LVES Week 1 Newsletter
LVES August 16, 2024
Exactly what I looked like this week trying to have "balance"! đ Who else can relate??
We Had a Great First 2 Days!!
Dear Amazing Parents,
It is always nice to relax during the summer, but the building is just too quiet without the chatter of all our students. We were so happy to welcome them back this week. I sincerely hope that your child had a great experience these first two days and we hope to continue that positive momentum throughout the year.
I want to thank all of the parents who have been patient, kind, and given us grace as we work through the kinks that the first few days always bring. This is one of the best ways you can show your appreciation and I want you to know it means the world to us. As the principal, it means a lot to me to know that you trust us with your children and believe that we are all doing our very best for them.
Proud Principal,
Kerri Walker
Strive for 5!
Per Texas State Law, in order to receive credit for a course or grade level, a student must be in attendance 90% of the time. Absences whether excused or unexcused count towards the total.
But even more important than the law is that when your child misses school, they miss the amazing instruction that is happening and there's no way to ever truly make that up. Last year, our students missed a total of 5,851 days of instruction which equals 43,882 hours of awesome teaching that went unexperienced.
We want all of our students to be able to take advantage of as much great teaching as possible, so that's why this year we are encouraging all parents to "Strive for 5!" Strive for 5 or less missed days for your child this school year. Please do not misunderstand- if your child is sick, please, please, please keep them home. However, try to plan vacations around our school holidays so that your child can avoid missing as much instruction as possible.
Many parents don't realize that the vast majority of our funding from the state is directly tied to our daily attendance. Each student that is present each day equates to about $37 in funding. If a student is absent, that amount is lost. $37 may not seem like much, but it adds up quickly! When looking at last year's numbers, LVES lost $216,487 in funding due to attendance. That funding could allow us to hire more teachers equating to smaller class sizes to benefit our students.
Again, if your child is sick, please keep them home. The last thing we want is for your child to be miserable here at school and to possibly cause another child to be sick. What we are trying to limit is avoidable absences.
Attendance Reminders
- The tardy bell rings at 7:45. Instruction begins immediately at this time.
- Official attendance is taken each day at 9:25. If your child is not physically present at that time, they are counted absent.
- All attendance notes should be given to your child's teacher or emailed to Christine Harris at charris@lagovistaisd.net. Notes should be returned within 3 school days of the absence or appointment.
- Typically, the later in the school day you can schedule needed appointments, the better. You definitely want to avoid the 9:25 time frame if possible.

Meet Our Counselor!
Hello LVES Families!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself! My name is Amy Sexton and I am the Lago Vista Elementary School Counselor. This will be my ninth year as the counselor here, and I absolutely love being a part of the Viking family!
My passion for education began during my time as a student at The University of Texas at Austin, where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Learning and Development. After moving around the country and overseas for several years, I came back to Austin and resumed my teaching career in Leander ISD as a 5th grade teacher for eleven years. My compassion for students and wanting to help the whole child led me to pursue my Master of Education in School Counseling degree. I was then fortunate to begin my counseling career at Lago Vista Elementary! What I love most about the elementary level is the opportunity for early intervention support that can have a lifetime positive impact on a child.
As your school counselor, I would like for everyone to know my various roles, and ways I might be able to help your child. I can provide:
Individual guidance counseling
Small group guidance counseling
Classroom guidance lessons based on our LVISD Character Traits and the Social Emotional Learning Competencies of responsible decision-making, self-management, self and social awareness, and relationship skills.
I also serve our campus in these areas:
Campus 504 Plan Coordinator
PALs Coordinator
Project Mentor Coordinator
Coordinate and deliver meal bags and school supplies for students in need
Project VinĂĄtta/No Place for Hate Kindness Coalition Coordinator
Support and consult with staff and families about student concerns
I am so excited to work with your children, and I look forward to getting to know you throughout the school year!
Sincerely,
Amy Sexton

Transportation
New Transportation E-Link System
Lago Vista ISD and Goldstar Transit are excited to introduce a new tool for managing your child's transportation needs this school year: the e-Link system by Versatrans. This online platform allows you to conveniently look up your child's bus route and stop information. Please view the attached document for steps in accessing your child's bus route information in e-Link.
As we prepare for the first day of school on August 15th, please note the following important transportation details:
Transportation Requests: After requesting bus transportation in Ascender ParentPortal, please allow 2-3 business days before using the e-Link system to search for your child's bus route. This allows us time to process and assign routes accurately.
Changing Route Information: As the start of the school year approaches, please be aware that route information may change. We recommend checking your childâs route information the night before the first day of school and then each night during the first few days. This will help ensure you have the most up-to-date information.
Arrival at Bus Stops: All students should arrive at their scheduled bus stops at least 10 minutes prior to the listed pickup times. Additionally, please allow a little extra time for the buses to arrive during the first few weeks of school, as drivers adjust to the new routes and schedules.
Ongoing Route Adjustments: Please keep in mind that bus routes are continuously under review and modification, particularly at the start of the school year. Stop locations and times may vary as we work to optimize the routes.
- Bus Ridership: In order to ensure efficient and timely routes, transportation services are only provided to students who are regular riders. Any student who does not ride an assigned route for 10 consecutive days will be dropped from the route.
To get started with e-Link, please visit the link below:
https://thebusportal.com/LagovistaTX/elinkrp/login.aspx
Important: If you have requested bus transportation, you will need your studentâs ID number to create and access your e-Link account.
Student: [STUDENT_NAME]
Student ID: [STUDENT_ID]
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we strive to provide a safe and efficient transportation experience for your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please donât hesitate to reach out to our Lago Vista ISD Transportation Services office at at (512) 267-8300 x1508.
Volunteer Information
The excellence in our school system is due, in large part, to the involvement of our parents and their volunteer efforts. More information will be coming about volunteer opportunities. Please click here to complete the Lago Vista ISD Volunteer Application.
Safety Information
Your child's safety is, and always has been, our number one priority. Here are a few of the things we are doing to ensure your child's continued safety:
* Exterior doors remain locked at all times. Checks of exterior doors are conducted to ensure they are locked and closed securely. Exterior doors are fitted with alarms which alert administrators if they remain open for more than 60 seconds.
* Interior doors remain locked at all times.
*The school district employs a School Resource Officer (SRO) who patrols all campuses.
*We have a security guard on campus during the school day.
*No adults are admitted to the building during school hours without being screened through our Raptor visitor security system.
*All visitors are issued a visitor's badge with a photo ID printed on it. Badges will be collected upon exiting the building. Visitors are required to enter through the front entrance.
*A variety of safety drills are conducted routinely in order to ensure students and staff know protocols for various emergency situations.
*District use of Bark content monitoring to protect students while online.
*Security cameras are located throughout the interior and exterior of the building to monitor activity 24/7.
*Stay Alert system is used to allow anonymous reporting of any concerns by any member of the school community.
*Both radio communication and security cameras are linked to the police and fire departments for monitoring and quick response in emergency situations.
*A threat assessment team comprised of experts in multiple areas, including law enforcement, is employed if a threat is made by a student that requires evaluation.
