Welcome October
October is here, bringing with it fall colors, cooler temperatures, and, of course, all things
October, the tenth month of the year. We have gone through winter, spring, and summer times of the year that in themselves bring tough days and good days. Now in the next 31 days all that is great and beautiful in the natural world will be showcased and I hope you all can take part in it. Unlike any other month of the year October gives us the full scope of what the natural world is. How it can give the soul an incredible high. The mind can be so relaxed and out of it that one does not realize it. Time spent in the outdoors in October will give us that strength needed to get us through what’s ahead. I hope you’ll take the time and spend some of it outdoors. Not to be outdone by the breath-taking foliage the wild brook trout is a sight to behold at this time of the year. Yes, my dear friends, we have now entered the “glorious season”.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.
-William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Owls
Owls represent wisdom, knowledge, change, transformation, intuitive development, and trusting the mystery. They are tied to the spiritual symbolism of “death” which brings about new beginnings with a higher understanding and evolved perspective. Owls can show up when you are being asked to listen to your intuition. It is common to feel spiritually activated when you see or hear an owl. They are messengers from the spirit realm, bringing wisdom, truth, and understanding of the mysteries of life. Owls can show up to help you solve a problem or gain a higher perspective of a situation.
Family
October is crisp days and cool nights, a time to curl up around the dancing flames and sink into a good book. “Listen! The wine is rising and the air is wild with leaves.
-John Sinor
Where has the time gone. In some ways 2021 has moved at an excruciating pace. And yet, it also seems to have moved at lightning speed, as the world changed each day. Many people I talk to when talking about the seasons say their favorite season is autumn and so many say October is their favorite month. For me October is the start of not only the beauty that will fall over us but also the upcoming holidays. Perhaps that is why I along with so many others cherish the month. With Halloween in the near setting and all those little Halloween chocolate bars that we pretend we are buying for the trick or treaters and then hope they don’t show up. Not me of course, but I have heard rumors. Having now opened my letter to you by talking about the weather and Chocolate bars, I will move on to the lede-
September was a fast paced month for us. We celebrated Labor Day by staying home and enjoying the family. It was a day off from work and school. We sit with our son on Sept 11th and talked about what took place twenty years ago in hopes that he will have a better understanding and for us a sense of peace. We celebrated Grandparents Day with a virtual call to Oma and Opa. We attended our sons first football game. He was so excited, nervous, and anxious all rolled into one. Football practice has kept him busy with after school practice and homework. We decided to head to the local theatre to see the movie Jungle Cruise. It was a nice outing for the family. The movie simply made us smile and gave us a great conversation on the ride home. We were reminded how important family is and the small things that sometimes bring us closer and make us smile.
When we look at nature fall is a time of things turning and falling away. This is when we see the temperature and leaves begin to change, which is how we know that fall is coming. Maybe our spirits are calling some things to fall away in our lives. Nature provides a great example of how this should look in our life. Often, we want to hold on and not let go of things that could potentially cause problems in our next season. Spiritual fall is a good time for you to grow trust and become closer with spirit. Take care my friends and be safe.
With Love,
Ed

Questions and Counsel
Hello Katelyn,
How can I grow my own intuition?
Hi!
The answer is equal parts simple and difficult. Meditation. Honestly, meditation is the answer for most (arguable all) questions asked. Meditation has the ability to have the most profound effect on your life and your intuition. I believe that’s why it’s incredibly challenging. Something that could change your life, your mindset, and general perspective isn’t meant to be easy.
“But how do I meditate?”
How can I grow my own intuition answers!
Do you take baths? Do you shower? Do you wash your dishes? Take the trash out? Drive a car?
Then you’re half way there. Finding your breathing is your daily tasks. Count your steps has you take the trash out. As your shower envision all your self-doubt wash down the drain. Count backwards from 100 while taking a bath. Focus only on your breathing as your wash dishes.
If much easier to find the time to meditate if you incorporate into the things you are already doing.
“But I can’t stop thinking.”
You’re not supposed to. Meditation isn’t the practice of not thinking. Meditation is the practice of letting go. Your thoughts will find you. You will think. The goal is to let them go. Instead of thinking about the items you have to purchase at the store you simply say “hello grocery list, not now” and let it go.
Learn how to reground yourself. Being present. That’s meditation. Pick a word. it can be any word, and let this word serve you as your grounding word. When you notice your mind wondering repeat your grounding word to yourself and refocus. The more you practice the less you’ll need to use your grounding word.
Happy meditating,
Katelyn

