271 Update - Fall 2023
Information for School District 271 Families & Community
Mission Statement: District 271 ensures students become lifelong learners, empowered by their knowledge and skills to be responsible citizens.
Our Vision: Through the work of our students and faculty, Coeur d’Alene District 271 will be recognized as a high-achieving district of choice in Idaho and the Northwest.
Trustee Election Results
Heather Tenbrink, current Coeur d’Alene School District 271 Zone 3 trustee, won her race on November 7. Trustee Tenbrink has served on our board since her appointment in 2021. In the race for Zone 2, James “Jimmy” McAndrew was elected to fill the seat held by Trustee Casey Morrisroe, who did not run for re-election. We thank all the candidates for their interest in the success of our students and in serving on the board. We are also grateful to our community members who voted.
Things We're Working On
A district with a plan.
We are driven by a single priority - to improve each student's level of achievement so they can be successful adults when they leave us. That's it. Educating our community’s children is an investment we make in their futures as well as our own. It's a heavy responsibility, providing students with the skills, tools, and experiences they need to be successful on their own in a complex world. We take that responsibility seriously, so we have a plan to make sure we fulfill it. Our 2023-28 Strategic Plan lays out a mission and vision, and specific goals and objectives in four key areas. The destination is clear.
The plan is a roadmap to guide us there. Stay tuned for more information about how we are performing against the ambitious goals we've set.
The road from good to great...
District 271 performs at a high level. For decades our students have led the state in many academic categories, performing well on standardized tests and going on to college at a higher rate than the Idaho average. Being good at what we do is great. But being great at what we do is better. Our goal is to improve student achievement in all content areas by at least 5% by 2025. And when we get there, our student performance numbers will be the best in the state among districts our size. We will provide updates on our progress as we go along.
Ensuring all students reach their full potential.
We are on a path to help our students reach a higher level of achievement. It drives everything we do. To ensure all our students get there, we are changing our approach to teaching and learning. In many schools, teachers work alone without opportunities to collaborate, share, learn, or improve. Our vision is to change that model - to provide collaborative environments for our teachers to work in teams called Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). PLCs give our educators a framework to share their experiences and expertise with one another, helping them become better teachers which improves the learning experience for our students. All of our students deserve to realize their full potential. So our teachers are going to make it happen. It’s new and it’s challenging but they are committed. Stay tuned for updates!
Our community partners are awesome.
District 271 cannot be successful without the support of our community. And we are grateful to have so many friends and partners helping us along the way as we prepare our kids for successful lives. To honor these amazing partners, we created the Friend of 271 initiative to recognize those who go above and beyond in their own unique ways to support our shared community, students, teachers, staff, and schools. The district recognized the first Friend of 271 recipient, Parker Toyota, in August followed by Northwest Specialty Hospital in September, and the Coeur d'Alene Kroc Center in October. We look forward to celebrating the long list of friends who are so fundamental to the success of our students, our district, and our community.
It's always the season to help those in need.
The McKinney-Vento Program (MVP) supports families living in unstable housing and ensures students have access to education and can fully participate in school. District 271 MVP staff help remove barriers to learning many students in this situation experience such as access to food, clothes, transportation, personal and school supplies. Project Beauty Share, which serves women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness, and poverty, recently donated personal hygiene products and makeup to our program. We are grateful. Tips for staying healthy.
It's that time again…cold and flu season. Please review the District's Illness Guidelines and remember to keep your children home if they have had a fever (above 100.4° F), vomiting, and/or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. For tips on preventing illness and what to do if someone in your family does get sick, visit the Health Services page of the district’s website.
Weather Closure Information
Protecting the health and safety of our students and staff drives our decision-making about whether to delay classes or close our schools. A delay/closure may occur due to bad weather, poor road conditions, or other safety issues. Before dawn we assess current and upcoming weather forecasts as well as neighborhood, roadway, and driving conditions before deciding to delay or close school. We strive to make a decision to delay/close by 5 a.m. and communicate the decision to our community by 6 a.m., in most cases. For more information about weather closures, please visit the district's website. You can view and/or download the weather closure flier here.
Trouble with your student's Chromebook?
Some students are reporting an Error 400 on their Chromebooks when logging in at home. This problem stems from wireless settings. If you get this error, click on the time in the lower right corner of the Chromebook screen, select the Wi-Fi, then click "forget" and rejoin your home network with your Wi-Fi password. This should fix that problem. We are also aware that some Chromebooks are loading web pages slowly at home and at school. We are looking into the source of this issue and will let students and staff know when we have it resolved.
It just got easier to get answers to your questions!
The district’s general mailbox, info@cdaschools.org, has served us well, but it’s time to get more efficient in how we respond to your questions. To make it easier to get the information you need, we replaced the general email address with a contact form. The new form collects specific information and directs questions to the team member/school/department best able to answer them. If you have a question, look for the Contact Us button in the navigation bar at the top of the district's website.
Our schools are weapon-free.
Our district is committed to providing a safe environment for all students and staff. As a result, we have a zero tolerance policy for students who bring weapons or other objects or substances to school which are a threat to the health and safety of other students, staff, or visitors, or are disruptive to the educational process. A student who is using, possessing, controlling, or transferring a firearm, as defined in Idaho Code section 18-3302D, will be expelled for a definite period of time of at least one (1) calendar year with loss of credit. In addition, at its discretion, the Board may expel a student or deny enrollment to a student who possesses a deadly or dangerous weapon, or any object that can reasonably be considered to be, or looks like, a firearm. For more information, you may review Board Policy 3330-P Student Discipline on the district’s website.
