during the day, or to pick up your child, could you please use the top carpark to the right of the main carpark, or park in the public parking spaces on Keru place. We have children walking around our main carpark, and for safety reasons, they need to stay on the footpath.
We appreciate your help in keeping our children as safe as possible.

Students Work - Taniwha Stories
We have been learning about kaitiakitanga (guardianship) in Literacy. The students have written stories that include taniwha. Taniwha are revered powerful creatures from traditional Māori stories. They live in deep pools, rivers, dark caves and the ocean. The waters in which they live can be dangerous and even considered deadly because of currents or unseen dangers, or they may be deemed special, magical and representative of good fortune. They are well known to be guardians of people and specific areas in which they dwell.
The Taniwha by Duaa Amar 8SR
In the depths of the forest, a young boy is staring into the river. All that can be seen in the water is a log lying peacefully on the top of the water, but to him it was his friend, and her name is Aroha. Everyone would constantly tell him that there is no such taniwha in the river, but he knew there was a taniwha there. Suddenly, Aroha emerged from the river and smiled at the boy. She grabbed him and dove into the clear blue water in the river.
Aroha swam across the glistening ocean to visit Tangaroa, the guardian of the ocean. There Aroha found a bright lovely red crystal, it was a ruby. She carefully handed the fragile ruby to her friend, hoping he would like it.
She shot up in the air with the young boy secured in her arms. She was flying up into the sky. She flew and flew until they reached Ranginui, the guardian of the sky. They played in the bright blue sky and jumped around in the clouds. Aroha found a fluffy white feather. She passed the light feather to her friend hoping he would like it.
She fell gracefully to the ground, landing on all fours like a cat. She had taken him to visit Papatuanuku, the great mother and guardian of the land. They both played in the mud and the depths of earth. There Aroha found a soft looking piece of earth. She handed it to her friend hoping he would like it. “Thank you for all the gifts!” He exclaimed. A wide smile shot across Aroha's face.
She took her friend back home putting him gently on the ground, then she floated back into the river lying peacefully. The boy rushed home and on his way there he saw his friend and immediately presented the gifts.
“What’s this rubbish?” his friend chuckled.
“Aroha took me on an adventure,” he said proudly.
“Who is Aroha?” he questioned.
“My taniwha friend, the one in the river” he said. His friend stared at him baffled, “your imaginary taniwha? Yeah right,” he said running away.
The young boy was now downhearted. He slowly walked back to his house but ran into his koro. “What have you got there?” He questioned.
“Oh this? It’s nothing...” He said gloomily.
“I don’t think it’s nothing, I think that taniwha took you to visit different atua, am I right?”
“Well yes but, she's not real” He frowned.
“She is real if you truly believe it in your heart” he informed. The boy smiled gracefully walking to his room.
The Taniwha by Samantha Corley 7KD
Many years ago, there lived a taniwha who was the guardian of the Whau River. He happily played with all the tamariki. Every day they would come and ride on his back through the water. One day, he waited for them to show up, but they never did. “The tamariki don’t love me anymore,” sighed the taniwha. He was incredibly sad, so he decided to go to sleep for a while.
A couple hundred years later he woke up and swam to the surface of the Whau River. He looked around but... it looked very different. The river had turned into a dark greenish colour and he saw plastic bags floating around, it was so disgusting. “Maybe all the tamariki are up at the marae?” He said to himself, so he climbed out of the river and continued to walk across the boiling hot stoney path up to the marae. When he got there, he was shocked, the marae wasn’t there anymore! Instead, there were some taniwha with wheels for legs! BEEP! BEEP! These wheeled taniwhas were speaking a language he had never heard before. “What has become of this world?’ sighed the taniwha. “GET OUT OF THE WAY!” He heard someone yell. The taniwha hurried across the road and as he stopped, he came across tamariki!! He tried to talk to them, but they wouldn’t listen, their eyes were glued to something in their hands that looked like a screen with little buttons on it.
The taniwha frowned and thought to himself, “I wish it were the good old days. Tamariki laughed and played with me. People walked everywhere. I wish people would pay more attention to me. Now they are stuck to their phones and don’t even socialize. I hope one day the world will go back to the way it used to be, I miss it.”
New Books for the School Library
It has been a great start to the year in the Library. So many students have been in to see what is on offer at our Library, and I have been very impressed by their enthusiasm. The Library is a great place for students to come at lunchtimes to read, play board games, do colouring, and make new friends.
Each year the school holds a Scholastic Book Fair to raise funds to purchase new books for the Library. We had a great response to this last year, with many students and families purchasing books at the Book Fair. Consequently, the school has been able to purchase many great new books. Here is a photo of our new books. I hope the students enjoy these. Thank you once again to the families who support Scholastic Book Club and the annual Book Fair.
