FAQ for New and Prospective Members
Who can play?
Anyone! We have members of all levels enjoying chess each Thursday. The ages range from 6 to 86 years old.
I’m a beginner. Do I need to know how to play in order to join?
We strongly encourage players to learn the basic rules of chess on their own. Lichess has an excellent tutorial. If you know the rules, you’re ready to play and should feel more than welcome to join us.
Where does the club meet?
We meet at CSI which is located at 300 North Broadway Nyack, NY on Thursday nights from 7 pm to 9:00 pm. Please use the side entrance, which is closer to the parking lot.
Are there membership dues?
Currently there is a membership fee to join the club. Membership is $40/year for adults and $20/year for those 18 and under. As a member you get a few benefits:
Reduced fees for any event or tournament we are hosting
Participation in the weekly game study
Having a great community to play games with every Thursday
What happens at chess club meetings?
We host casual chess games every Thursday from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM where folks play friendly games with other members. We often hold USCF rated tournaments with cash prizes, also on Thursdays. However, there are always casual chess games available even if a tournament is in progress. If you are on our mailing list, you will hear about all events.
What are the best places to find information about chess club activities?
The website - www.rocklandchess.org.
Facebook - we update our Facebook page when there are activities. Please search for Rockland County Chess Club on Facebook.
Email - you will also be receiving emails with any news or updates
What can I bring to the club?
Whenever you can - bring a friend!! Please spread the word and don't keep us a secret. We provide chess sets and chess clocks - but if you have a favorite set that you like to play on please bring it. Please note: we are renting space from a synagogue and therefore cannot allow any non-kosher food. Therefore, we ask that no food nor drink be brought to chess club meetings. (Water is ok.)
