The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for students, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth. To proactively address these concerns, Wredling and Thompson Middle Schools are offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program aims to increase help-seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend. Listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, the SOS Program showed a reduction in self-reported suicide attempts by 40-64% in randomized control studies (Aseltine et al., 2007 & Schilling et al., 2016).

If you would like more information, a parent meeting has been scheduled for October 23rd from 6:30-7:30 pm in the LRC at Thompson Middle School 6th grade center. A representative from Elyssa’s Mission will provide an overview of the program and answer any questions you may have. More information can also be found in this flyer.

As you may recall from our previous Friday Forecasts and communication through the district, our students watched the movie "Angst" this week. The movie was a gentle movie that explained how anxiety can impact our lives. Sometimes it is the anxiety of a friend, and sometimes our own.

With anxiety, depression, suicide, and self-harm growing across our country it is important that we take time to help kids understand that anxiety can be normal, can be taken care of, and can be managed with support.

Here are a few questions to ask your child this week:

• What did you learn from watching the Angst movie?
• Do you or any of your friends struggle with feeling anxious? How do you handle it?
• Did anyone stand out in the movie to you? Why?
• The filmmakers wanted the audience to be able to take away some tips or ideas on how to help. Did any tips in the film stand out?
• What ways do you think you can support someone you know who experiences anxiety?

We appreciate your support as we tackle some tough issues today. Keeping lines of communication open between your child, you, and our school can make a great difference.

It's not too late to join the RedHawk Wrestling Team! This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a unique team sport at Wredling. Wrestling is a lot of fun, it helps kids get into shape and/or stay healthy. It also gives athletes the advantage of working on individual skills while competing both as an individual and as a team. HOPE will be sponsoring our first HOPE day of the year on Wednesday, Oct. 24. HOPE club will have two "take what you need" boards posted in school (main foyer and 6th grade "up" staircase). Students can take a post-it note from the board that has a positive message on it.

We will be selling t-shirts this week before school, but next week t-shirts are still available in room 154 or by emailing jennifer.amadei@d303.org for $7 each.

This quarter, Business Explore is having a marketplace experience. The goal is to exhibit student products developed in the incubator environment. The event will be held in our library on October 23rd, during periods 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7. We welcome a visit from you along with your input on their efforts!

Do you know the show Fiddler on the Roof? Well, you're in luck! Through Marquee Youth Stage we will be performing Fiddler on the Roof Junior at Pheasant Run Main Stage on November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Don't let those Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns go to waste in a landfill. Pumpkins and squash are full of nutrients that can be composted and used as fertilizer for spring planting. If you don't have a compost bin, there are a few places you can bring your pumpkins to be composted:

• Pushing The Envelope Farm, 1700 Averill Road in Geneva - Bring your pumpkins Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon, sponsored by Kane County and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
• The Great Pumpkin Bowl - Nov. 4 at Pottawatomie Park from 1-3 p.m. $5/person, benefitting St. Charles Underground. First you can knock down bowling pins with your pumpkin, and then you can smash it! The Park District adds the pumpkin pieces to their compost pile.
• SCARCE Pumpkin Smash Events - For a list of more than 20 pumpkin smash events around Illinois, visit www.scarce.org/pumpkins.

Before you drop off your pumpkin, please remove any decorations, candles, stickers etc.
