During March Madness, the CDW 5th graders have their own tournament! Each week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the 5th grade students will be voting to see which books make it to the next round in the CDW Literary March Madness Tournament.

Lukas James Miller, who recently starred as Prince Topher in the National Tour of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, visited CDW on March 11th during rehearsal. Lukas ran scenes with our cast and provided some valuable advice. He also provided information during a Q&A session. We truly appreciated Lukas taking the time out of his hectic schedule to work with our students. A big thank you to the Del Rosso family for setting up this experience for the CDW Musical students and staff.

On Tuesday, March 14th, Author Jessie Janowitz visited with each Grade 5 Language Arts class to complete her, “Write Now! Character, Setting, Plot” lesson. The students learned how to make their readers feel something by completing a Character Generator activity. Each student received a copy of her books, The Doughnut Fix and The Doughnut King, and she even did a book signing!

Thank you to Ms. DiPisa for coordinating this opportunity for the students, and thank you to the PTO for providing the books for each student!

Welcome to 5th grade Shark Tank! Students put on their business hats in language arts this week and reflected on the needs of our town. Students presented their business proposals for the empty lots in BiState Plaza, and the class acted as potential investors. Here are our winners from each LA section.

Sejong Kim, a CDW 7th grader, has been selected to present his "Hope and Peace" writing piece at the Allendale Nursing Home in Allendale, NJ. He received a "Special Award" from NJ Senator Gordon Johnson (see below), and his essay will be exhibited in the nursing home for all to enjoy!

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

All softball players in grades 3-8, first time, as well as experienced players, are welcome to attend the Golden Knights Softball Camp at NVOT. Please see the flyer below for more information and the attached registration form.

The KPO has organized a fundraiser with Woori Mart. Woori Mart is a local Korean supermarket in Northvale (206 Pegasus Ave. Northvale, NJ). For every gift card purchased, Woori Mart will donate 10% to the OTPTO. Gift cards are sold in increments of $100.

Proceeds will be used to fund the faculty snack carts at TBD and CDW.

Gift cards can be ordered under 'For Sale' items on the PTO website or by check made out to OTPTO. The order deadline is March 18th, and the gift card distribution dates are March 21st to 24th between 11am and 5pm at the Woori Mart customer service.

On Tuesday, March 21st, if you mention the below flyer, 10% of the proceeds will go to the OTPTO!

The PTO Special Lunch will be Korean food from Garden Kitchen on Tuesday, April 4th. Orders can be placed on the OT PTO Website until Friday, March 24th.

The CDW Lost and Found always has lots of items searching for owners! One way to help us locate the owner is by labeling your child's items with his/her name. The OT PTO is sponsoring a wonderful fundraiser where you can purchase labels to use to label your child(ren)'s items! Click here to purchase your Lovable Labels now!

The CDW Spirit Wear store is available on OTPTO.org! The Long Term Store is open year round and orders are shipped directly to the purchaser. The Short Term Store will reopen in the spring.

This year, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) will be administered to all Grade 5 students on Tuesday, March 21st and to all Grade 6 students on Wednesday, March 22nd.

The OLSAT assessment is designed to measure a student's cognitive ability, as it relates to abstract thinking and reasoning ability; however, it does not produce an IQ score. Although the data from the OLSAT will not be used for grading purposes, the results help to identify students who qualify for LEAP, our gifted and talented program, while also providing teachers with additional data points regarding student ability and performance.

If your child becomes eligible for the LEAP Program, the school will contact you at the end of August. Your child's OLSAT scores will be mailed home early June.

No special preparation is necessary for this assessment. We just encourage our middle schoolers to do their best!

The CDW Yearbook will include Grades 5-8, in addition to highlighting our CDW Class of 2023. A form was sent home with your child(ren) on Monday, March 6th. Please complete the form, and provide payment of $65.00 (checks made out to "Charles DeWolf Middle School") to secure your CDW Yearbook.

All forms and payment must be given to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, March 24th.

*A yearbook will be reserved for each Grade 8 student; however, yearbooks will be first come, first serve for students in Grades 5-7.

The National Junior Honor Society members are working on their Changemaker Projects. The Animal Shelter Changemaker group put a donation box in the CDW Lobby to collect the following items for their shelter project:

cat and dog toys

cat and dog food

small blankets

cat and dog treats

Donations will be collected until the end of March.

It is important to remember that our school is full of staff members who are here to help you and your child(ren) all year long. In some cases, you may not be sure whom to contact for specific information. For questions about your child(ren)'s classes, please utilize the teacher as a primary resource before implementing the flow chart.

Dr. Da Giau will be providing a Parent Workshop on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 1:00 PM or 7:00 PM to offer an overview of the State's standardized tests in Grades 3-8, test features, and question prototypes. See the flyer below for more information.

In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Charles DeWolf Middle School is open to any seventh grade student who meets all the membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2023.

During the week of April 24, 2023, eligible students will be identified and invited to apply

for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible

students. The induction ceremony will be held during the week of May 15, 2023 (subject to

change).

The School Year Calendar for the PK-8 Old Tappan Public Schools was approved at Monday evening's Board of Education Meeting. For your convenience, this calendar also will be posted on our District website.
