APS1 Position @ OSPI
The Office of Native Education is excited to share that it has reopened the APS1 position, which would support the Assistant Director, Willard Bill Jr., in partnership with the 29 federally recognized tribes, schools, internal and external stakeholders!
This position will serve as a replacement to the previous position-holder, Joan Banker, who, after a five decades-long run at OSPI, retired in October.

As we continue our Leaders in Native Education series, we look forward to advancing the deep work and conversations that took place at our August in-person gathering in Dzantik’ihéeni (Juneau, Alaska) — and beyond. Register now for our February virtual gathering. The Leaders in Native Education series is an opportunity for Native education leaders in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington to: Learn about developments in Native education happening in other states Exchange practices with partners serving Native students, educators, and communities Connect and deepen relationships with other educational leaders working to better support Native students across our region Like our in-person convening, the Leaders in Native Education Virtual Convening will provide space for small-group breakouts and whole-group conversations. North Seattle Community College Community Center Planning Meeting
We are excited to invite you all to another community meeting to continue to discuss and envision what an Native Community Center could be in our region! This meeting will be in person at the North Seattle Community College in "the Grove" (a map is attached), at 6:30 PM to 8 PM.
This is the pre-development stage of the community center and we asking members of the urban Native community for their ideas for what the community center should provide in services, activities, and gathering spaces. Please come and share your thoughts with us!
We'll serve dinner and all participants above 12 years old will receive gift cards as an honorarium. PLEASE RSVP at this email: admin@headwaterpeople.com so we make sure we have enough food!

American Indian Endowed Scholarship (AIES)
Applications are available now to apply for the 2024-2025 American Indian Endowed Scholarship (AIES) awards. Please widely distribute this announcement to anyone who may be interested in this scholarship.
The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) will accept signed and completed applications that are postmarked by March 1, 2024. Applications must be accompanied with all required attachments.
To download the application and instruction materials, go to https://wsac.wa.gov/american-indian-endowed-scholarship, and click “How do I apply?” (Adobe Acrobat Reader software version 11.0 or newer required).
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Have close social and cultural ties to an American Indian tribe or community in Washington state
- Intend to use his or her education to benefit the American Indian community in this state
- Be enrolled full-time for 2024-25, beginning fall term, at a participating college or university in-state
- Have demonstrated financial need (as determined by the college financial aid office, per FAFSA)
- Be a Washington state resident
- Have not received a total of five years of this scholarship
There is a priority for upper-division and graduate-level students, however, all qualified applicants are considered. IMPORTANT: Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the selection committee.
A selection committee composed of representatives from the American Indian community in-state will review and score the applications. The number of scholarships and amounts awarded are based on the interest earnings available in the endowment. Scholarships generally range between $500 to $2,000 each for the academic year. Finalists are announced in the spring.
