February Virtue: Prudence
Each month, the whole school focuses on the same virtue as we hope to grow closer to Jesus by imitating His life and virtues. We also learn more about the saints who exemplify these good habits. This month students are learning about the virtue of prudence. Please join them by modeling how you make good decisions in specific circumstances during the month of February.
FAW Mathletes Advance to the State Competition!
Our middle schoolers participated in the 30th annual regional MATHCOUNTS competition! MATHCOUNTS is a program that "aims to boost student interest in mathematics by making the subject challenging and entertaining." During the event, sponsored by SMECO, local middle schoolers enjoyed fast-paced activities such as the Sprint Round, Target Round, and Team Round. Each challenge tested their math skills both individually and as a team. At the end, the top 12 competitors (out of more than 150 students) were called up for a head to head showdown in the Countdown Round. One of our 8th graders earned 2nd place in this single elimination competition in which students had to orally respond to questions in a matter of seconds. The FAW Team earned 5th place and will move on to the State MATHCOUNTS competition at John Hopkins next month! Congratulations!

Happy National Heart Month! Your heart is a vital organ that pumps life-sustaining, oxygen filled blood to all parts of your body. Since the beginning of time, emotions (especially affection) have been associated with the heart. Heightened emotions cause us to literally feel an adrenaline surge in our chests (e.g. the way your heart rate speeds up when you see your Valentine!). Even the Bible emphasizes the importance of the heart, and has been interpreted to suggest that things such as feelings, knowledge, and wisdom reside in the heart (rather than in the brain). In the King James version of the Bible, the heart is mentioned over 800 times, including when we are advised to “Love the Lord God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.” Unfortunately, heart disease (or cardiovascular disease) remains the number one cause of death, not just in the US, but globally. Knowing its extreme importance, we should do our best to keep our hearts healthy. Some things that help with this are nutritious food, exercise, and even love and laughter. As stated in Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