Spiritual Practices
October is here, bringing with it fall colors, cooler temperatures, and, of course, all things Halloween. What most people fail to realize, however, is that October is actually the most spiritual month of the year. Autumn is upon us with all its bright colors. However, as the leaves fall from the trees, marking a time of transition and a new chapter for the plant life among us, so too will this be a time of change and transition in our own lives. The energy that surrounds the month of October is the perfect time to rid your life of unnecessary negativity and toxic energy, shedding it as a tree would it’s leaves and making way to invite new positivity in its place.
The full transition is one that takes time. Often, we shed our negativity throughout the fall, spending the winter recollecting ourselves and determining what direction we want to take in life before welcoming the positivity and warmth of the spring. Despite how long it may take, it is important to remember that the whole process will fail if not for that first, important step.
If there is one thing the month of October is known for, it’s the coming of Halloween. A spooky time of witches and jack-o-lanterns, ghosts and goblins, and lots of candy, it’s easy to become so caught up in the commercial aspect of the holiday that one overlooks the spiritual side entirely. This focus on ghosts and spirits has an incredible real connection that may impact our lives directly. It is said that the period of time between October 8th and November 11th each year is the time in which the veil between our world and the spirit world is blurred, allowing the spirits of our deceased loved ones to move among us once again. While you may not see them, deceased loved ones, spirit guides and other residents of the spiritual realm are able to communicate with us easier than ever if only we are aware and open to their efforts. This involves keeping your mind, heart, and soul open to the possibility, and your eyes peeled for potential signs.
The celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday specifically focuses on exactly this concept. Celebrated on November 1st, it honors those that we have lost while recognizing that at this period of time they have the ability to walk among us. The day is celebrated with food, drinks, parties, and parades. The important part to note, however, is that throughout the day their deceased loved ones are believed to once again be part of the community, taking part in the celebrations as well. Shrines with candles and pictures of those who have passed welcome them into their world, showing these spirits that they have not been forgotten.
This isn’t, however, the only culture or belief system to specifically focus on the thinning of the veil. In Hinduism, believers practice Pind Daan. This spiritual practice is said to bless and bring salvation to the souls of the departed through a series of rituals. While it can be practiced at any time throughout the year, there are times that it is said to be significantly more powerful, which includes the ‘18th day of Tri paksha sraddha or Pitripaksha mela’ which falls in the months of September and/or October.
For those who may not subscribe to a specific belief or holiday during this time, the thinning of the veil is still important to take note of. While most focus on the ability to welcome one’s loved ones back for a short time, it is important to note that they are not the only spirits waiting to make contact. Negative or toxic spirits will often try to take advantage of this vulnerable time, their resolve strengthened by all things dark, creepy and evil as portrayed in our Halloween celebrations.

Let Autumn Lift Your Spirits
Autumn is a new beginning, a second spring.
Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.
-F. Scott Fitzgerald
I associate spring with new life and autumn with new beginnings in the midst of my well-worn life. Frankly, I’m worn out by the end of summer. The oppressive heat of the Piedmont area takes its toll on plant and animal alike, including humans. That first crisp fall morning when I need to put on a sweater before going outside is one of my favorite moments of the year. It feels like a new beginning. By the end of summer, the trees and bushes in my neighborhood look as if they need a facelift. Just in time, along comes autumn’s cool nights that turn the leaves into spectacular shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple. Even though I know that these bright colors signal that the leaves are about to die, the colors lift my drooping summer spirits. As William Cullen Bryant once said “Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile”.
As a child growing up in Northern Florida, I barely noticed the seasons. One seemed much the same as another. It wasn’t until I moved to Western Pennsylvania that I realized how beautiful the autumn colors could be. There was one thing, however, that I loved about autumn in northern Florida. Whether bicycling to and from school or just cruising around the neighborhood on my trusty bicycle, I loved to ride over the leaves that had fallen into the gutter so I could listen to the sound of them crunching under my wheels. I even picked streets to ride on based on the sound quality of their leaves crunching. I was always disappointed when the first rainfall made the leaves too soggy to sing and took away my fun. On a philosophical note, I love this quote from Samuel Johnson: No man can taste the fruits of autumn while he is delighting his scent with the flowers of spring. To appreciate the present, we have to let go of the past. This means delighting in spring flowers while they last, but not expecting their scent to last forever. When our minds are lost in thoughts about the past, we miss what this moment has to offer. Even if this moment isn’t as pleasant as the scent of spring flowers, appreciating whatever fruits it does have to offer brings with it a sense of peace and well-being with our lives.
We can try to fashion every aspect of our experience to be to our liking and seek to have it stay that way—a tide that’s high and a moon that’s full—but it would be a futile endeavor and a recipe for disappointment and unhappiness because the universal law of impermanence will always have its way. I hope you find something in your life that's as joyful as that last dancing red leaf? May we find peace in this season of maturity and new beginnings.
