Principal's Message
10/01/2022
It's October! We are well into the swing of things and this school year. We have had our first progress report, and we are a little over 1/8 through the school year. We have had some great things happening on our campus! From our AFJROTC 9/11 Memorial Event to our own WHS Marching Band performing in the SJSU Football Halftime show to MECHA kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month with daily facts and spirit activities - this month has been busy and full of memories and learning. So far, it's been a great start to the year!
As we start the third month of school, let's make sure to check in on our students. Assess what is working for your students - check on their study habits, their social habits, and have conversations with them. This is a good time to ask about what they are learning and what goals they could set for the second half of the semester - and the rest of the school year. For our Seniors, this is the time college applications open, priority filing for the FAFSA opens, and these life changes are nearing. I have a senior this year - and am feeling the weight of what this new chapter of their lives will bring.
A special congratulations to two of our seniors - Dylan Bonifacio and Hanh Trosien! They have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise amongst the students that took the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT)! What a great achievement! The Wolf Pack is proud of you!
Any Junior (11th grader) interested in taking the PSAT/NMSQ Test this year, please sign up by Monday, 10/3, with the bookkeeper. The registration cost is $25. The test will be on Wednesday, 10/12 during the school day.
We have a lot of upcoming activities for our community and our students. Homecoming week is 10/10-10/14 - activities are happening all throughout the week with the finale on Friday, 10/14 with the parade, game, and announcement of our Homecoming King and Queen. Our students are in the midst of float building, practicing for the rally, practicing for the game, and there is a wonderful air of excitement building for this busy week of memories. Please see the calendar for the activities for that week.
College Bound and PIQE are two parent involvement programs that are occurring. Both these programs offer our families resources on helping your student obtain the requirements to attend college.
Along with these activities and events, we have a Reading Challenge for our community (this includes you, families!). It's been proven that the more a student reads, the more success they will have in school! Please encourage them to take part in this challenge - and challenge yourself, as well.
Lastly, we will be having Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday, October 24th. The students have no school that day. More information will be sent home - so please check your email!
Thank you, families, for your support from home. Our goal is for every student to be successful and the partnership between school and home is a vital component to this success, so thank you!
Until next month...

5 SECRETS OF SMART STUDENTS: EFFECTIVE STUDY TIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL
For those of you on Facebook, follow Officer Gomez (an SRO from a different district/school)
He has a running blog of issues faced in a high school environment. A lot of the issues faced around the nation, are parallel to ones we see in our own school. He has some great parent information!
Attendance Reminders
Please clear your student's absences by sending a note to the office or leaving a message on the attendance line. Absences must be excused within 48 hours of the absence, or students will receive Saturday School Hours.
Site Safety Reminders
When coming on to campus, please enter through the south parking lot (by the flag pole) and check in with the security officer. They will direct you to where you need to go. This includes during lunchtime. Please remind students that we do not allow food deliveries from non-parents/guardians (Door Dash, Uber, Postmates, etc). This is to ensure the safety and security of our campus.
If you are picking up your child early or clearing absences, please check in with security and go to the attendance windows. For all other needs, please come into the office.
