News & Announcements
It's a Holiday Homecoming!
Mountain View Middle School sixth grader Ellie Schmitt received a special surprise last week when she walked down the hallway of the school to find her dad, Navy Captain Richard Schmitt, waiting to greet her with lots of hugs. Captain Schmitt just returned home from a 10-month deployment in Djibouti, Africa.
Thank you to CAPT Schmitt and his entire family for their service to our country.
Portrait of an Eagle Superstars!
Led by our Superintendent, Dr. Mark Blanchard, we began this month what we hope to become a new tradition of honoring our staff members who exemplify excellence in demonstrating the Portrait of an Eagle competencies. These staff members were surprised throughout the day by Dr. Blanchard, who presented them with a certificate and a POE Challenge Coin to celebrate both their commitment to their students and their work to foster our competencies.
This is the first in a series of celebrations to take place throughout the year. Please help us celebrate the following staff members:
- Curtis Banks and Bernadette Daries, Health and Physical Education teachers at Winding Creek Elementary School, for their work demonstrating and developing Empathy in their students.
- Todd Bedard, Cumberland Valley High School Health and PE teacher, for his excellence in Communication and his ability to foster communication in students throughout the school.
- Nicole Mayberry, grade 8 ELA teacher at Mountain View Middle School, honoring her work to foster confidence in her students.
- Ava Petrosky, grade 5 teacher at Green Ridge Elementary School, for her commitment to Communication and helping to tell the story of all the great things happening at Green Ridge.
Congratulations, and thank you for your commitment to Cumberland Valley!
Wreaths Across America
Staff members from across the district, together with their family members, traveled to Fort Indiantown Gap on Saturday, December 16, to honor our veterans. The team participated in the Wreaths Across America wreath-laying ceremony at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Special thanks to Kristen Richey, Kim Titus, Stacy Hart, Nicole Kilmoyer, Anne Oneil, Miranda Baker, Bobbi Jo Worrel, Kelsey Lahr, Melissa Johnson, John Silfee, and Carol Yanity. Organized by the Cumberland Valley Education Association, staff also raised $400 toward the ceremony.
Eagles Around the District
Our staff have been spreading lots of holiday cheer (and some mischief) around the district this week. We appreciate their efforts to make the season even more special for our students.
Top left: Silver Spring Elementary School Health & PE teacher Steve Flom and Art teacher Amy Kovach found themselves "stuck" in a snow globe recently.
Bottom left: Elfy the life-sized Elf on a Shelf started her magical adventures at Winding Creek Elementary School on Monday. Students are so excited to see where Elfy will make an appearance each morning.
Middle: The Grinch (aka CVPD Sergeant Chad Shifflet) is on the loose at Eagle View Middle School, and word is he's searching for holiday trees. Fortunately, our Principal's Secretary Karen Maher was able to stop him before he snatched this tree. (And, knowing Mrs. Maher, she helped the Grinch grow his heart in the process.).
Top right: The Grinch also caused some mischief at Green Ridge Elementary School, where he was spotted wrapping up dayside custodian Randy Moyer, or Bubba as he's known by our students. (We do agree that Mr. Moyer is definitely a gift to our Gators!).
Bottom right: Special friends were onsite to help direct morning traffic this week.
Portrait of an Eagle: Student Spotlight
Members of the Class of 2024 class council recently visited Susquehanna Service Dogs to learn more about their organization, including how they can support the program. Together, the council is now hosting a fundraiser to name a Labrador puppy, which will ultimately benefit a future recipient of a Susquehanna Service Dog. Thanks to our students for demonstrating empathy, responsibility, and communication throughout this process. They are a Portrait of an Eagle.
