CJMS Weekly Updates
October 16 to October 20
Ms. Snider's Phone Message (10.15.23)
Good Evening, Cabin John Middle School Families!
This is your Principal, Ms. Snider with the Sunday announcements for the week of October 16 - 20. First, I wanted to express my support for the many members of our school community who are impacted, directly and indirectly, by the violence that continues to unfold in Israel and Gaza. My heart goes out to students, staff, and families among us who are currently experiencing distress and anxiety concerning the safety and well-being of their relatives and loved ones. We want to be sure our students and staff are supported during this time and on an ongoing basis as needed. Please remember that our administrative and counseling teams are always here for you and please reach out if you need additional support today or in the future.
I also want to share a message that Cabin John Middle School deeply condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia. Hateful or inappropriate comments or behaviors of any kind will not be tolerated and we will work diligently to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for our students and staff. I urge us all to come together now to support each other and to stand up to hate and violence.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms. An online student training lesson, entitled “Culture of Respect,” has been developed for students in Grades 6–12. This online training lesson builds on last year’s student module and provides critical information that will help students better recognize the signs of inappropriate behaviors, including the various ways to report alleged/concerning incidents. The training should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and will be accessible to all students via their myMCPS Classroom homepage. All students are expected to complete the Culture of Respect module. Dedicated time will be provided for students during Advisory class on October 18th. Students will receive 2 SSL for completion of this module.
On Wednesday, October 18th during PE and Health classes students will have their 2023-2024 school year pictures taken. In the digital newsletter, you will find information on how to order the pictures that are taken on Wednesday.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Fall Book Fair by purchasing items and/or volunteering your time to support our Media Center staff. While the in-school sale is over, the online store is still open until October 19 at https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/cjms.
This week's newsletter has many opportunities happening in the upcoming weeks. Please take the time to read through them and take advantage.
We look forward to welcoming everyone on Monday into our Cabin John community focused on respect, positive relationships, and resilience.
Have a great evening!
Somer Snider
Principal, CJMS

A Note from MCPS Transportation
What Happens When My Bus Is Delayed or Canceled
There is a local and national challenge with recruiting, hiring and retaining bus drivers for school systems and the transportation industry. When a bus driver or attendant is unable to come to work due to illness or unexpected leave, it puts a strain on the system to keep that bus on the road. The MCPS Department of Transportation uses substitute drivers and multiple runs to ensure that it has as many buses as possible on the roads to deliver students to school every day. Canceling a bus route is a last resort.
If your child’s route is delayed or canceled, here is how we let you know:
- Impacted routes are published the day before or the morning of by 6:15 a.m.
- Information published on MCPS website and ConnectEd message is sent to families
- Department of Transportation continues to identify possible drivers for impacted route
- Bus route information dashboard updated every half hour until 9:30 a.m.
Updates for afternoon routes
- Bus route information dashboard updated by 1:30 p.m.

- Once identified, contact Jen Eisenfeld, Wootton HS PTSA Community Outreach Liaison, with the needed item(s). Ptsa_community_liaison@tswoottonhs.org or jjeisenfeld@verizon.net.
- Examples of items given in the past ranged from a new pair of shoes, coat, clothing, school supplies, or grocery store gift card – anything a child is in immediate need of to help ensure school success.
