Dragon News
Findley Elementary School
April 2, 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Greetings Findley Families,
We are busy getting ready to welcome back some of our students Monday. Our staff, and the building are ready, and beyond excited for kids on Monday!
There is a lot of information contained in the newsletter this week, but there are two things in particular I want to be sure you don’t miss.
First, although it looks a little different, we had over 40 entries in our Virtual Science Fair this year. Be sure to check them out! I learned about so many things; including that you can get energy from a potato and that a comb run through your hair can “move” water! Our kids are such great scientists, I never fail to learn a lot from them.
Second, we had two student entries for our district Film Festival, Signal to Noise. Our students created short films about the power and good in humanity despite the challenging circumstances of the past year. Good luck, Dragons!
Lastly, as we move into yet another mode of teaching and learning, know that we are here to help make the transition smooth for everyone. Next week will bring schedule changes for everyone.
Here’s a rundown of those changes:
In Person Hybrid
(K-2 starts Monday, April 5 and 3-5 starts Thursday, April 8)
M,T,Th,F 9:00am-11:15am Synchronous Learning
12:15pm-2:30pm Asynchronous Learning
For the synchronous learning time, students are able to arrive at school between 8:45am-9:am.
Free meals are available to everyone. All students will receive a meal bag each day. If you wish to Opt Out of meal service, please fill out this form.
Logistics and important information about the day were sent home Wednesday, and are available on our website at all times. We will also be sending home a video prior to Monday.
Comprehensive Distance Learning
(K-2 starts Monday, April 5 and 3-5 starts Thursday, April 8)
M,T,Th,F 9:00-11:15 Asynchronous Learning
12:15-2:30 Synchronous Learning
Free meals for the week are available to everyone and can be picked up on Wednesdays, in front of the school building between 11am-12pm. To register for a meal box, please fill out this form.
Students in both In Person Hybrid and Comprehensive Distance Learning will meet on-line Wednesdays, from 8:30-9:00ish. End times may vary by teacher, grade and week. Students will also have a SEL lesson each Wednesday, alternating between synchronous and asynchronous, like they do now.
All students will also have a scheduled Specials’ time, outside of their synchronous learning time. These schedules will be sent out both by classroom teachers and specials’ teachers.
There will be additional opportunities outside of synchronous learning times to meet on-line with adults and other students for read alouds and technology challenges. Stay tuned for more information on these!
Please never hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy the weekend!

Findley’s Library To Go
We want to keep Findley students reading. Here’s an easy way to do it.
Use Findley’s Library To Go to request and check out books from the Findley library.
Three times a week, we’ll host Curbside Pickup so you can grab books and go!!
Remember you can use Sora and Epic for virtual libraries.
How families can request books:
*Browse the Findley Library Catalog to see all the books we have and place a hold.
**Placing a hold. For instruction on how to place holds: check out this video
***You will need your student ID and password to place a hold.
*Curbside Pickup: Stop by and check out books to take home.
*Email Mrs. Vennes or Mrs. Etter for suggestions and assistance.
How will I get my books?
When a book is available for a student, we’ll notify adults by email. Books can be picked up during Curbside Pickup. Hybrid students can also have their books left on their desks before they arrive at school.

2020/21 - 30-Day Notice for Statewide Tests
Under the Student Assessment Bill of Rights, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and Oregon’s school districts must provide families with a Notice of Statewide Tests and Opt-out Form 30 days before the start of statewide testing.
This year, school has been significantly disrupted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other factors. In response, ODE plans to ask the United States Department of Education for a temporary pause (also known as a “waiver”) in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math testing. A pause is also being requested for science testing, but science testing is not subject to this opt-out rule.
- If this waiver request is approved, then statewide ELA and Math testing will not happen this year, and there will be no need for parents to submit opt-out forms to their child’s school.
- If the waiver request is not approved, test windows will open on March 4, 2021.
ODE will update the district regularly with news about the waiver.
BSD Student Surveys
The student survey window for students in grades 4, 5, 7, and 9-12 is March 30 – June 4. Plan to notify parents of the student survey preview and opt out at least two weeks prior to making the survey available to students.
Previews of the survey in English and Spanish are posted on the District’s Research and Reports webpage. Here are the sample parent messages for school newsletters: elementary middle high.

Do you Have a chess player?
Today is the last day to registered for the Oregon State Team Chess Championship.
Do to the Covid Pandemic this years State Chess Team Championships must be played on-line.
You have played a lot of chess with an opponent directly across the board from you, but that is just not possible today. So join the numerous chess players that have been playing on-line --- it's time to join them.
The Team Event is being played on April 11th on the LiChess platform. Numerous sections are planned for teams including one for K-5th; K-8th; K-12th, and one for a mix of schools. All teams will consist of 5 players ---- but you can register by yourself or others and we will attempt to get you (and your friends) on a team that will fit into one of the sections. Everyone is eligible to play --- but all teams will need to have 5 players. Must register by April 2nd ---- again do not delay.
Scholarships are available for this event. Anyone from a school that is in the Chess for Success program and some other schools are available to play for FREE!

All participants will receive a Science Fair participation token in May.
Stay curious!
